I have pretty much this list on my Mini. Including Hyperstone Heist, Pulseman, Sonic 3+K, Castle of Illusion and a few others I likely forgot. VF2 was on there by default, but its ass.

Alien Soldier is absolutely masterful. I beat it on Mini, Super Easy mode though. It takes dedication but once you get the hang of the controls.. knowing how and when to deflect, hover and super attack its really fucking flawless. Gunstar is... just as great really. Its a bit more accessible or rather the learning curve is a bit lower.

SoR3 is great, but try to play the JP version or better yet the translated rom. This game has the best mechanics in the franchise... maybe until 4 or better depending how you look at it.

EDIT: Rocket Knight bro

Red Zone and Sub-Terrania.
The Euro devs. Battle hardened from years of toiling with the Motorola 68000 could really make the Megadrive sing...

Ranger X too.

Forgot to mention Gauntlet 4! Megadrive version is the best version of the classic arcade, features the original, new Quest mode and a sound track that's literal witchcraft.

It's on your list, but I can't recommend Landstalker enough. It's such a special game, absolutely amazing.

Castle of Illusion and Quackshot, for sure.

Out of the listed games I recommend:
- Landstalker
- Phantasy star IV (playing earlier games isn't required, but it enhances certain story beats)
- Shining Force
- Streets of Rage 2

But you should really get an emulator and try these instead.
(If you don't have a PC, buy a Steam Deck, Retroid Pocket or use your phone.)
- Starflight
- Buck Rogers: Countdown to Doomsday
- Dungeons & Dragons: Warriors of the Eternal Sun

Starflight and Buck Rogers are unique because they are vastly improved versions of early micros, PC & Amiga games. They look and sound better and are much more playable than the originals. Eternal Sun looks like a CRPG, but it was only ever released on the Megadrive and it was developed by Westwood. One of their forgotten games.
What A gold box game on genesis and I didn't know it?
Is that Buck Rogers game similar to the pc version or watered down?

Starflight I never knew existed, looks similar to star control or starcom unknown space.
Warriors of eternal sun i never had on Genesis. I had a 386 so gold box games were my thing, plus i had the tg16 order of the griffin on that system. Was it a decent d&d game?

Robocop vs Terminator
Rolling Thunder 2
True Lies
Two Crude Dudes

Lots of good recommendations here. Skimmed through and didn't see these titles. Enjoy!

yeah, you could call it a gold box game, it's simplified for console but there's plenty of secrets and depth for its time. There's the classic joy of finding a +1 weapon.
Some passages are navigated in a Eye of the beholder style with an overhead view you spend most of time.

The Buck Rogers game is slightly watered down (cart size considerations), fewer classes and there's a overhead view instead. But I think it works much better.

Looking at the NSO list yea there are not a lot of EA games on it which is a shame because EA was putting out tons of bangers on Genesis.
I'd argue that it was when EA came of age.

Desert Strike ftw.

Edit: Think i still have the OG Fifa upstairs somewhere.

Vectorman 2 and Sonic 3 & Knuckles?

I could say Chakan too, but it's a damn hard game. Not for everyone

I always loved TMNT Hyperstone Heist on Mega Drive. I thought it stood shoulder to shoulder with TMNT Turtles In Time on SNES. And it has an amazing soundtrack as well.

NHL'94 must be on the list if no one has mentioned it yet.
Guilty pleasure of mine was Pirates! Gold.
General Chaos, Haunting, Road Rash - Peak EA.

Some really great under appreciated late generation Genesis games from Disney and licensed titles from Looney Tunes.
Cool Shadow.
I always appreciate the animation.

alien soldier, back then it's the hardest game i ever played before i discovered gynough/wings of wor

You're a man of refined taste, diffusionx diffusionx

  • Mickey Mania: The Timeless Adventures of Mickey Mouse (some say this version is better than the SNES version)
The SNES version doesn't have fire in the pits in stage 2, SNES invalidated

Red Zone and Sub-Terrania.

Ranger X too.

This game haunts me. It was a random gift from my parents as a child and I always felt bad because I found it too difficult. One day I will finish it, even if it's with save states. It's been about 30 years at this point, I might be ready.

My favorite Dpad ever. I even use this to play tomb raider remastered and pretend I'm on the Saturn.

Unfortunately, the SNES ports of Traveler Tales' Mickey Mania and Toy Story were hack jobs, the Genesis versions are the original and are far superior. I don't think they are great games though, either of them, only great technical showcases.

My Top 5

Alien Soldier
Phantasy Star IV
Shinobi III: Return of the Ninja Master
Sonic the Hedgehog 2
Streets of Rage 2

Beat those or die an ignorant, unfulfilled life.

How's that one? Been thinking about giving it a go, but the lack of in-game is daunting lol.
its prob my favorite genesis rpg. Its a 1st person dungeon crawler with turn based battles. It is difficult so you will need to grind to lvl up and buy better gear to get deeper into the labyrinth. My favorite part of the game was the amount of secrets to uncover.
