For those making physical mixes, should we make audio CDs or can we make MP3 CDs? Pretty much I'm just asking if we're limited to only 74 minutes.

I believe the idea is to remain within the constraints of a CD's normal capacity, i.e. so 75 minutes of music, give or take. I'm sticking to that for my digital mix(es?) as well, in case anyone cares to burn it to a CD afterwards.

Code:
You want to download the following file:

http://rapidshare.com/files/332930716/JazzMix.mp3 | 60264 KB

Unfortunately right now our servers are overloaded and we have no more download slots left for non-members. Of course you can also try again later.

Sometimes I forget how annoying Rapidshare is, but the site is nice enough to remind me.

Playlist compiled
Blank CDs ordered
Individual album arts made.
Envelopes primed

Should be sending my Cds off by the end of the week

Crap, dunno how I missed this. I'd love to be in for a digital mix exchange with anyone who is also late. :lol

I still have discs from Cosmic Bus from back in the day.

kitchenmotors, make a digital mix :)

Solaros and Archaix, PM me your addresses. I still have a few people to send addresses to. :)

Got my track list down, almost got the order right. Gonna work on the album art whilst giving it a few more listens. Hope to get it sent by the weekend :) All UK gaffers, so hope the blizzards don't delay the post!

What's a good alternative...?

Zshare, Mediafire, and Megaupload.

Here are mine: two 45-minute mixes that are essentially part of a whole, but length aside, it just didn't feel right as one. Kind of nitpick-y about this sort of thing, I guess. Won't pretend like they're the most approachable things in the world, but it's what I'm diggin' these days.

Part I // Part II

(click the pictures for bigger versions if you want to see what's on the mixes before downloading)

Should we name our mixes? I see one person has. Oh and Cosmic, I don't know why, but I really like that first track. Now listening to the rest.

Definitely not my usual type of music, but I'm really digging it.

I've been doing some writing tonight, and your first mix has been great for pushing some creativity out of me. So, plus one for you.

Will download your mix. Wish I had seen this thread earlier.

Almost to the end of Hotarubi's first part. As expected I'm diggin' it so far.

Dallow - Its a shame that most people overlook the first few Pulp releases. It is just such a beautiful album. And of course Felt (and sometimes Denim and Go-Kart Mozart) is my favorite band ever... Sounds like we do need to be friends.

Just been trying to finalise my mix today, it's an autobiographical account of my musical life through the medium of mix-tapery. It's like a discursive essay, explaining why it is I like to rock. I'm going to work on the artwork today and aim to get it sent out mid-week. Digi-version to follow shortly afterwards.

It's been great fun making this though, I hope my recipients enjoy it! btw, charmicarmicat, you live just down the road from me, I'm from Aldershot. Tiny world!

Spent a portion of my late, late night with Bowflex's mix and definitely enjoyed it. Hearing the familiar tones of Max von Sydow's voice immediately made me grin -- such a fantastic way to start things off, btw -- and it leads nicely into the skeletal Mount Eerie track. I really liked how the KLF song bridges the gap from swirling guitars into the rest of the mix, which has a distinctive sense of time and place. I wasn't too crazy about the Kevin Ayers and Peter Perrett songs, but those aside, this introduced me to several artists I'd heard of but never listened to before, and some completely new to me. Good stuff.

I've got perryfarrell's jazz mix to listen to this evening.

Heh, it's funny (and potentially confusing) how I still get referred to by my old username by some of the longtime members. :)

:D I'm glad you're enjoying the mix. I tried to make sure that each side was consistent in vibe and had an even flow.

Oh yes, I absolutely love Felt. Even have the original bedroom 45 "Index".

Most of the Denim and Go-Kart Mozart (my XBL tag) releases as well.
(including deleted single Summer Smash in all 3 formats when the keyboard player was selling them online)

Can those of you hosting via Rapidshare re-host? It seems their servers are only open to us plebs for about 10 minutes a day...

Also, for those of you making a big mix, how are you packing the files, one big one or individual MP3s?

I should have mine up tomorrow. I got my "cover" pic for it today and I just need to get rid of a locked file. Hopefully people like it. :lol

edit: Preference for a site to upload it on?

Haha, sorry about the confusion, but I'll always know you as Hota!

Anywho, I'm aware that my mix sort of loses direction and the flow definitely gets jaggy and jumpy towards the latter half. After working on it for a little over an hour, I kind of just gave up and threw a few pop songs, a ballad, and a few of my favorite heart-jerkers in the latter half to off-set the eeriness-into-heroin slow jams of the first several tracks - in hoping that it would be a fresh change of pace - but looking back it didn't work as well as I had planned. I've made good mixes before that hop around like that, but I don't think this one is one of my best.

Your mix however - now having given it multiple listens - is phenomenal! Excellent transitions throughout and the haunting piano on that Linda Perhacs song - my gosh...I don't think I've ever heard a piano sound like that. Might be one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard, really. (or at least since you put the Black Gold version of "Who Knows Where Times Goes" by Nina Simone a mix a while back) I have Parallelograms and I love it, but this one song is somethin' special...

As for everyone else, I'm heading down to Austin tomorrow to stay with some friends for the week, so I'll burn everyones mixes to discs and hopefully have some reviews when I get back.

It's never to late to make a digital mix! Get it up here man!

Also, Bowflex, I listened to your mix this morning, that was some awesome sleepy bus music man. I'd never heard any of those songs or bands before, it was great stuff, thanks!

Alright, even though I signed up for a physical mix, I've uploaded a digital mix anyway for those interested.

I made this mix to attempt to show the breadth, range, and variety of the metal genre as a whole. The playlist is more or less chronological, starting off with Sabbath off of Master of Reality in 1971 and ending with Baroness' track off of Red Album released in 2007. This playlist explores the genres of heavy, doom, power, thrash, death, black, sludge, and progressive metal with plenty of intertwining from other metal genres and some tracks with other non-metal genres such as hardcore punk, folk/neo-folk, and industrial. It's really hard trying to compile three decades of a constantly changing musical genre into under 80 minutes and not feel that you've left major shifts/evolutions in metal out of the playlist. Also, I tried to make this list as relatively accessible as possible, without compromising demonstrating the range of the genre. And I've added a mix of mainstream/more well known bands and lesser known.

Working on mine at the moment. Decided to actually mix the tracks together but some of the mixes are so awful... hope you all forgive me for that! I'll probably post it tomorrow.

I haven't listened to anyone elses yet as I get influenced so easily so wanted to get mine finished first. Looking forward to hearing them though.

The Mix I'm mailing out to my three victims includes Lady GaGa and Janet Jackson.

Wow, Phobophile you really went all out with your theme. I pretty much just resorted to putting in things I just happened to remember. Tomorrow, I'm going to buy the discs. Is there a specific type of disc I'm supposed to get? Just audio cds?

i think i forgot that comic bus was hota, though i thought i remembered hota sending me a mix with a marching band track on it, which seems odd.

i finished my mix tonight. it features a lot of artists "past their prime."

I finished my cover. Just need to print em off. Mine will go in the mail before the week is over. Haven't received one yet, though! :D

Oh, we're still free to make digital mixes? So I can still weird everyone out with my stupid taste in music?

Heh, I don't know if that was me; can't say that I've listened to any marching bands before! I do recall you commenting on my use of a Text song on one before... not sure if it was surprise, confusion or being flat-out appalled. ;)

Just 700 MB/80 min CD-Rs will work just fine. I have to buy more because I only made one copy and AlteredBeast sends me 3 GAFers' addresses in a PM. :lol
