i guess i need to watch more than five or six episodes of One Piece, because after watching it after people raved about how much better it was than Naruto, i just couldn't get into it.
Naruto was one of the few series that grabbed my attention from the first episode. Granted, i have a guilty pleasure in any good anime with ninjas, but what started as a silly anime about a boy who was a failure as a ninja, showed a much serious and sadder side towards the middle of the episode, with some foreshadowing that didn't really become apparent, until several episodes later. It's got it's filler episodes, and those with trademark shounen anime references ("Here comes my trump card attack that i had all along and could've used at any moment... but first here's a flashback of the event(s) that triggered it!"), but hell, most if not all of shounen anime does.
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex is currently my favorite series overall. It builds so much on the original movie that almost every episode leaves me eagerly anticipating the next. Like Cowboy Bebop, it's one of the few series that doesn't incorporate kids or teenagers as main characters, which instantly makes feel more serious and a bit more accessible to me. It would really make a great live action tv series.
