Fun while it lasted - GAF blocked at work

We use WebSense* here. I just queried 'gaf, and it listed it as a "message board/forum." Naturally, I'm around all the blocks... for "testing."

me too! Blocked yesterday, working now. I guess our companies use some kind of similar parent filter. This has actually happened to me before, too. So don't lose faith if you get blocked :-D

That's pretty funny, I went through the same thing back in December at my place of employment (obviously didn't see the thread back then). That was one scary week when it was blocked... it's a nice distraction during my couple moments of down-time throughout the day. And then it was magically back!

So has anyone found a way to log in and post using the http://67.227.255.239/forum/ URL?

It's the only way that I can access GAF at work other than remoting into my home PC, and if I could somehow log into the site using that URL I'd be golden!

Maybe there's some way to manually set a cookie to have me logged into the site? What is stopping the login from working when using the IP address?

This thread is a little old, there was another thread just like it.

But this must be said: set up a VPN server in your home on port 80 or 443. Your connection will be completely private, almost certainly won't be blocked. Just don't tell anyone.

Um how about you do some work?

Strangely enough, Gaf is blocked on my mobile phone when I'm connected to my company's wifi, but it's not blocked on my wired desktop.

As a sysadmin at my place of work I enjoy completely unfiltered web access.

Strangely enough, Gaf is blocked on my mobile phone when I'm connected to my company's wifi, but it's not blocked on my wired desktop.

Not that strange. We restrict mobile traffic significantly more than wired.

They finally blocked GAF at my office this month. Had a good half a year with it, but I suppose all good things must come to an end.

My work has very computer illiterate people running that sort of thing. I feel bad for people that have more tech savvy people running the filters.

It didn't work for me yesterday, but it appears to be loading fine today.

I try not to use it much at work anyway though, I just use my phone most of the time instead.

My employer has no blocks up but I still only use my phone for things like GAF.

Whether you are blocked or not it's almost always against policy; those policies exist to give easy due cause for firing you if they feel the need. It will have nothing to do with the actual browsing but companies will decide during layoff cycles to see who would be easy to fire with cause; an extensive history of "spending time on" non work web sites one of the easiest things to fire people for.

So instead of getting laid off, possibly a severance package, probably unemployment you end up fired with a bad reference and no unemployment.

Surf smart GAF.

I work for one of the biggest companies on the planet and they don't give a toss what websites you go on unless it's pornographic, violent or other such websites that common sense prevent you from visiting.

Can't imagine working for such an anal company that limits your browsing.

www.megaproxy.com is a free browser based proxy, you get a daily limit, but Neogaf sans images should not trouble that. You can't login, browse only.

You can install tunnelbear.com which gives you an IP tunnel with 300mb free a month, you can login and post using this, but need to be able to install the software on your work PC.

Use Windows Remote Desktop to log in to another PC and browse neogaf from there. There is a hack to enable Remote Desktop on all flavours of Windows 7. http://www.raymond.cc/blog/enable-remote-desktop-connection-in-windows-7-home-premium/. No need to install anything on your work PC, but IT may have disabled the Remote Desktop program. There are alternatives like Splashtop and TeamViewer, but I'm not familiar with them. Google Chrome also has Remote Desktop features in a beta release.

If you are really desperate then you can use the Google search cache to browse, a bit of a pain, because each thread requires a new search before you can access. Sometimes just changing the thread page number in the search cache URL works. For example http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=735041

Another avenue I haven't explored yet is hosting proxy software on a Wordpress blog, see guide here: http://lamp.sangkrit.net/2012/07/14/make-your-own-proxy-site-using-wordpress/

Finally I believe NeoGaf could help us all if they enabled HTTPS on the site. That is often a good way through a firewall as all the traffic is encrypted.

Is there any way my work knows I'm using megaproxy to bypass them knowing my browsing?

GAF was just blocked at work today after 6 years of worry free browsing. Pretty lame because Facebook and all other social networks are accessible even though I see far more people wasting time on those.

I don't go on GAF too often at work, only when there's a bit of downtime and I'm waiting for something or someone to get back to me, but I'm using my work phone and work data plan(instead of my personal data plan) to browse GAF now out of spite.

Yea join the crowd, enterprise mon. put an end to it for me a little over a year ago. Thankfully our public wifi doesn't block it.

My company started blocking it about 6 months ago, but only did for about 3 months. They did the same with Reddit too. Neither site is blocked anymore.

I can only access GAF at work when I use neogaf.com/forum/index.php and even then, individual threads often get blocked. I'm pretty sure it comes down to links (including posted images) to other blocked sites, so for example, all game review threads are blocked.

I did notice, starting this week, that more and more threads are blocked... leading me to wonder if the algorithm or whatever is getting more strict.

Oddly enough, while almost all gaming sites are blocked, I can access Polygon without any issue (not to mention sites like reddit, although a few years ago certain gaming subreddits would be blocked).
