This guy who has been posting tutorials on how to modify 360 controller lights has now completed his 360 mod. I personally dont like it, minus the additional harddrive.

He also modified the remote.

Is it just me or do some gamers feel the need to modify every piece of electronic equipment they buy. Not to sound racist, but just like Chris Rock points out, black people will put rims on anything. I think that kind of idea applies to gamers *or techies in general* now for electronics. Gotta have those cathode lights, windows, and cheesy looking paint jobs.

Misleading thread title.

Uh, how. He modified the whole of the 360. There are already private companies that will make faceplates for you, so I wanted to clarify that it was the whole thing.

That 360 matchs perfectly with my PC. Since buying my 360 I've wondered if changing the light from green to blue would be possible.

I saw this earlier in the morning. I'm totally going to slap an extra HDD in there once he gets the tuturial up.

The 360 itself looks slick. Now if only we could come up with a mod to replace the DVD drive to something less noisy..

I thought it was the dual fans in the back that made the system noisy.

i always wanted to ask,

what is modding??

i know it's some illegal shit, but what exactly does it do for ur xbox??

modifying.

the illegal part you're talking about is a chip mod (ie compromising system security). This is a case modification :P

Well there are internal mods ( things you change within the systems) and external mods (things you change to make the physical object look different.

This mod here is not illegal. It does however void his warrenty.

Actually, the guy who did the mod mentions the noise factor in the article and the fans aren't even spinning all that much. I believe it says it's slower than the original XBOX fans. I'd quote it but for some reason it's not loading for me. Bandwith~

The DVD drive in the 360 is a monster, Hell bent on destroying your ear drums very slowly over time. It makes me weep :(

yeah, i'm trying to know about the chip mod. what does it do??
It overrides the system's original bios and uses a modified one.

In other words, it lets your system do things it wasn't meant to do, such as playing copied/imported games and running programs written specifically for the modded system. In the case of the Xbox, a mod chip will allow you to change the hard drive in the system for a much bigger one.

And fyi, a modded Xbox > *.

How do you even interface the harddrive with the system?

It looks like he may have a cable running into the USB port in the back. But somebody here was claiming the other day that he system would not reach an external USB hard drive?

Can't say I have ever understood why people would want to see the innards of your console , PC or whatever and lighting it up, it honestly just looks shit. Perhaps its a child magnet for paedophiles as I can only imagine only someone with the mental capacity of a 8 year old would be impressed.

Now that I have probably offended half of GAF I shall bail out.

He couldn't take 5 minutes to poke out the holes in the case that didn't get drilled all the way through?

Why would he spend all that time making a system that looks worse than what he started with?

Grandpa whittled me a toy boat out of a larger toy boat I had, only this one had bumpy whittle marks and all the paint had been whittled off.

anyone dare me to put this on ebay and see how much it goes for? :lol (of course closing the auction before it ends)

yeah he sure voided that whoppingly huge 90 day warranty!

just to answer the question, xbox has always used green for its colors, especially with the X part, so i think its kinda funny the x is blue on the controller, you would've thought they would use green.

Lame or not, I have nothing but the utmost respect for people who can do this. I took apart my ailing PS2 armed with a tutorial in hand to try to fix it, and ended up totally destroying it :lol

In case you are curious as to how he got the extra hard drive to work...

He's just using a standard 2.5" laptop hard drive with the guts from a USB 2.0 enclosure - you'll notice it's plugged into the USB port in the back. It's recognized by the system - but only for photos and music.

I know those are the correct colors, just a observation about microsoft's decision.

Sony has got the Green Triangle and Blue X. I wonder if that has anything to do with it.

pxleyes said:
agreed. my only issue with that mod that he made was the possible hit to battery life.

Hehe, maybe he can do a Shake-Light mod for the controller. Shake your controller, and your LED's light up for 100 minutes! :)

Teh Sex.

Hmm, in his video connector tutorial he only lists left and right audio channels. What about the rest of the 5.1 channels? I guess he hasn't figured that out yet.

Even if you don't like some of the results, you have to admire the guy's industriousness.

He may not have bothered, since the cable he's hacking has an optical digital out anyway.

I bet if you cracked the hood open, you could tap the wires leading to whatever optical driver they have in there if you need coax digital out...

NEVERMIND :lol

11/30/05 The response to the 360 mod has been amazing, thanks for all the support out there! We are expecting a heavy day of traffic and have temporarily removed our video tutorial downloads due to bandwidth concerns. We have received many requests and I thought I should mention that we are not offering 360 modding service at this time. With as busy as the holiday season can be we will be working to put a small amount of custom modded boxes out on eBay, the one in the photos below will be listed at 7PM CST today. We'd love to keep this one but its better it be put to a better use than decorating the shelves here. And hey, it will be fun to do up another one.
