Fun semi-old multiplayer PC games?

My friend's dorm apartment doesn't have a TV, so when I visit him the only form of entertainment would be our laptop computers, so I thought we could try playing some multiplayer PC games over LAN... My laptop is fit enough to play any game, but his only has an integrated graphics card, so that rules out a lot of new games I guess, the rest of his specs aren't too shabby though.

I haven't played PC games in 7 years time, so I definitely need some help here... GAF probably isn't the best place to ask about PC games, but I'm hoping for the best... What PC games do you suggest that would be fun for 2 players over network? Regardless of genre or age of the game, very old games are fine long as they're fun and would work with a cross-over ethernet cable.

I'm counting on you to make my next weekend fun, thank you!

Depends on what you want to play - FPS or RPG?

Diablo 1 or 2 <-- best!
Quake 1, 2, 3
Serious Sam
Unreal Tourney 99, 2003

etc.

Give'em a spin, especially Diablo 2.

Jedi Knight 2 can be pretty fun with 2 player (or bots if needed) and the system requirements are pretty low.

Half life is good for some multiplayer fun, good mods too. If you want somthing really different, try getting star contol 3 and playing only the hyperspace melee over lan, its the only really good thing that game had.

It has a high learning curve and is quite old, but is one of the best multiplayer games ever made:

Tribes 1 full download w/ patches, maps, and scripts

http://www.tribalwar.com/forums/showthread.php?t=351243

There are still two or three jam packed servers every day, even though this has been around for 7 or 8 years??

Note this has been released for free download by Sierra and is not warez...

The trick to play the game is to hold down the forward key plus space bar while going down hills to make you go faster, then jet pack with right mouse button to fly around. There are basic weapons disc launcher, chain gun, and grenade launcher.

It's a way more elegant game than Quake or Unreal Tournament ever were. If I could make a comparison - it's more like playing "Joust" in 3D than anything else.

Should you decide on Unreal Tournament, either stick to 99 or go with 2004 if the computer can handle it. Skip 2003.

You guys could also try SWAT 3 Elite Edition if you're into tactical FPS.

Warcraft 3 + Frozen Throne is my fave PC game of all time...not that old, but it shouldn't be too demanding at lower rez with stuff turned off. Highly recommended multiplayer.

Soldat is a unique side-view multiplayer action game. It takes the best from games like Liero, Worms, Quake and Counter-Strike and gives you fast action gameplay with tons of blood and flesh. Soldiers fight against each other on 2D battle arenas using a deadly military arsenal. This is what multiplayer was invented for.

It does not get any better than Moonbase Commander.

Agreed. It's always fun to knock out some unprotected part of the other guy's base that just so happens to be one of the first buildings he put down, which leads to half his base going up in smoke.

And going with the "don't care how old it is" thing, check out Treadmarks. I guarantee you that you've never played anything quite like it, but it's awesome fun once you get the controls down.

Unreal Tournament.

Supporting this suggestion. Unreal Tournament is probably the best two-player game I've ever played--each match is a masterpiece of mindgames and dirty tricks. The game is absolutely packed with content, as well.

Seriously, try it out. Few people are aware of how different UT's 1-on-1 mode is from the normal deathmatch options.

You can play Diablo 2 over LAN without Battle.net? Maybe I should have mentioned that there's no internet connection.

Yes, I read posts before replying to them you know.

yeah and the custom maps are limitless in case you get tired of just playing classic RTS style.

Quake 3 is King 1v1 Deathmatch.

Shock 2 is probably the greatest RPG ever made (if only because its the best actionrpg yeah i said it), but play singleplayer before co-op.

Duke3D is always good co-op, and I'd imagine the Deathmatch would be fun, but it's been a while.

If SWAT3 is anything like SWAT4, the co-op should be awesome.

He's using a crossover cable. Two-player Tribes isn't the greatest thing in the world.

And while I'd put Tribes as a large-scale teamwork-based game well over Q3 and UT, there's no way I'd say that Tribes' jetpack-dueling is better than (or more elegant than) 1v1 Quake 3.

Everybody should download it anyway.

Holy shit, Netstorm is a blast from the past.

Wow, indeed. I loved playing this bastard of a game. Took me awhile to stop playing the demo and get the full game.

Besides Netstorm, you should check out Atomic Bomberman. Supports up to 5 people over a network as long as you have IPX/SPX installed.

Glad to see so many of you remember Netstorm. Are the servers active? We should try playing it.

Because it's still an active game.

A few of my friends and I went on some hosted servers a few days ago.

They have the full game for download as well as the new server to connect to and a backup server.

Worms 2 or Worms World Party... Seriously some of the most fun I can remember having back in the day with PC multiplayer games. Works great with 2 players.

Age of Empires I / II
Need for Speed HP2
Warcraft III
Quake 3 ( Instagib )
Command&Conquer Generals:ZH
Worms
Half-Life ( SvenCoop )
Sacred

Wow, Netstorm is what I was thinking of too. Back when I played too much of that I'd see a wall with stuff on it and be thinking about how to connect it with bridges..
