At least on the Asus 165 Hz IPS model tftcentral actually measured slightly worse (very slightly) pixel response behaviour at 165 HZ than at 144 Hz.
I'd probably still run it at 165.

I thought the same, but the only thing that updates at 144hz is the mouse pointer. The engine only updates at 60fps.

I was going to get one (ended up with a XB270HU instead), but I think the XB240H is a very intriguing prospect as it hits all the right features (1080p, 144hz, G-Sync, Mid tier), the only drawback I see is that its a TN panel but is it worth the $400 jump up to the XB270HU, there doesn't seem to be any other option between these two monitors.

My Asus MG279Q has been fantastic. Took a little calibration work to get everything right but I'm really enjoying it. Now I just need an AMD card.

It definitely has some dithering issues but they're not too too bad. The 144hz and gsync definitely seem worth it. The monitor stands ability to raise and lower and rotate is actually really cool as well. I'm not some monitor expert so I can't go too in depth with impressions but so far I'm a fan.
It's almost like Acer and Asus are competing who can give birth to the worst gamey design haha.

In Windows 7/"Color management", how do you activate an ICC profile? It is possible to add profiles to the list "profiles associated with this device" and to select a default profile, but switching the default profile does not seem to do anything with the windows 7 desktop. How do I activate a new ICC profile?
I am asking because I am switching betweeen two displays with different ICC profiles (disabling one when I am using the other).

I was about to defend Asus until I clicked that link. My PG279Q looks fine with the red lights disabled, but this new curved model looks dreadful.
After only playing Witcher 3 and Dying Light on my g-sync monitor, I wasn't 100% sure I could notice any differences with it turned on/off.
Then I played The Division beta last weekend and even though I was getting 80-90 fps, it felt stuttery as shit and sub 30fps. Didn't realise when I updated my drivers it disabled gsync in windowed mode, so when I turned it on it was like night and day. Silky smooth.

Me too, I'm not either. As long as you're happy with the picture quality sounds good to me.
I've used some horrible TN laptop screens but in general I'm not too picky.
I really think the XB240H is the right buy if you don't want to spend too much on a monitor but still want Gsync.

i have the 27´´ and this great for me for all the reasons you said. you can also find good ICC profiles on web forums for it.
Never really had much interest in a Gsync upgrade, but this has me wondering.
Could you elaborate more? As on my standard monitor I got the opposite.
Both Witcher 3 and Dying Light when I crank the settings up to where I am getting between 30-60 fps fluctuating, screen tearing and stutters prevail unless Vsync is on, and of course that horrible control lag that comes with it.
However, the Division beta I ran ultra 1080p on my GTX970 getting 40-70 fps, vsync off, it never tore, stuttered, nothing.
Could you tell me what video card you were using? Was it a 970? Have there been any other games that perform well at low FPS without v-g sync for you? Thanks!

Yea, I run a Gsync monitor in Windows 10 and it works perfectly.
Any recommendations on a monitor arm to attach from my desk to a ROG Swift? The base on this is HUGE and it's so far from the wall/close to me that it's ridiculous. I figure a monitor arm is the best way of getting then screen as close to the wall and back of my desk as possible.
I don't see why Nvidia would ever want to give up the money they get from licensing it. It's not like AMD has enough of a market share to push monitor makers into supporting both FreeSync and G-Sync.

Both use the variable framerate capability introduced by eDP 1.0 that already existed for ages for other purposes. Nvidia made that accessible through proprietary hardware that they sell to monitor makers. AMD pushed on making that accessible through public standards like the already existing optional extension to DP 1.2a and an upcoming extension to HDMI.
But would you ever noticed backlight bleed for day to day use??, i mean how often are you going to be displaying a completely black screen?

I'm pretty sure all g-sync needs hardware. Guess it doesn't technically need to be on the screen of a laptop but it could be on the motherboard or a daughterboard.
In games? All the time.
Monitor on the left is a VA, IPS with glow on the right.
You won't really see it on non black screens, but there are tons of dark moments, dark corners of the screen in games and flashlighting/glow/blb kills it, especially when you're paying 700+ dollars for it.
Just got my PG279Q in yesterday, G-Sync is really something else. Definitely one of those "I can't go back." upgrades.Just picked up a refurbished XB240H. Gsync, 144hz, 1ms, 24" 1080p. Got it for $300 including tax. Hopefully it'll be a nice compliment to the 34" 3840x1440 ultrawide LG monitor I got recently. Can't wait to experience gsync

First thing I did was turned the red glowing LED shit off, and after that it pretty much looks like any other monitor. I hate gaudy, gamer-y stuff as well but this monitor's aesthetics are fine for me.

This is pretty much the comment I was about to make. My BLB isn't bad at all, beyond the typical IPS glow. I do have two specs of dust near the top, and a couple glowy pixels near the bottom, but neither of these issues are noticeable 99% of the time I'm using it. September build, btw.
There isn't really any news about 16:9 va gsync monitors, so it would be a pretty safe buy, someone might want to correct me on that though. The panel on the dell is the same as the asus PG278Q, which has been out for a while. It's a really good tn, the best I've seen when calibrated, with minor pixel inversion being the only flaw.
There's a 21:9 va (z35) gsync out right now and some 144hz VA 21:9 samsung panels coming out soon which probably won't have gsync.
Well, a user above mentioned he got one for 300$. I don't know about any budget models coming up, but I'm fairly certain there will be a bunch of new top of the line displays later this year along with Pascal which will most likely feature DP1.3 -- I'd be shocked if that wasn't the case. So I assume the current models will see a price drop by then or you can snag one from someone who is upgrading.
My personal bets (I forgot which panels have been mentioned in that one article lately so just wild guesses based on what DP1.3 should be capable of):

I got black OSD on my XB270HU. Does that mean it's one of the new ones? Because I think they used to have blue OSD or is it the other way around?
