GAF is growing

This is imo, one of the best gaming forums on the planet. Mainly for the tech stuff being explained and revealed, elaborate OPs for games, and strict rules/bans and long application times.

Lets keep it that way. Not sying more members are bad, but this better not be the next consolewar gamefaqs.

My policies are not set by accident or whim, and it's obvious that they contributed heavily to the site getting to where it is today. I'm not motivated by greed, so there's no danger of core principles (minimalism, unobtrusive monetization, strict moderation) being changed to capitalize on additional exposure. We'll keep on keeping on.

Also, we have a 64 Xeon core platform with 124 GB ram, with most of the kinks worked out over the last several months, massively overengineered for our typical traffic. We handled Reddit front page and its 26,666 sustained concurrent, so I'm confident in being able to handle the major events for 2013 and scaling to additional cores and hats as necessary.

I think this is the biggest point.
In the past I was a lurker on GT forums, Gamespot, and other communities, but the atmosphere just didn't do it for me.
When I discovered Neogaf it felt different from the start. I've never been a person to join communities in the past and joining GAF has actually been a strange exception to the rule.
I think had GAF took a different, more open approach, it would've failed in the long run and speaking for myself, I know I wouldn't be a part of it. The core principles that you are trying to uphold are the essence.
I think that all too often good things basically get destroyed when monetization is heavily pursued (which is rather ironic).
I think Neogaf is a perfect example of a true and wonderful traditionalism that others could learn much from.

It took me about 6 months until I became a junior member. Before that I was a lurker for approximately 1 year. Still haven't created a thread now that I'm a member. I should think of things worthy of discussion. Maybe an Alundra appreciation thread or a natural sciences video/documentary thread in off-topic, I don't know yet. I like the way approval is done and how there are so many great OTs for new games here on GAF. Game of the Year and all the conference threads are fun too. I continue to browse here everyday now.

...

I will type up multiple responses to threads every day, then just not post. I like to read what other people have to say, learn a thing or two, form my own opinion, then get it out in writing.
...

I do this far too often. Sometimes I fear that what I'm going to write sparks some kind of controversy. I was never really good at arguing against certain points and this maybe the reason for that fear. Other times I just think that my post doesn't add anything to the discussion. Most of the times I agree with a certain opinion that was already posted - this makes everything much easier. However, it also doesn't add to a debate only reinforces the other opinion to which you've agreed with. On the other hand, this is the essence of debating: learning that you're wrong or admitting self-ignorance. I will stop rambling now as this is maybe just general knowledge.

9 months wait period. Banned for short periods twice very early on both in gaming. Learned my lesson and never got banned again. The trick is not to be a smartass.

I've been on Gaf for a.... long time. And honestly it feels the same to me as it always did.

Other than that period of time when :rolleyes.gif crapped up every thread.

It's been more than a year now, it feels like eternal youth ^^
And well I guess there's a reason for me still being Junior, so you know I accept that.

/realizing these days may be my last if there's going to be a big spring cleaning ; ;

PS: I don't get why people give so much credit to Pachter he's just someone who throws so many bogus info to be sure to get at least one correct...

I find it weird that people read without posting. Do they like, read GAF daily? Do they know individual members, despite never interacting with them? I don't think I could frequent a message board where I knew that I couldn't comment.

I started reading GAF regularly in 2009 but it wasn't until September 2011 that I decided to join. I was approved 4 months later.
At first it was pretty strange as I already was familiar with lots of members while I wasn't anybody to them...
I'm sorry if I ever came out as a creep :p

I often wonder why there aren't videogames ads on this site. games ads could bring a lot of money for evillore without sacrificing what the site stands for.

Yeah, after a while lurking you'll definitely start recognizing names, I guess for some the lurking is enough for them. It's definitely a guaranteed way to avoid getting in trouble or bannings! But yes, after even just a while of lurking you'll start figuring out what's what real fast.

Good lord, I don't think anyone will get rid of the approval system. Have you not noticed how many rubbish juniors we've had over the last couple of days? It'd be a hundred times worse without the approval system.
Exactly! I love the probation period, without it we'd be overrun by trolls and even greater numbers of fanboys. The approval is what keeps our board from turning into gamefaqs, IGN or V.
HOW IT TOOK ME 4 MONTHS

Lol if you think that is bad consider this, I was a junior from 2009 to 2011. If I were you I wouldn't expect to graduate from junior for anytime soon. This is a good thing though, it keeps this board from becoming a shithole like other boards around the net.

I just like to watch.

For some people simply reading and considering others opinions is enough. I read far more than I post since in most cases my views have already been expressed by another user. That and I also don't have any illusions my thoughts are so compelling that I absolutely must share them in every thread I find interesting.

I love this site.

I feel like, compared to my favorite posters (who number many), most of my contributions are pretty shitty... but then again, I have survived a number of bans that could have easily been nukes, so if mods really thought I sucked that bad they had plenty of opportunities to make it perma. Thankfully I can still interact with gaf, since I really enjoy it, and I'm happy that it's growing.

You never know what new junior is going to come in and have something really great to add. Maybe even become a favorite contributor. And if not, well it's always fun as fuck to watch 'em get nuked on their first days. With a console war brewing, oh man it's gonna be great.

It took me 7 months to get my account approved but before that i used e-mails that well not offical ones. So all in all took almost a year. But i found out about gaf a few years back with the fantastic Konami 2010 topic and off course DA2 return of the shit mountain for example.

Since then i have been stuck here and i like it.

Alright, fess up. What kind of lurker were you?

Seven

Definitely this one, and a little bit of Ten...

Not necessarily as I've learned about the port begging rule only when I started posting.
Good thing I managed to stay safe!

What do you have in mind? I honestly can't think of anything that'd work as efficiently at keeping trolls and idiots out as the current system does.

Over at redcafe, a manchester united forum they have a newbie approval process. You can only post in the new members forum and you only get promoted to the mains by gaining enough rep through your posts. The main forum can't see or read the newbies section, and the mods are the ones who give you rep. It's a good process when you want to find out who the trolls are.

I think Being a forum with this much activity is both a good thing and a bad thing. There is plenty of content posted regularly, but it makes it difficult in busy threads to have a proper discussion about things without it being lost in the "noise".

But you can't beat the forum for news, its fantastic, even the OT forum is a good source of real world news.

If it can be of any relief, I have faced the same dilemma with FFGAF. Been lurking this forum for more than four years, but it's only recently (a bit more than a month) I decided to reach the other side of the mirror, to be actually active around these parts. The likes of Dark Schala, Dunan, Meccanical, Shinta, Kagari and so on so forth weren't foreign to me at all, and I had to seed myself into their group in no time for a project of mine that screamed to see the light of the day as soon as possible. In retrospect, I would say the endeavor was rather successful, even though I can tell I rubbed off a couple of people in the wrong way in the process.

I almost never post. In fact, time for a thread on the topic that I never post any threads.

Be scared...very scared
