GAF MIX Exchange 2010

Let's do this. Its been too long. :)

I vote for a physical exchange like always, but I suspect that most people will want to do an mp3 compilation.

Who is in and what format should we go with?

UPDATE:

OK, here is the gist of what will happen.

1) In your PM boxes, you will receive the names and addresses of the three recipients of your mixes. Please finalize your mixes and have them out at the latest by the 22nd of January. This way, everyone should get their mix a few days after. I did my best to match people up based on what they told me they wanted and what they would be sending out.

2) Make some sort of cover art. If you want to hand-write your tracklisting and scrawl some epithet about James Cameron's Avatar, that is cool with me. If you want to go all out, with legit cover art and printed-out tracklisting, all the better. :)

What to do after you receive your mixes:

1) Listen to them all the through at least a few times. Do the person the courtesy of hearing their work a few times before you judge them.

2) Give a nice review of the mix. This has always been the most fun for me and I know most others enjoy it as well. I like to do track by track, some people would rather do just a few that standout, tell people why you love, hate, disdain, don't care for, or like the tracks on their mix. I appreciate it, even with I think someone is crazy for disliking one of my favorite tracks or something.

3)Post your mix online if you can so we can all enjoy your mix. Give it a few days though after the 22nd so we can all fully enjoy and appreciate the mixes we were sent without getting too distracted. :p

Mix exchange? I've never heard of such a thing on GAF, but it sounds up my alley. Care elaborating?

Back in Ye Olde days of GAF, we used to get a bunch of us together. Everyone would make a mix. This was before the proliferation of filthy mp3 players, so we would use our shiny CD burners to make mixes. At random, the mix exchange leader (in this case, me. Before Hotarubi had also done a few) would pick three people that that person would mail their mix to. In return, he would get 3 in return from 3 different posters.

It was extremely successful. Then the iPod happened and everyone got rid of their CDs and nobody wanted physical copies. In later mix exchanges, we would all just make an MP3 playlist and zip it up and put it on rapidshare or something.

Not as fun, but still great for finding great mixes.

Wow. This sounds like an incredible idea...hopefully people don't shit on my music taste too much. :lol

I think one time, there was a guy who put a bunch of pop-rock on his mixes. Everyone was too nice to say anything, but that will never end up being what people will want/like out of the mixes.

I have already begun compiling a mix that stretches generations. Those who receive my mix can thank me later. :)

Well since I worry so much of what others think I already began thinking of artists of different genres I can put in a mix. :lol

Oh, physical as well.

stealthedit: Also, if it's going to be three people should it be one mix to those three or three to those three?

I'm game, and I vote for physical copies. I make mix CDs all the time for friends, and my favorite part is doing original art for the cd and the tracklist.

I'm in. Will there be any restrictions as far as genre? Should we preferably stick to one genre on our mix, or is it meant to be a literal mix of all our tastes?

so we're just sending out our best mixes to whoever we are told to send them to, is it going to be random, or are we listing genres we like so that we don't end up with something like
country, i hate country music
??

AlteredBeast

Fork 'em, Sparky!
Let swoon make you a country mix. You will hate no more. Brilliant, brilliant mix. I highly dislike country music, too.

Let me tell you guys, once I received a mix that was comprised of purely liquid tension experiment and dream theater. I tried the mix 3 times and couldn't get past how much I disliked it... But I credit the guy for trying. I have gotten music from genres I dont normally enjoy and have grown to love them.

It has worked out incredibly well to keep it pretty random on who is getting what. I will compile the names on Tuesday night and give everyone their assignments. If you would like, say what you music preference is, not guaranteeing anything from m or the mix maker, though. :)

so far we have:

swoon

For a physical mix exchange. This will require album covers and getting your butt to the post office. :) Everyone can PM me their addresses at their leisure and I will divvy them up in a few days. :)

Posters, if you would like, state what you will be sending and what you would like to receive.

your country mix from 7 years ago is still in my top 5 ever. :)

Physical it is. :)

must invlude cover art and tracklisting.

do you happen to have a tracklist for that?

god this post had me pulling up art of the mix for the first time since like 2003, what the hell happened to that place.

Sounds like fun, I'm in.

Slight worry - I'm leaving the country for a couple of months on the 23rd. Will you give assignments in time?

AlteredBeast

Fork 'em, Sparky!
Yeah, as long as we get more responses, I will have assignments out within the next few days.

swoon, let me look around and see if I can find that for you.

I'm in for a physical mix. I'd also be interested in seeing folks upload digital versions of their mixes after the recipient has had a while to have the physical mix to themselves. We could have the best of both worlds!

That was always secretly my plan. :) There are simply too many good mixes to miss out on, but nothing beats getting a shiny disc in the mail. :)

I'm in. Shitty weather will make physical mixes a pain but I'll go along with it. Have to work in the stuff anyway. I'm interested in seeing what I end up with. Could always use more music in my life.

thats all you need.

I wouldn't mind participating, but I'm not going to be at my current address for much longer, so a physical exchange probably won't really work for me at the current time. I'm happy to do one for upload if that portion comes along, though.

Most people will make mixes in the 1980's recording radio/Hi-Fidelity track construction way and not literally mixing a long stream of techno/house/break beats/jungle etc. Just want to make sure that is clear. :)

But, you can do anything. We have had techno mixes before (aurora's mix last time, for instance), hip-hop, shoe gaze, pop, country, and everything in between.

I would encourage everyone to start PMing me their addresses and their desired music and what they will be sending as well. :)

Hota - if you have a good forwarding address, we would love to have your. Your mixes historically have been the best (top 3 at worst)

Well, I'm going to be staying with friends in Vancouver for an indeterminate length of time, but I'm not sure if handing out their address just to get some CDs is appropriate. I'll keep it in mind, though.

I'm up for it, With Physical Media Will there be country restrictions?

We never had much trouble sending overseas before. It might just be extra cheap postage and might take a little longer to get there. :)

Phobophile

Also, if most of you are just sending a CD-ROM, USPS postage will be dirt cheap as you can send it Media Mail. It might take a day or two longer but it's really cheap.

any of you digital mixers willing to do a physical mix?

If not, I guess I could pair you guys up, I still want a physical mix, as they make for the best mixes, imo.

I'm having a ton of fun with this. :D

I started putting together a mix last night, and the first song that I put on it sort of inspired a theme. It's sort of turning into a story told through music.

Genres all over the place (folk, punk, blues-rock, shoegaze), but I'm trying to structure it so it all flows together.

I forgot to mention, I'm all for physical mixes. Digital-only loses some of the fun.
