G-Sync is the god-level gaming upgrade.

Guys I've finally got a 980 Ti to go with my Acer XB270hu

Now to guarantee that Gsync is always active except for the games where I force to ULMB (in the control panel) how do I do this?

I game in Borderless Fullscreen so I need to Enable G-SYNC for windowed and full screen mode and what else?

My Refresh Rate is set to 120 hz so I can use ULMB in select games. What else do I need?

You can't use Gsync with ULMB yet.
ULMB also lowers your brightness significantly. But you probably know this already.
Also ULMB can only be used at 100 or 120Hz if I remember right.

So if you want ULMB I think you need to disable Gsync in the nVidia CP.

Depends what you want.

I went with the original ROG Swift because the Acers have notoriously bad bleed problems and I'm only looking head-on with the screen at all times anyway.

But if you want an IPS I think the new ROG Swift is currently the best 16:9 screen.
It beats the Acer in build quality. I've also not read many problems with the backlight around the panel, but that's going to vary from each individual screen anyway.

You might want to make sure you're getting a 3 year warranty too.

This is last minute, but does anyone have any thoughts on the Dell S2716DG 27" gaming monitor? Right now, the price is at $550 due to Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

I am looking to buy my first gaming monitor for my computer that has a base GTX 980, i7-5820K, and 16 GB DDR4 RAM.

With such a configuration:
1. Should I be sticking to 1080p or 1440p if I want to play current gen games like Witcher 3?
2. Should I be looking into a G-Sync monitor? Would such games like The Witcher 3 or Team Fortress 2 benefit from it?
3. Are there any recommendations of 1080p / 1440p G-Sync monitors?

I'm leaning heavily towards this monitor. I was initially going for IPS, but this TN gets really good reviews for color reproduction. $550 is still alot for a TN that doesn't have alot of field time though. Otherwise it hits all the sweet spots for a 1440p Gsync.

MS was charging tax. So I went with Newegg (no tax for me) and their 10% cyber monday coupon (MBLNOV3015 mobile only) +$25 amex refund put it at $544 total.

After months of agonizing about an IPS, I'm so happy I made this choice.

Yea unforunately I'm in NJ, so I got charged tax wherever I purchased from :(

Newegg came out to like $15-$20 more.. or else i woulda gone with them :(

1. 1440p is doable if you don't need to play games maxed out. 1080p if you do.
2. Yes, if you have the money.
3. For 1080p, there AOC G2460PG seems good. For a TN 1440p, ASUS PG278Q. For an IPS, ASUS PG279Q.
If you have a lot of money, get the Acer X34.

You might want to wait until next year when the new graphics cards come out on the Pascal architecture.

Depends on how much your framerate fluctuates and how much you dislike Vsync stuttering.

I have my Gsync monitor for a couple of weeks now and my experience is that aside from eliminating tearing the monitor smoothes framerates fluctuating between 50-144. Have no illusions, if the framerate drops bellows 50 and certainly if it drops below 40, you WILL notice it.

The really great thing is that unlike with Vsync enabled you do not notice smaller frame dips at all. Maybe I'm crazy, but back with my old monitor I would notice even the smallest dips immediately.
 
G-sync eliminates tearing and stutter.

If the framerate is relatively low, then game will appear fluid but at a low framerate, no magic.

Still, eye is much more sensible to stutter and frame drops than low framerate. For this, G-sync is good.

Another point, framerate can be sometimes higher than with v-sync on, because there is no waiting time and frames are computed as fast as possible.

So, you get the advantage of v-sync off and v-sync on together.
 
From my brief use of a G-Sync monitor, yeah, sub 50 frames is sub 50 no matter how you spin it and you will notice it. That being said it's sub 50 that will still render full, consistent frames of data with zero tearing and minimal input lag. You still get a G-Sync benefit.

I say brief use as I grabbed the AOC G2460PG and personally though the panel quality was rubbish. I also got this weird colour dithering on darks (like blacks and blues) that may have been a monitor issue but when I sent it in for repair they didn't seem to think so. G-Sync was great, but the panel quality was too poor for my standard. Though people here seem to have no issue with it, so maybe I just got a dud.

I would add that the "game changer" facet of G-Sync is going to be highly subjective. For people really sensitive to tearing, frame pacing/stuttering, and input lag, it's a huge deal. As yeah, I mean, it is the solution for having an unlock framerate yet every frame drawn with perfection. Fluctuating between 30 - 144 frames without tearing is really wonderful. But if you're not someone who notices these things much the impact probably wont be so pronounced, and you might feel a little bit burned by high entry price of G-Sync tech. I ended up paying less than I did for the AOC G-Sync (after getting a refund) for a 1440p monitor @60Hz and despite loving the tech was happier with the direction I took. G-Sync is glorious, but it's pretty fucking expensive.

I'm actually worried about these two standards competing, where one is entirely proprietary. Normally monitors last a very long time (10+ years) so I'm going to end up with a useless super expensive monitor down the line if Freesync becomes the standard for every manufacturer.

The future of G-sync is entirely in the hands of one company.

An open standard would be better and will probably be more open as times goes on (it will be probably cheaper then open, in that order).

Still, G-sync is currently in the hands of the company with more than 75% of the discrete GPU market.
 
I got a question and figured this would be my best place for an answer. I recently noticed faint vertical lines when scrolling up and down. I ordered a replacement already, so it should be here within a few days. was wondering if this is normal for a tn panel gsync monitor? It's the new dell one and only paid $550 for it. I think it's amazing(hence why I chose replacement over a refund). Do a lot of tn panels have this effect or did I just get unlucky? Most people would never notice it, but once I saw it I can't unsee it. I wont go back to 1080p/60hz ever again, so if I have to see vertical lines when scrolling so be it.

Useless? It's not like the feature will magically stop working. Harder to sell? Probably. But who knows if 1440p144 is still something to gaze about anyway when you decide your Gsync monitor needs an upgrade.

If anything, I think Nvidia will lower costs for manufacturers if they feel that they lose to FreeSync or simply add support for the standard in their drivers (should be easy enough, no?).

Displays do last a long time, but 10+ years is way too high. I wouldn't expect a display to keep working at all that long. Note that industry standard warranties are 2-3 years. Eizo's 5 years is a rare exception and their displays are clearly more expensive. Even if your display was still working at 10 years, given all the advances in display tech that will have occurred, what are the chances that you actually want to use it anymore?

It's incredibly unlikely that Nvidia would drop G-Sync support from their GPUs within the usable lifetime of a display you buy today, whether they start additionally supporting Adaptive Sync or not. And if Nvidia for some reason gave up G-Sync and cut off support eg. 7 years from now, the display would still be perfectly fine for non-gaming purposes, it wouldn't turn into a paperweight.

I believe the 9q has an IPS panel where the 8q is TN. So that might also be a factor in your decision.

I just recently received the Dell S2716DG monitor a few days ago and it is fantastic just from a build quality standpoint. It's my first 1440p monitor though so I can't compare it to the likes of the ASUS or Acer panels of similar specs. But if you were looking at purchasing it I highly recommend it!

I pulled the trigger on the S2716DG as well. It's not available here so I had it delivered to my friend in Canada and he will bring it over towards the end of the month. Can't wait to try it out with my new rig! What games have you tried on it so far and at what settings etc?

So far I've only played Fallout 4 and some Bioshock Infinite DLC at 1440p with max settings.

I know Fallout 4 has had issues with high refresh rate monitors and with gsync, but has been running well for me so far. I haven't messed with any of the ini files so my game is probably locked at 60fps. Everything looks so much sharper and clearer at 1440p!

I did have to manually set the refresh rate to 144hz when first using the monitor. It came defaulted at 60hz for some reason.
 
New AOC G2460PG user here, any tips? It's the first time that I've the possibility to play on a good monitor, I'm really curious to see how much the gaming experience can improve with gsync/144Hz.

Nvidia has already put additional hardware in monitors to improve the experience and people is buying it. Nothing stop them now to add features or improve gsync even more and I'm pretty sure Gsync module 2.0, 3.0 etc. are gonna happend, AMD will be forced to follow but again is gonna be to late and far behind of what Nvidia gonna offer.

Also is more likely that AMD goes out of bussiness before Nvidia so Gsync probably gonna be around for a long time.

That's awesome to hear. Even more excited to try it out now. Is setting the monitor to 144hz an easy procedure? I hope I don't have to fiddle with it every time I try a new game. What graphics card are you using to be able to play it at 1440p at max settings? My new rig has a 980 TI, hope I can manage that too at high frame rates. Did you notice any frame rate drops or did Gsync handle that?

It's easy. All you have to do is open the Nvidia control panel and go to the section where you can set your resolution. Just verify your resolution is set to native 1440p and 144hz refresh rate and you will be good to go. You only have to set it once.

Your gpu is very similar to mine. I'm running a Titan x. In most modern games maxed out at 1440p you might not be hitting 144fps but they will be up there in the 80fps to 100fps most of the time. From my experience gsync is making things butter smooth.

I run Windows at 120hz because 144hz somehow increases my card's idle power draw by a TON. Probably an Nvidia driver bug.

Wait what? I still get screen tearing and stutter on a TV connected to my PC. Fallout 4 is a nightmare for example (no matter what tweaks I try it still stutters if it drops below 60fps). If I unlock and run windowed full screen it will stutter if the frame goes over 60fps.

Truly ridiculous.

Yeah it does this. I don't think it's a bug. I've researched this a bit and found out that 144hz requires more gpu power to prevent flickering. I'm no expert though.
 
My G-Sync IPS is here, going to get it set up today.

Question:

Should I still use a frame rate limiter to get the smoothest possible performance. The frame pacing issues with PC games have been driving me fucking crazy, and I'm not sure if G-Sync, on its own, is going to solve that.

don't think it's a bug, it's been like that since the 1st 144hz monitors launched years ago, could be worse google 'amd 144hz'

Frame limiters in G-Sync mode are only needed if the particular game has a problem with frame rates above a certain value, or you want to limit stress on your system for some reason.
All a limiter will do in tandem with G-Sync is limit your display refresh rate and could cause more problems than it solves.

It's a bug. Nvidia have conceeded it's a problem that will be fixed. Personally I don't buy that they've just noticed this problem now because of 165Hz displays. Nvidia GPUs have had this problem since 144Hz displays have been around which is years and I've seen it reported online many times.
 
Hmm over here in the UK the Asus PG279Q is £250 more than the Asus PG278Q, not sure i could justify the extra just for an IPS panel!?
