GAF help me choose my new car.

The time has come to get rid of my 98 civic si and I need some ideas for a replacement. I want something sporty, but it has to be able to drive in Northern Canadian winters. Think the 06 eclispe would allow me to drive over 30 km/h without me ending up in the snow drift on the other side of the street?

Subaru WRX-good bad-weather handlin, funtime acceleration.

The Saabarus might be a really sweet deal (with a more refined interior to boot, probably) with the current employee discount.

You want to drive in snow? Then you need AWD! WRX/92-X Aero is the way to go. '06 elcipse is shit.

What's with the hate on Mit. Eclipse '06?

There's lots of hate for Mitsu in general here, it's best to simply ignore it.

Looking at the RSX now. Looks like it probably would handle the snow better then the eclispe would. What about a Mazda or Celica, anyone have opinions of those?

A Mazda 3 is a great car. Good value for the money, sporty drive as well as looks, reliable and relatively economical gas mileage. I'd go for one, personally.

The blue wrx wagon is owned by a girl at subiespecialties. GET A WRX if you have the money go for the STI and join NASIOC.com

My previous car was a mazda3. It was alright. Asthetically it was beautiful. Performance wise, its pretty slow and fwd cars suck in the snow althought mazda is known for their handling.

Anyone beside me ask what his price range is?
FANBOYS??? AT GAF?!?!? WELL I NEVER

i have no idea how much 30 grand canadian is, but most any car will drive fine in snow with some good snow tires and an ounce of common sense. there are exceptions to this rule; eg, high powered rwd cars without much or useful traction control (MUSCLE CAR ALERT). yes, that means you, idiots who are recommending the fat grilled dcx abomination.

anyways, if i were you, i would buy me some hot hot awd anyways, so that i could drive like an idiot in the snow with my awd field of invincibility then wreck because i was driving like an idiot in the snow.

subarus are a given here, an impreza in 2.5, wrx, sti or saab trim would probably do you quite well. for more room, the legacy (GT) and forester X(T) are quite nice (trim levels in parenthesizes are considered more sporting, and are turbo vroom vroom).

hmm.. volvo uses the haldex awd in its s40 on up. iirc it's a front biased 4wd system like the only VW uses for the r32. the s40 t5 awd is probably fun, but i think it's over your price range...

there's audi. the A3 with the 2.0t is nice, but i don't know if canada has the quattro yet (the us is getting them later this year). also a tad pricey.

this probably isn't in your price range either, but evos are mighty fine automobiles. unfortunately the base lancer is fwd.

coming from a pretty high strung fwd car though you could look at more of those, too.

There was some douche bag driving behind me in a Bentley Continental the other day. He was weaving in and out of traffic like he was driving at Daytona.

I had half a mind to cut him off, but I was late for work as it was. He almost rear-ended me on his own.

get what i have. a 05 Nissan 350Z. The best performance/sport car for the right price :D
No that would still be the STI :) He wants a car that can drive in the snow. Not drift to the retaining wall.

STI>>>350Z

If your price range were a little higher I'd suggest the G35 coupe. Great car for the money. What do you want to use this car for? Just A to B to C? Do you care if it's domestic or not?

RSX Type S - really nice car, pretty quick, easy to drive, does well in the snow.

Nissan Altima - don't know much about it as I've never driven one, but a friend of mine has one and *loves* it.

Stay away from the Mitsu Eclipse. I haven't heard terribly bad things about it, but I haven't heard good things either. Won't stop me from test driving it though :). Check out the reviews online - Edmund's is a good site (www.edmunds.com ). Actually, I shouldn't be telling you to stay away from it - you should test drive all of the cars you're interested, do some research and make an informed decision.

Chevy Cobalt SS - Supercharged next generation Cavalier. Don't know much about it. Intriguing though.

Ford Mustang - Probably a fun car, probably not good in the winter.

Dodge SRT 4 - Haha - quite the little rocket, will embarrass most cars on the street with it's sheer power. Easy and cheap to mod to make even more power. Probably not so hot in the winter. It also looks like a Neon.

Are you open to used cars?

Wow I really like the 06 Impreza WRX sedan. Going to try take that out for a test drive within the next couple days to see if it's the car of the next few years for me. Thanks for all the suggestion guys, was a big help.

The WRX is a great car - interior is not the best, but definitely a fun car to drive. You may be able to get it cheaper in Saab skin though. A friend of mine has 2002 model. Had some issues with it, but overall a fantastic ride.

Because a whole boat load of them just got recalled for faulty brakes.

Without turning this in to a huge pissing fight I'm simply going to say that this is hardly a reason to start tossing the whole "mitsu/eclipses suck" lines about. Recalls happen, shit gets fucked up... my problem with the Eclipse is that I can't stand how the new one looks.... I'd love to debate this shit but I'm tired as hell and we're going to Magic Mountain in the morning. For the record this is the 2nd brake related recall since release... which does suck for them. It is there best selling car right now though, so it'll be interesting to see if this double recall affects sales....

For your use, like most people on this thread I'd recommend the regular Impreza WRX with your budget. Maybe wait a couple of months for the 06 model out soon (JDM version shown):

The 05 models still look great though (I like all Impreza versions), might even be able to get a deal on them since the dealerships will need to clear it out their current stock for the 06s. A buddy of mine got a pretty good deal on a black 05 WRX wagon a few weeks ago, he likes it a lot.

OH, SIR

the '06 wrx uses the 2.5l block from the (every other modern subaru). it's worth paying for over an '05. much more driveable low-end. also, i know you're not considering an auto, but auto turbo cars don't tend to be a great idea. the auto wrx in particular is pretty :(
