I formatted, installed WinXP Pro, then SP 2 off of a CD.

But when I tried installing ZoneAlarm...it started getting buggy. Not to mention, somehow I had a worm on my PC AFTER A FORMAT. Korgo, or something like that. What the shit?

I only used the M$ disks plus files I know were clean.

Plus it's ticking again.

....

This isn't funny, laptop manufacturers. This. Isn't. Funny.

This worm thing happens the very first time I try to use IE on a newly installed PC.
(always keep a disk ready with all the apps you want to install just after format. EX: diskeeper, firefox etc etc)

And I believe ZA has an issue with SP2, but there is a patch available, though I'm not sure if it's at ZA's site or MSFT's.

Damn my typos, oh well back to my crayons..............

From what I recall, the firewall that comes with SP2 is enabled by default, which may be causing some conflicts with Zone Alarm. It'd probably be a good idea to disable the integrated Windows one, assuming you haven't already done so. Other than that, SP2 may have compatibility issues with it and an update may be available or on its way to rememdy the issue from either the Zone Alarm guys or Microsoft.

Did you do the long format or quick?

Shit, I thought it killed everything both ways. Look like I'll try the long method this weekend. :-X

Drinky: What's wrong with ZA?

Actually, I don't know if it makes a difference either. I guess you did the quick one. Maybe it does make a difference......

Try the long and see if the worm still shows up, and let us know.

It shouldn't make a difference. Most worms don't infect places like the boot sector, which is one of the only places they could hide when you format your drive or redo your whole partition table during Windows Setup. I'm not sure how they would be able to survive there given that situation, even.

It kind of sounds like he's not behind a router/firewall to begin with. Certain worms can spread quickly when Windows clients are left unprotected on the network.

Bingo! Uninstall SP2 and you're gold.
What? Insanity.

Keep SP2. Learn to work around it. Don't like it? Go back to Windows 2000 SP4.

The point here is keeping your computer secure, not an open relay for whichever viruses/worms that can get into it. Windows XP original and SP1 are insecure and should not be used by anyone. If you're going to use XP, install SP2 and deal with the changes.

Personally, I like ZA more than the Windows Firewall, but then I've been using ZA for a few years so I know its quirks...

Are you on a campus network? It looks like your machine is getting infected before you can fully update on Windows Update...that worm seems to uses the LSASS vulnerability.

I've never slipstreamed SP2, maybe you can do that so that it installs with WinXP? Did you plug into the LAN at all before you installed SP2? You should install everything offline and then connect after you have SP2 installed so you can finish downloading updates, I think...I bet you can even have vanilla unpatched WinXP but you have to make sure you turn on the built-in firewall manually...
