Summertime '06 is the best album of the year and (personally) top ten of all time for me

It's aggressive and the first disc is full of memorable tracks (second disc is great too and I don't understand why people don't like it)

I wish '06 was a full track. I get why he wanted to end it the way he did, but man... that beat, whew.

also, first half of Summertime '06 > Hell Can Wait > second half of Summertime '06.

Might Be Wrong is the only flaw on the album...but that doesn't come close to bringing down the rest of disc 2.

Then again, some people think the entire album is "too long" just because it has 2 discs dispite being an hour long total.

I actually prefer the second half of '06 to the first half

And yeah the album as a whole is fucking amazing. In any other year it would've been my AOTY because of how well put together it is as an album but sadly we got TPAB and that shit is just conceptually outstanding in its own right. Helps that it also has the SOTY and possibly song of the decade with How Much A Dollar Cost.

Personally I have two different lists. First list consists of albums and how each song cohesively fits together as a part of an overlying concept.

And then I have list of shit that just bumps. DS2 is probably tied with Rodeo for that one, with Sremmlife in second.

It's violent, but thoughtful. Bleak, but hopeful. It's sad and aggressive and playful. It's fucking amazing. It makes me have those things we used to get in middle school...emotions or something, right? I dunno. It's been a long, long time since I had a visceral reaction to an album like this. Probably Game Theory? Or When Life Gives You Lemons. But both of those were different.

Game Theory made me upset at the unfairness of the world. When Life is basically a storybook of my early life, it's a personal record. GKMC is some universal unification rap biblical shit. Summertime 06 is the angry thoughts of a young man who is both fed up with the bullshit of his world, but also proud of not only surviving it but thriving in it. It's a direct reflection of the thoughts of anybody who has to live with shootings, violence, death, racism, and not just being pissed about it, but drawing creativity from it while also just being weary of the same shit.

It's a whole album that reflects the Mobb Deep line that made them famous "I'm only 19, but my mind is old." But rather than reveling in the glorification of the violence and darkness, it looks at the world and sighs, thinking "ain't we past this shit yet?"

That's what Summetime 06 says.

I'm on "The Stroll" on this Blu/MED album.

Ehhh...

I need to go find that great post that Storm Chamber made about the rapping on that Gangrene album. There's a lot of that on here.

Future's social media buzz is fucking ridiculous though, not unlike the dumb drive by post I made that derails everything when he comes up. Meanwhile NPR picks up Vince Staples to interview him about Summertime 06 in longform discussions while everyone else is busy wildin out with Future on twitter and IG.

Different lanes but all the same it's fun to watch the shit unfold.

I really wanted to like Summertime 06, and there were obviously a few good tracks, but it didn't resonate with me overall. It's too bad. I loved the Hell Awaits EP. Maybe it's because I'm at a different stage in my life... Im not quite sure. Maybe I'll ponder it for a while and throw another essay at you guys.

Not saying anything and not particularly good at it...the downfall of many underground rap albums.

Still, I thought Madlib would at least keep us fed on the production...seems like he just tossed some throwaways on this.

I like Bad Neighbor, but yeah, it's not great. Blu doesn't sound too into it outside of a few tracks (shocker) and...MED isn't bad, but man a true Madlib and Blu album ala Madlib and Gibbs on Pinata would have been way better.

at this point i think i'm over the music media's love of future. buncha clowns that didn't give a shit about future until the ciara shit gave them a narrative to write about. and then somehow they all come away with the same takeaway points. it's a shame a lotta these cats can even eat off the written word

In general he has carved out a nice niche for himself in the underground game. Not like Currensy level of popularity/fanbase but I imagine that is his ultimate goal and highest ceiling. Plus they are touring together. So I guess not? But he won't achieve "mainstream" success and I bet that would just lead to him being chewed and spit out.

Around these parts, he is perhaps the most well liked artist in hip-hop right now. Plus critics are gonna start recognizing him even more.

I did not realize they were touring together.

pretty sure he's the most universally liked rapper in GAF-Hop?

I'm still banging Pronto EP every now and again.

I'm still feeling that shit he did with Worlds freshest.

Wax got some bars to be fair. Despite the comedy nature of the video and the chorus, dude raps nice on that second verse.

STICK TALK OFFICIAL VIDEOOOO

TALIBAN BANDS RUN EM STRAIGHT THRU THE MACHINERY

This tune fucking bangs! And Dirty Sprite 2 gets better with each listen. Wasn't feeling it as much as you guys at first, I said that to you. But...the album is actually quite nice.
