Really lovely stuff on this page, everyone! I particularly love Andeeeh's photos of Japan.

I recently travelled through Oregon, including the Oregon Coast, and this is the first of many photos from the trip. I'm looking forward to digging into more of them. It's a stunningly beautiful part of the world.

Very nice , reminds me of the south coast of Devon for some reason :)

I just wanted to pop in to say it's a few months later and I still fucking hate flickr infinite scroll. Ugh. Browser starts chugging every time I load a lot of images.

Are there any decent photo-sharing websites where there's some genuine feedback/critique given? I'm on all the standards (Flickr, Tumblr etc) and while it's gratifying to get positive comments and such at first, it becomes pretty boring after a while. Suggestions?

Not exactly what you requested, but you can get pretty honest feedback on a few subreddits:

http://www.reddit.com/r/photocritique (for everything)
http://www.reddit.com/r/postprocessing (specifically for post processing).

1x.com has a good critique section. They only allow well thought out and honest critiques. I've started using the site recently and it is quickly becoming my favorite photo sharing site.

Please do tell about your progression of getting into street photography and also how and when you interact with the people you shoot.

I love how real street photography is. It's really what drives me to take photos these days. For me, having a particular subject to learn about and get better at keeps me taking photos. I started just a little over two months ago or so. Started shooting in areas that people would tend to be more friendly and not mind having their photograph taken. The art district along with the neighborhood all the hippies and punks live in is where I decided to start. Areas that tend to have people a bit more removed from mainstream society and are more into creativity. People like that love having their photograph taken. People who are usually well dressed also love having their photo taken too. Mostly just going out often to the same neighborhood and hanging out with the locals and just shooting people that walk by on the street or are hanging outside on patios of bars or at the parks. Just smile and take their photo. Having a cute small rangefinder helps since I think people find it not as threatening as a big DSLR with some fancy zoom lens. I rarely even ask, I just take the photo. Never been yelled at or had anybody get pissed. Asking can sometimes make it awkward from my experience. I've asked before and the person just seemed annoyed. Have gotten some good photos from asking though. Just get yourself out there and keep visiting the same friendly streets and spots often so you don't look like a stranger. As you build confidence and feel more natural taking photos move yourself into new places that may be more of a challenge. There is this transit station I think I'm going to start photographing at which I'm a little nervous since it gets all kinds of different people, some look really mean. I'm confident I'll adapt though.

check this guy out. he's one of my biggest inspirations currently.

Cool post (._.) I've been shy about shooting pics myself, and I always want to ask but then decide not to. I'm going to take your advice and just take before I ask or maybe ask as I take the photo. I just got an Iphone, and have been taking many pictures with it sometimes taking my DSLR made me feel like I stood out.

Also, cool link I like how the dude is using film stock, it helps set the mood of what he's shooting.

Here's some of recent stuff I've been doing, working with the iphone reminds me of working with medium format film. Also been fiddling around with the simple post-processing of instagram and flickr.

Thank you for an inspiring post.
Have you also tried going out and about with a DSLR? Seeing that that would be my option you made me quite anxious ;)
Not really, I already was

Love the gaming photos, de1irium. Seeing reactions captured like that is one of my favourite things about photography. Great work.

Hmm, not really. I haven't. Not for street photography. I sold mine and got what I have now so I could do this hobby more candidly.

I'm growing tired of shooting in the area I have been. I think it's time for me to move on. I'm growing restless. Shooting white college drop outs and restaurant employees by day, punks by night. I want REAL shit. I want to like find struggle and people society truly overlooks. trailer parks and true dirty sount punk ghettos exist not much longer than an hour's drive from me. How do I go about getting into places like this and photographing comfortably? Just thinking about it excites me and makes me want to go shoot but getting their and telling a story when you're there is so hard.

CrudeDiatribe those are some beautiful colours.

I accidentally woke up at 5:45 on Sunday morning and caught this with my X100S:

Got to play with one of those yesterday for a little bit ... was really impressed with it. Such a snappy little camera.

Does anyone use 500PX here? What do you think of it?

It's generally a nice site if you want to put up the best of the best of your work. But the community has largely become a flickr-style circlejerk. e.g. This was in the top 5 "Popular" images the other day.

There's still a ton of good photography on the site, but don't expect to get any exposure unless you play the game, and your images fit a certain aesthetic.

And Christian, your photography is splendid. You're a huge inspiration to me. =)

make a tumblr for your work. Only post your work on it as a photography showcase. tumblr has a huge community of original photographers and the tags allow for different sub communities to form.

Thanks crude, I'm using a 4s, for what it's worth. I haven't printed non of these and I don't expect them to look as great as prints from film, but it's been really fun just letting the thing focus and snap. I also feel a bit liberated thanks to it because I can now hike around without the weight of a DSLR, might end up using the Iphone as a scouting tool and then going back to spots I was really interested with the my D5000. I don't know if Gaf has an instragram thread but I'd love to follow fellow gaffers. (Dr3up, myself). Anyways, I did get some use of DSLR on my way back from Santa Cruz.

Guys, i need some help and advice, how do i get the colorspace to be even across all applications and windows itself ! A while ago i again had a run in with this issue, Light room looks like it has to look, but other applications and on other the PC's the colors are overblown. A small look on what i mean.

Z602r0i.jpg

Right so, a while ago i was messing around with the windows colorspace presets. Before then, all the other applications had the problem on the left. After i messed around, all the applications, Picasa, ACDSEE, Windows photo viewer, Paint even, started to show the picture corectly in the same colorspace as Lightroom. The only stuff that still shows with overblown colors, is the thumbnail preview in Windows 8 and Windows 8 Photos, as well as on most other pc's the colors are overblown.(the paint atm looks overblown because i had to take a screenshot from the Windows 8 photos app, as i cant minimize it. Yeah but the problem remains. I have Windows 8 and the Dell U2410, on a Adobe RGB 98 % accuracy profile. Any ideas guys ? How do i get stuff consistent across the majority on displays ? As everything looks right for me :/

For example, does this look to me like it looks for you Goodlife ?

4xLjFz3.png

Right so what is the middle ground here, what to do ? My head is full of fuck now, many folks monitors or apps can only reproduce the pics i made as pro photo rgb, in sRGB.

Yep, exactly the same

Right so what do i do, in what colorspace should i export them ? I have to just accept that most folks shitty monitors will show my pics either they be Prophoto RGb or Adobe rgb as SRGB and go on with life ? I sent that last pic i screenshoted to my friend, as he opened it up there was the same distinct difference, it looked right, when i sent each of those 3 pics to him afterwards, they all look like the SRGB one, this is fucking frustrating !

welcome to the wonderful world of color profiles.

For displaying on the web sRGB or no color space at all.
For printing Adobe RGB or ProPhoto.
For editing and archiving Prophoto.

Lightroom by default uses prophoto.

Do that and be happy.

yeah but how do i decently proof the pictures, if lightroom on its own only shows them in pro photo rgb. But when i export them in srgb the colors are way off ;(

I still post there, but the community has been going downhill for awhile. Too much voting spam and meaningless comments. Plus it has gone from being about posting a persons best pics to people dumping 1000 vacation photos at once. Still not a horrible site. Plus it doesn't cost anything. My photo uploaded yesterday is sitting at 4600 hits, so if you can get a photo decently ranked it will get seen by a lot of people.

Love the energy captured in the first pic. Available light used in that one?

Bounce flash. The light in these venues is so often flat and boring, especially on stage where it's dimmed so the crowd can see the projector. For a while I worried that flashes would distract/annoy players but I've shot a few tourneys this way and nobody has ever said anything, so I roll with it. I keep the ISO high, so I'm not dumping tons of light into the room. The results are way better than just ambient.

There was also a dood at the foot of the tower trying to shoot lightning with his 5DMkII, I think he got a few before I left!

So I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction. I want to start learning how to do some nice post processing editing and I was wondering if anyone could help me out. I made a few edits to this picture, mainly adjusting some exposure and what not with lightroom, but I'd like to know what I could do to make it better. I'm looking to convey that warm, fuzzy feeling. Any help and critique would be great!

Just started playing around with a Nikon D60 and D7100. D7100 is quite the daunting camera to use with all those options and buttons to press. This stuff is fun, even if I have no idea what I'm doing ha!

Some photos I took tonite:

Glorious thread! Very inspiring work.
This is really cool! It's so gross and creepy and completely unrecognizable. Also don't underestimate Pixelmator, I live that app!

Thank you. I've been playing around with Pixelmator recently and really like it.

Awesome, love these. Maybe you can crank up the contrast and colors and make them pop even more :)
I like this one the most, gives me a docu / shaky cam vibe. "Teens exposed using levitation!" And the last one is great as well.

Not much to share, here are a couple of film ones that I've dug out of the archive.

Scanned a couple of days ago, taken last year:

I also got this thing here imported from Japan:

A Fuji GW690, in fantastic condition. Can't wait to develop my first roll of 6x9 medium format, that's the closest I'll get to 4x5 large format without switching to a press/land/rail camera. It has gotten great reviews all around, here's the review that tipped me over the edge to finally getting one: http://www.pascalvossenphotography....0ii-a-k-a-texas-leica-a-photographers-review/ (it's about the second version of the camera, but lens and all that is identical)

Awesome! I recently got a Mamiya 645 Pro. Medium format - so nice! I've been tempted to buy a cheapish 6x9 press camera. Not going to get great optical quality without breaking the bank a little but I just want to see those huge negs!

Also is that an OM-10 I see?

The Mamiya 645 Pro is a fantastic system, many great lenses and if I'm not mistaken you can even get digital backs for it (if you have the money that is). I've heard nothing but good things about it but never had the chance to try it out.

I really wanted a press camera, but they were like $150 more, in semi-bad condition + I need to upgrade my darkroom stuff and lug it around on hikes... 6x9 in a rangefinder body is a good compromise. But man, I really want to try large format one day, you're absolutely right it's about "them massive negs". I'll probably just save up money over a couple of years and splurge on a wooden field camera. I'm still learning :)

Yes, that's an OM-10, good eye! I picked it as comparison because it's like the smallest SLR ever, so the GW690 would look even more freakishly big.

Trippy/cool photos Seventynine.

Got to play with a twin lens Yashica in one of my photo classes and absolutely loved working with medium format, was thinking of picking one up for myself do you guys have some recommendations also what are these press cameras?

Get either a Yashica or a Mamiya TLR. Don't go Rolleiflex, they're like the Leicas of the TLR world; really expensive. The Mamiya and Yashica go pretty cheap on eBay, but try to find them locally through whatever means you have. You get to look and check them out personally, and maybe meet like-minded or someone with a story. But since they're all mechanical there's rarely anything not working as intended. I bought a Yashica LM from a 98 year-old man. He bought the camera in the 50's, and it still works flawlessly.

Press cameras are large format cameras and shoot, usually, 4x5 inches negatives (but they also shoot smaller sizes) and were used by journalists for press photography back in the days. Weegee is a quite famous press camera photographer. Here he is with his camera:

weegee.jpg

(EDIT) Never thought about this before. But medium format is usually measured in centimeters, 6x6, 6x9, 6x4.5 and so forth... but large format is in inches :D
