I'm gonna run 30! Nintendo Revolutions on that thing simultaneously. 480/2400 == 6 screens down... 640/3840 == 5 screens across.

6*5 = 30 screens.
 
Still waiting to take the HD plunge myself. My fiancee and I were discussing gettinga 61 inch DLP HD set next year and re-doing the living room. Right now I'll stick with my Panasonic Tau with Component inputs. I may grab another small set (i.e. less than 36 inches) with HD fucntionality to get me over the hump. I've seen some nice affordable Samsung sets at Costco for a good price. :)

Its only 22 inches diagnol, too. Its so sharp it can cut your cornea.
 
I have my 27 inch Samsung which has served me well this generation, and while it doesn't have 720p as far as i know, it does do 1080i so I'll be pretty good for a while, until I finally get a new place and splurge on a widescreen set.

Ya, I think I'm ready =)

It's sorta weird. I don't like how LCD panels look, but I'm totally in love with my Sony LCD Projection. There's a definite difference in image quality so don't write one off as being the same as the other. One thing to keep in mind when getting an HDTV is to question how much standard definition TV you'll still be watching. A lot of DLPs look bad when showing anything but HD content.

I've read complaints on the AVS forum about Panasonic widescreen CRT HDTV sets and converting 720P signals. Don't have one myself but you may want to do some searching on the forum.

I'm not ready for the HD era yet. I'm still debating between what I want. I'd like to go DLP or rear projection LCD but there seems to be too much upkeep with those. I'll probably stick with CRT. Maybe some hot new DLP or RP LCD technology hits later this year, but for now I may stick with a widescreen CRT. Probably the 34" model of the Sony I have linked in this thread.

DLP technology per se has nothing to do with how good or bad standard def TV looks. That has to do with how well a particular TV's, be it DLP or LCD, scaler and deinterlacer handles SD content.
 
Hah. I'm not buying an expensive new tv for quite a while... there's a reason I play video games and not computer games, you know.
 
I have a 65 inch that goes to 1080i. I hoping some TV tuner for my cardbus on my laptop comes out that supports component to I can play it on here too.

I own one of these very sets, and let me tell you: They are freaking amazing. It's a CRT tube, naturally, so black levels are awesome, much better than any type of projector. Geometry across this entire product line is pretty spot-on - my set was practically good to go once I plugged it in, and I didn't have to do that much fiddling in the service menu, and all hi-def signals look superb.

The only problem with the set is that the line doubler that's built-in is an absolute piece of shit. You will want to vomit when you see a signal running in 480i. Unfortunately, that also means a lot of PS2/Non-progressive scan games look quite mediocre - if you've got a nice component cable hooked up, it's certainly reduces the blow, but don't be surprised when interlaced signals look a tad bit on the murky side. I suppose this is a trait for pretty much all sets with line-doublers, though...

Also, not really sure if this is a big deal for you or not, but the menu system it uses isn't exactly the most streamlined or polished. I find I do a lot of fiddling in the menus when changing between movies and games, since movies tend to be a bit on the bright side in comparison to games, so it's sort of a con on my end, but it's not a serious issue.

Really, if you want the best hi-def CRT monitor available, it's either this or the Sony Wega set mentioned earlier, only this Samsung is a hell of a lot cheaper and the geometry isn't as pissy. I definitely reccomend it.

Uhh..my Samsung DLP displays pretty damn good standard TV. Much better then any regular TV i've seen. You can and should check TV's out at stores but keep in mind sometimes those displays have been there a long time and are not properly set. The Circuit City where I got my DLP set is a great example. I had seen the Samsung elsewhere and had researched it well and knew what it looked like. In the store though the Sony LCD's looked tons better and the DLP Samsung was set way too dark and looked like shit compared. I still got the DLP, brought it home and its fantastic and set properly. Now I just need more goddamn HD stuff to watch on it.

By the way Marty, great show you have there on your TV. I am so pissed Comcast here doesn't carry The WB in HD yet though. Thankfully they have all the others so next season I will be tivoing Smallville and watching Lost in HD.

I have the 32 inch verson of this sammy. I have no complaints. But I do think it only does 1080i. I would love to find out it does 720p.

I wouldn't pay more than $700 for it right now.

Got a $180 Samsung 21 inch TV back in 2000, and it works damn fine. Fuck no, I'm not ready for HD era. Not until I can get something similar for a reasonable price ($250-$300 maximum)
 
My dad has a HD plasma in HK, but here in the UK, I only know one guy with a HDTV and he owns a audiovisual equipment store so it makes sense. Otherwise, I don't know anyone here who cares about HD here. Unless you see how awesome HDTV with HD content is, it's hard to be upset about PAL TVs here. Next-gen gaming might change that, Sky, Canal+ and other premium services will be launching HD channels in late-2005/ 2006, but I don't see HD truly having mass appeal until at least 2010 when BBC is 100% HD.
 
Currys and Comet have started showing HD material on one of their HD-ready TVs (a Samsung 45" DLP). I saw it this weekend and it looked awesome! I'm so ready for HD gaming after seeing what even regular broadcasts looked like in high def

They are planning to get you with the World Cup next year. Fully HD broadcast, with 20 HD cameras at each match. Lots of demo footage in stores across Europe. They'll use that to showcase HD.

And if it looks anything like those Comet demos mentioned, you'll bite. They look fantastic (although they are WMVHD demo reels, so designed to show off HD).
 
No room means I'm stuck under the 20" range for the forsseable future, so I'm pretty much stuck with the set I got earlier this year.

Yeah, yeah, LCD Monitor = Poor blacks + ghosting, but I've found that to my eyes the image clarity is more than worth it 99% of the time. The fact it also supports everything but 1080p and also works as a nice monitor when I hook up my laptop to it are very nice bonuses.

I wish I had room to get at least something approaching 30" with a 16:9 ratio, but for now, yeah I'm ready.

Yep. 1280x720 (nice size, often they are 768 pixels high, so this is perfect 720p resolution - so no scaling)

It doesn't have component inputs (bad for normal progressive DVD players and Xbox 360), but it does have HDMI and HDCP (v.good for PS3 and if you get Sky HD which will need HDCP for protecting movies)

It also has VGA, so you should be able to use a VGA adapter with the X360.

X360 will almost certainly have an HDMI connector available. But the fact that this set does not support DVI or VGA is retarded. I would look elsewhere.

1. the set does support VGA. The site just calls it PC RGB...its Comet, a non-specialist retailer.

2. I thought X360 wouldn't have HDMI outputs as its display chip is analog? Its been mentioned on here before. Anyway, doesn't matter as they've already shown a VGA cable accessory. Yes it will work with X360.

Yes, but worth it to get HDMI. Thats your killer connection right there. All the main digital HD satellite and cable guys will use that in Europe for their services. If you don't have one, you are mostly fucked.

Yes, you can't plug in your progressive scan DVD player, but your next one will have HDMI out.

I never said it was tied to the technology. I said a lot of the DLP sets don't show standard definition too well. It was one of the reasons I went with a Sony Grand Wega LCD Projection over DLP. That was checking out standard definition on the best DLP sets out there.

Actually, I did a lot of comparisons before I ended up buying and the Sony just displayed a nicer looking SD picture. This was being reported on AVS forums as well which I crossed checked my findings to make sure it wasn't just the settings on the TV. I also played around with the settings when doing my test comparisons. The killer for me though was lag found on some Samsung DLP sets when it came to playing stuff on the PS2. Apparently, a lot of the models at the time had a slight lag in the upconversion of the video signal that hindered playing games that were in 480i. That sorta just sealed it for me.

As for the picture, heh ya, that was the best picture I took. Fortunately, it's of a great show with the hot Kristen Kreuk =)

Because they have crappy scalers.

Sony's DRC was a good first scaler. Philips have pixel plus now, which is also good. And then there is the Faroudja solution (which my DVD player uses to great effect). All of which can make a HD display look great with SD material. Mine certainly does. It may even reduce the perceived jump from SD to HD because I'm effectively already watching HD (albeit scaled up).
 
I live in Australia and bought a new tv in January 2k4. I wont be able to buy a new tv till 2010- already 2 tv's in the house. :(

Uhhh, no. I've been biding my time, but HD has been on my radar long before the 360 or PS3 were on the radar.

While were at it, can someone point me to a DVD player with componant video out ? :D

And i've been thinking about a new TV for about a year now. After watching a HD demo at a store and with the new consoles taking advantage of this technology i decided it was the right time to dive into HD gaming.

To begin with, what type of display do you have? What type of inputs does it have, i.e., just component, DVI, HDMI, or all of the above?
