Follow me into a solo, get in the flow
And you can picture like a photo
Music mix, mellow maintains to make
Melodies for emcees, motivates the breaks
I'm everlasting, I can go on for days and days
With rhyme displays that engrave deep as x-rays

I'm also partial to his verse on My Melody. I take seven MCs....

There's also "I'm the R the A to the K-I-M. If I wasn't, then why would I say I am"

Ah that's where Eminem got that chorus from.

Remindse of this.

https://youtu.be/wK_MDwTTPKA

"Hop off the slave ship
Popped off my chain and took it to Jacob, I got it gold plated
Walked in that bitch like "Nigga we made it!"
I own my own masters
You know I ain't missin' no royalty statements
I can't be rated (God, God), damn Hov stunt on them haters
Sorry Mrs. Drizzy for so much art talk
Silly me rappin' 'bout shit that I really bought
While these rappers rap about guns they ain't shot
And a bunch of other silly shit that they ain't got
I'm on my Lupita Nyong'o
Stuntin' on stage, after 12 Years A Slave
This Ace of Spades look like an Oscar
Black tux, look like a mobster
Don't make me RRRRAA yah, nigga watch your tone
I come to court with black boxers on
Y'all hella jealous of my melatonin
I could black out at any given moment
I'm God, G is the seventh letter made
So when my arms & feet shackled I still get paid
All praises due
I'm ready to chase the Yakub back into caves
These are the last days, but do I seem fazed?
Showed up to the last supper in some brand new J's
I'm the true and livin', book of Hov
New religion, 8th wonder of the world, alien, superstition
You're blind, baby
Blind to the fact of who you are maybe
My bloodline's crazy
Kings and queens and Michael Jordan rings
I go estúpido, sucio
The flow is filthy, y'all can't kill me
I've been inoculated from the snakes and the fakes
And your corny handshakes, cock sucker we made it!"

One of Jay's greatest verses with complex rhyming/wordplay and quality writing, and a nice Rakim reference with "I'm God, G is the seventh letter made".

My other favorite Rakim reference from Jay is on Blue Magic.

This is really my way of saying I've never really listened to Rakim outside of features and one attempt at Paid in Full.

Where should I start?

Edit: His sound is just so "old" to me, is that possible to get over?

Eminem isn't the only one who takes tons of Rakim lines and resuses them. Hieroglyphics did it, and I'm sure many others did as well.

As for what album to start with, that's a tough question. The first two albums with Eric B. (or apparently so) both have sounds and features related to that era, such as those dull instrumentals and generally New School production. I say at least give them all a chance. Try Paid In Full again, probably.

And yeah, it really does come down to taste when it comes to age of the music. I love the sound personally, which is why I find them so easy to listen to.

Chopper is the best posse cut of all time, but Wu Banga 101 ties it in the best posse cut opening verse category even if the rest of the track doesn't live up to it.

Also No Scratches has one of the best choruses I've ever heard, especially with how it ties into the car metaphor in the actual verses.

Lupe is so good when he's not obfuscating.

"At first I had patience
But then that patience turned to waiting
And then that waitin’ turned to wasting my time, my time, my time
And then that wasting turned to hating
And then that hating got to racing
All around my mind, my mind, my mind......
So before we hit a wall, heartbreak and it crashes
Just walk away no scratches
(No scratches)"- Lupe Fiasco

That's because Paid In Full, musically, sounds old. If you're not into that sound it can be a barrier.

Ease into it with Don't Sweat The Technique (4th and final album) and work backwards. The sampling got jazzier, funkier, faster and they largely went away from DJ breaks after the 2nd album.

Don't Sweat The Technique
Juice (Know The Ledge)
Kick Along
Teach The Children (this beattttt)
The Punisher (The imagery in the second verse WHEW™)
Relax With Pep (This is slower, but still. Talk about influencing Eminem, listen to how he ends the verses here, the third one in particular)
Casualties of War (The 9/11 imagery in the third verse 2spooky)

etc. etc. I adore this album.

From there you can go to Let The Rhythm Hit Em

I straight up don't like Rakims albums that much, while I can listen to old Kool G Rap and Tribe era shit all day. Eric Bs production as influential as he was doesn't do it for me.

I found Paid In Full's production to be somewhat off-putting at first, but now when I hear it, it sounds magnificent. It was something of an acquired taste for me.

I love both Paid in Full and Follow the Leader, but have never listened to the rest of their shit. I need to get on it.

There are some varying stories on the matter. Marley himself said that Eric B did the beats, and that he was more of an executive producer, which would make the most sense.

Oh I'm not saying he should sing either lol. Not trying to hate on Drake but I am not a fan of his voice / flow most of the time (with a few exceptions) but he is surrounded by a great production team.

No they shouldn't that's hilarious though
Travis moan singing, like he did on the intro to "BITTSM" >>>>> Travis actually rapping, because then you get lines like "Stroke my cactus"

That Diplo song and the "I Don't Want To Do This Anymore" are also my two favorite X songs out of the 6 or 7 or so I've heard, and they're his two singing ones.

I don't care what Travis does as long as Astroworld is a return to form by some miracle. Also I'm almost through Chapter 2, a bit intense to listen to walking to and fro uni :p

Feels like something's going to jump out at you for me. I also feel I should start walking around a malevolent junkyard.

No one song has quite grabbed me yet, but I'm starting to gel with everything more easily. I'm also starting to distinguish their voices :lol I may listen to some random singles too.

I despise the trend of altering releases. Lamar's Damn has two different versions. One of them sounds inferior imo, it has different intros to certain songs, the addition of the Carl intro/outro in Fear, and possibly some different EQ'ing (unsure about this one). KTT has an overview of some of the observed differences.

The version I heard on the radio is the best version, yet some of the physical releases have now been updated to match the changes. Stop George Lucas'ing albums ffs.

It's happening. At least with music it's smaller to distribute and contained in one package, so to speak, which means it's possible to track down certain versions of releases in general (at least the more popular ones). Sad part about games is there might be some dramatic change in an update but no one is going to be distributing 10-50GB versions per patch, so eventually the originals are lost to time.

Just today contacted a developer about a patch that completely replaced the main protagonist's voice actor, seeing if they could offer a way to download the previous version's installer. They were like, 'nope, soz'.
