I honestly prefer Earthworm Jim 2 on the SNES over the Genesis myself. But the Genesis version of the game is still great. My favorite version of EWJ 1 is the one on the Sega CD. Genesis comes in second though.

Whoever picks Altered Beast is a fool, I tell you. That's not a good game and never has been.

Nah, it's great. It's just goofy as hell, and (if you're playing the arcade version) hard as shit.

In hindsight it might not have been the best title to debut a new console with, but the Mega Drive version is a worthy port, and I remember being very impressed with the jump in graphics from the NES/Master System.
