Never order anything from TigerDirect.

And since I'm a Mac whore. Get a Powerbook!

This is good advice. Powerbooks rock. But, as Powerbooks are high-end and you're looking for a $700-800 laptop, let's look at what you've got.

Don't buy from TigerDirect, but that Toshiba is an okay deal. (Toshibas are nice and fairly durable but tend to be heavy.) Awfully heavy for what it is, though.

The Acer is a better deal, as long as you don't mind lugging around an even heavier laptop.

Weight doesn't really matter.
I'm asking OA, too.

1) Why does TigerDirect suck?
2) Can you guys help me find a kickass $800 notebook that I could have in my hands by next monday? I'm just so lost.

stay away from TigerDirect.

What do you want to spend and what do you want to do with it?

Dell has some deals going on right now.

Here is a good one:
Inspiron 9300
Intel Pentium M Processor 740 (1.73 GHz/2MB Cache/533MHz FSB)
17 inch UltraSharp™ Wide Screen XGA+ Display
512MB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 533MHz 2 Dimm
256MB NVIDA® GeForce™ Go 6800
80GB Hard Drive
8x CD/DVD burner (DVD+/-RW) with double-layer write capability
Intel® PRO/Wireless 2200 Internal Wireless (802.11 b/g, 54Mbps)
Free Printer
Free 2 Day Air

$1,237.00 before tax.

Replace 6800 with x300 64 MB, and it goes down to $1,188.00, but it would be worth the additional cost if you ask me.

I just got the Inspiron 6000 with the 15.4 inch screen and it is HUGE! I'm actually glad I didn't get the 17" 9300.

Why not? I have been ordering from them for 8 years. When they were call Misco. Unless the US tigerdirect is vastly different that the Cdn one.

This is what I need
-Roughly $800
-Effecient
-Ethernet Card and Wireless built in
-At least 40gig HD
-At least 512 megs of Ram
-CD-RW/DVD
-At least 2 USB ports

THANK YOU!!

GAF-
I'm so confused. I'm getting so many conflicting opinions from here, from OA, and from the person I'm shopping with.

Can somebody in the know please step up and tell me exactly what to get for my price range and explain why everything else isn't as good.

I just want to make sure I'm spending my money on the right thing.

How does this compare to the 1.8Ghz AMD Sempron?
Intel Pentium M Processor 740 (1.73 GHz/2MB Cache/533MHz FSB)
Sempron is AMD budget CPU, but it is a nice CPU.

A Sempron 3000+ would be faster then a Pentium M 740 or higher, but the Pentium M would have longer battery life.

Thanks for the help, element. Do you think you could find me something around $800? or aroung $950 with Office included?

Thanks so much/

I'd say that acer would fit your needs. I had a friend buy one recently, and it was great for school and stuff.

It is a shame you need it so quickly. The thing with laptops is there is always a HUGE sale from week to week.

Like last week CC had a similar laptop with DVD Burner for $499 after rebates.

If you are willing to deal with MIR, here is a good one.

here is another one.
http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?product_code=316555&pfp=BROWSE

you would have to upgrade the RAM

Pentium M have kick ass batt life, I have one in my Sony and it is great.

I have ordered stuff from TigerDirect with no problems, but never that expensive so...

If you have any CompUSA near you stop in and check, as older laptops are discontinued they mark them down to below cost and throw the 2 year warrantee on top. You just might be able to get a very good notebook for your $800.

Do you have a link? I can find the Inspiron on the website but not for that cheap.

Those look good, too, element.
How is battery life on the Acer compared to the compaq? 4 cell vs. 12 cell lithium ion. Is 12 cell 3 times as good?

4 cell is really bare minimum for batteries, but that's because the Acer is an economy model. You can always get a bigger capacity battery for it later.

So a 12 cell LiIon can fit where the 4 cell is? Thanks.
