G4TechTV Phil Harrison interview: Killzone

I love how none of the reps actually say it is real time. Instead they say it is "representative" of what you will be playing. Damn fibbers.
On G4's special last night they interviewed some guy, pretty sure they said he was VP of SCEA, and asked him explicitly about Killzone and if it was realtime. He said that it was running on real development kits, so either its a mass hoax by Sony, or Killzone is a real time generated, heavily scripted, demo of what the PS3 should be capable of, even early on.

Doesn't much surprise me really. Epic has only had two months to work on the PS3 version of UE3 and it looks like hot shit, Guerrilla has had even longer to work on Killzone and I don't think its that much above UE3, outside of the game itself using certain artistic choices that make it look a bit better.

Exactly. That's what really seperates Killzone from stuff like GoW or UE3. Killzone simply has amazing art direction which helps out alot. The original had great art direction too.

I could see the image quality looking similar in killzone 2, glances at the FFVII tech demo and the Ruby tech demo on 360 show that kind of quality is possible next gen. I doubt it'll actually look as good running though.

I also doubt this'll be anything like a launch title (even for Europe).

What the hell are you angry over? You want the actual games to do less then what was shown? You want a solid guarantee that's what they'll be using?

The XBots want to see less.

Like Atari 2600 less.

See, I wouldn't call Killzone's art direction amazing, just very convenient for making a visual "OMG WTF BBQ?!?" type of game. The use of motion blur, a pretty simple color palet, and some other design choices (they running a general grain filter over it a la Silent Hill? Looks kinda like it) help mask the rougher edges. The first Killzone had similar graphical choices, and its all fine and good since it looks hot in gameplay, but the actual graphical divide between Killzone and UE3 isn't very big, by the time Epic is done with the engine's customization on PS3 I wouldn't be surprised if it topped the Killzone vid pretty handily.

My summation of MS and Sony:

Don't write checks your machines can't cash.

Lets see where the XBox 360 is in 6 months and where the PS3 is in 10-12 months.

We will then know if the checks bounced or not.

For the record, the interview was Morgan Webb with Phil Harrison on G4 last night. There were two Sony reps interviewed, and Phil was the second one.

Again, Morgan asked him repeatedly if that was realtime (G4 is doing a great job asking the questions forumites are asking btw), and each time, he was more defiant. He said "this is just scratching the surface." He also mentioned that the finished games should exceed what we've seen so far. Pretty bold, but when you think about it, coders haven't even gotten final hardware yet. They don't know what tricks they can or cannot pull with the hw yet. So I don't think Sony's gonna tell them to code to the full specs of the machine, b/c that would just be totally unrealistic. Like the PS2, we should see this quality by at least the late first-gen, if not sooner. All IMO, of course.

Morgan seemed flabberghasted, like some of you are now, so she asked him, "So when I get Killzone at home, will it look like THIS?" Almost the exact wording there. And Phil said, "Absolutely." No hesitation at all. Now, he's one of the top 3 guys at Sony IMO. He may only be a VP at SCEE, but the guy has been the front man for the western branches of the company for years. He has to be aware of the rabid reactions that KZ demo has created, and yet he has just put his ass on the fucking record stating it's gonna be the real deal. Hey, if nothing else, it's fodder for the haters to use for the rest of the gen. So I think it's only fair to give Guerilla a chance to prove the doubters wrong.

BTW, video feeds do not do KZ2 or Heavenly Sword any justice whatsoever. My shittly little Samsung couldn't do them enough justice and they still looked CG-quality. Not movie-quality, but definitely on par with game CG from a decade ago. Just un-fucking-real. And Heavenly Sword has been verified to be running off the game engine, and supposedly handles 1080p in realtime for the indoor stages. This from one of the Ninja Theory coders. He even mentioned that there were shadow glitches if you look closely, and explained how there's even independant AI up and running for each of the enemies on screen (says watch for how they try to jump out of the way of the projectiles that she fires from that cannon). And honestly, Heavenly Sword looks closer to KZ2 than it does to GoW or UE3 (IMO). And those two are definitely realtime. And to top it, Heavenly Sword should be early first-gen (from the mouth of babes, Phil Harrison). So IMO is Heavenly Sword is so incredibly drool-worthy right now, and is verified in-game, then wtf is anyone doubting KZ2 for? I'm assuming Guerilla is getting a lot of funding for their project since Sony will want a Halo3 challenger available for next year. So while I'll wait to find out what the final product looks like, I'm no longer doubtful anymore. Seems like it's all on the level right now, and we're all gonna be blown away by this next-gen (on all systems). PEACE.

What more upfront answer do you want then "it'll be representative"?

I'd like them to admit the truth about the footage, and just say that it's their overall target in the end but it's not like that real time at the moment. You would have to be brain dead to suggest that's what they are doing now in interviews.

I'd hope Epic could get UE3 running smooth as silk on two GeForce Ultras running in SLI mode. And nobody is questioning that footage. Looks great and all sure, but there's a lot of familiar parts in that sony kit for someone like EPIC.

That is the big thing. If you listen to one of the coders for Heavenly Sword on B3D they have already got the inside environments looking that good, and the outside is sluggish. Yet they haven't even begun to tap what is possible there. Between that, the interactive demos, and everything else, then I honestly believe that those really are game engine, yet heavily scripted and frame rates fixed. If that is real time to you, then they are real time. If not, then it is CG.

But funny enough it is the original games which have sealed my purchase for the PS3. Heavenly Sword, Warhawk, I-8, Killzone 2 (won't be at launch, just like Gears of War for 360), MotorStorm, etc...

Killzone 2 and Gears of War show the potential of both machines, but neither will be available before next fall. What I am wanting to see is TGS, and what the smaller Japanese companies are doing with both systems. My interest in both machines is much higher if the Japanese support them. I'm interested to see what Square can come up with on the PS3, and I want to see Blue Dragon for the 360. When is TGS?

I saw the G4 show yesterday and there was no pussyfooting around about it. The vice-president and the guy from SCEE said they were real time. So their either flat out lying or not.
