So I got a computer off some guy who upgraded to XP from 98, no format, just the regular ol' update so the filesystem is still FAT32, etc.

The CD-ROM is having problems, even with CD's inserted, clicking on the CD-ROM icon from My Computer brings up a 'Insert CD' prompt, yet accessing an Audio CD from Windows Media Player works fine. I've tried with multiple CD's in the drive and get the same error every time from My Computer, basically making exploring the CD impossible.

I'm thinking this has somehting to do with ASPI or some other Win98 bullshit that's carried over and is fucking shit up, how do I fix this? Please note Reformat + Reinstall is not an option at this stage.

OK, turns out the CD won't open in Media player or anything, basically it will only prompt for me to insert a CD.

Any advice would be appreciated.

You've installed XP in one of the worst ways possible. FAT32.... *shakes head*

Dude, just bite bullet and install properly. Don't be lazy. Think of this as a good opportunity to organize your HD idealy (and for god's sake, partition that HD into at least 2 sectors so you can seperate data and OS so next reinstall after a year or more is less of a hassel).

Yeah, I'm well aware of this upgrade-from-98-bullshit, thing is it's not my PC, my brother pawned it off to me to fix for some guy he knows. I knew that a full re-install of XP would fix things, just that this guy's got data across 3 partitions that he wants to keep and its a pain in the ass for me to backup considering the PC doesn't even have a network card.

Do you have an access to another HD? Find a cheap one online even. It's better than trying to fix that BS situation.

Solution: new hard disk & network card.
Give up until you've got a reasonable system to work with.

A possible alternative: Do a Windows repair install. Boot windows CD, say "install", then say "repair". You'll need the key code, I think.

Shit, now it won't even boot from a CD, I can't get any CD to even spin.

This is annoying, I hate working with PC's that I haven't built.
