Hm, lots of irrational discomfort and hate around here. I will help to balance it out:
At the festivals and burns I go to, there is often a theme camp of furries. Of all the camps I've seen at all these events, I'd easily put this group in the top five in terms of volunteering to help the events, providing helpful services for others, being pleasant to hang with, and generally upbeat. They're also a quite a bit more physically fit than most nerd groups* that I interact with (eg: SF congoers, non-teenaged anime fans, video gamers, rennies, alt-lifestyle folk), and they don't particularly look down on anyone.
Also, it's pretty neat when they suit up and get on one of the giant trampolines.
* I do not mean to look down on nerds and geeks and such. They're generally awesome when not hating on others via the Internet, and I respect their personal choices. I'm just using this as a relative positive trait that many furries I've met happen to sport, one in particular that seems to be otherwise shared only by LARPers.
edit: In case anybody was wondering, the other four would probably be "Breakfast Club Detention Camp", "Camp Justice League", "Camp Fogie" and maaaaaaybe "Whiskey & Whores"
