GAF Wii Homebrew thread: Homebrew, emulators, USB disc installs! Easy tutorial!

All I can suggest is that you try running it again. Occasionally random errors just happen. Also, ensure you have a stable WiFi Internet connection

question about NTFS format: is the ntfs_write command only necessary for installing games?
It is necessary for installing games, but it is also necessary if you want to store images or themes on the NTFS drive too. Basically, if Cfg needs to write to the NTFS drive at all, you need that option.

No good, the error is happenning every time. Strangely, I cannot connect to the Homebrew Browser either. Just found out... It never passes "IP adress of www.codemii.com successfully retrieved". It's not my internet because I can use the Opera channel just fine.

I'd really like to play Black Ops from my HDD since there's reports of drives being burnt out by the disc, and I'd hate to kill my launch Wii.

My game hangs on the "Loading..." screen. I was told to update my Wii to IOS249 r20 with IOS 57, or install Waninkoko Ciosx20b Installer + Hermes V5.1. I don't have a clue what these are or what to do... :/ I'm unsure which IOS are already on my Wii, and don't want to brick or unhack my machine by accident just to play Call of Duty.

Can anybody help me out here?

Edit: I'm running USBLoaderCFG SD Channel v.56-222 m-load.

OK, first update Cfg to 61b5, which is the most recently released version. Also, update your IOS249 but use base 57 instead of base 56. Alternatively, use a different slot, e.g., 248, instead of 249. Then set up Black Ops so that it's IOS option in Cfg is the IOS you updated.

Pardon my noobiness. Do you mean to choose 57 instead of 36 on step 4? I don't see any mention of 56. I feel like such a moron for not understanding this. If you can help me further I'd very much appreciate it. Thanks for helping me, Clipper.

Instructions
1) Extract the folder to the Apps folder on the SD card
2) For offline install: Get the IOS wad you want to use as base with NUS Downloader
3) Run the Installer with HBC
4) Choose IOS36 (or IOS249 if you already had a cIOS). If IOS36 doesn't work, follow a guide to restore the Trucha Bug.
5) Choose wad install for offline mode or network install for online mode

Edit: I guess I'm still not sure if I'm updating or installing for the first time this IOS249. I smply don't know which IOS have already been installed on my console.

That's not about homebrew but I hope someone can help.
I replay one piece unlimited cruise 2 and after an hour it has a disc error.
I already changed the lens 2 month ago but now that's just this game that stop working after the title screen. Is this really the game who's broken?

Hey Clipper

I'm trying to apply some cheat codes to Super Mario 64 (VC), I'm using Gecko 1.9.3.1, every time the loader say that the SD codes are applying, but then during gameplay there is no effect. The cheats correspond to the same region as the game NTSCU (NAAE), using AccioHacks app.
Gecko menu screen tells me that it's using IOS249
Tried with: GC pad, Wii pad, default, VBI.

My Wii is 4.3

I tried with LoZ:Ocarina of Time, and Sin & Punishment, and the same thing, the cheats just doesn't apply even when Gecko say they were applied, or the game simply crush.
It works just fine with my WiiWare titles however.

I download the .gct direct from gecko codes and the problem still there, so it's not problem of AccioHacks.
WiiWare codes and Wii disc games codes work with Gecko, so I doubt it's a problem with the app...
Removed my GCN memory cards, even tried with a Classic Controller and Gamecube controller.
I tried with other game and the same thing.

any idea?

This might be a stupid question but I haven't seen any mention of a Yu-Gi-Oh exploit for 4.3 PAL consoles on the wiki. Is there any specific reason why it was omitted?

I'm asking because the german version of the game goes for a quarter of the price of lego indy (which I already own on another console).

What page are you following? The instructions you copied are not part of the current IOS249 instructions.

Did it only happen once? Read errors can just occur on any game due to random happen stance, so unless the problem is repeatable, it's not an issue.

Sorry, I can't really help with cheat related issues. I've never played around with them all that much.

Because I wasn't aware that it was finally properly ported to PAL.

It happen each time with this game since this error.
The music of the title screen doesn't begin and the screen go to the disc error message.

Try checking the disc to see if there is any crud on it. If you don't experience problems with any other game, then it is probably that disc. Are you able to rent or borrow a different copy of the disc?

Still no good. Could having IOS249 installed be a problem?

I'm wondering about changing my drive from WBFS to NTFS but will the ripped games take 4,7Gb or they can be "scrubbed" to take less, even on NTFS?

IOS249 would not be affecting this. However, try using it instead of IOS236. I really don't know what's going wrong in your system. If you can't get it working, you can just update the Wii to 4.3. As long as your HBC is up to date, it won't cause any real trouble and you'll just have to install IOS249 again afterwards.

Ripped games are actually smaller on FAT32 and NTFS drives than on WBFS drives.

I give that as a link to download the installer. You are meant to use the instructions in the Wiki to actually install it.

Upgraded to 4.3 and reinstalled IOS249. No problems so far! Thanks much for the help. :)

I figured it out. Thanks a lot for the help. Black Ops is working perfectly after updating 249 with base 57. :D

Starwolf_UK said:
I'm curious, is that due to WBFS having 4MB blocks on the drive while the other two have 4KB or is there something else?
Yep, although the numbers may be slightly different, the reason is correct. Although FAT32 clusters are often 32kB, they're still nowhere near the cluster size of WBFS.

So I got this little "Epic Mickey" game (Euro version) and would like to play the hell out of it at my SO's place. Something tells me the sucker is going to require System Menu 4.3 (I think I currently have 4.1, I can't really check right now as my Wii is already packed away). I take it this is the way to be able to actually play the game and keep my homebrew? I noticed the "Smash Stack" exploit for 4.3 and it struck me as an excuse to finally get SSB Brawl but it doesn't look like this is going to work on my EU Wii.

If you already have homebrew, you don't need Smash Stack. Note the launch options list already having the HBC installed before any of the game-based methods. You also don't need Smash Stack if you are on 4.1, even if you don't have the HBC. You only need to use one of the game-based attacks if you are already on 4.3. Currently, only Lego Indiana Jones and Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's are acceptable games for hacking 4.3 PAL Wiis.

And there are two options for keeping homebrew while being able to play Epic Mickey. Upgrading is one of those, but the other is to avoid disc updates.

Mario All Stars (AU) and DKCR (AU) both have updates on them... would these just be channel updaters and safe to run? Or should I just boot through Gekko.

I'm on 4.3.

Thanks a lot, any recommendations on what application I should use to upgrade? Or is updating my Wii through Nintendo indeed safe if I already have the HBC installed?
Either use a recent game or a disc with a recent update as specified on the tutorial.

All discs from now on will try to upgrade IOS249 and IOS222 into stubs. You either have to start putting those into the unstubbed slots (247, 248 for 249 and 224 for 222) or do the avoid disc updates steps.

The updates on the discs you mention are just plain 4.3 updates.

Watching you type up essentially the same thing over and over I really think you should have all these answers either in the wiki (if you don't already) or saved in previous posts here that you can just post links to.

BTW I could just imagine how many people would have the old avatar/tag combos if the old rules were applied in this thread. I'm not trying to be mean to those asking questions.

Yeah, I plan a big rewrite of the Wiki FAQs soon. They are getting a little out of date.

There is a link to snes9x in the OP so I'm assuming it's not forbidden to discuss installing it? I haven't found any useful info in the readmes yet, and haven't seen any instructions on the wiki.

*edit* got it working

Like magicalsoundshower above (fucking awesome name, by the way), I bought Epic Mickey today, and was also disheartened to see that I need to update. However, I no longer view Homebrew as worth the bother of updating all the time, as I never ended up using it for anything other than playing my US copy of Smash Bros. Brawl, and it's got to the point where I think I'd rather just buy a UK copy (it's dirt cheap now), or play it on my US Wii (which I haven't been able to sell) than have to deal with this every time Nintendo put out a new update.

If I used Epic Mickey to update, would that fuck my Wii up? Or better yet, is there a fast and easy way of clearing my Wii of anything unoffficial?

Thanks.

Whats the general opinion of DIOS-MIOS for playing GC backups from USB? The compatibility list I saw on the internet looked atrocious?

It's not ready for prime time. There are at least 2 non-USB solutions that work 100 times better for backing up your legitimate Gamecube games.

Was there ever a solution to the persistent re-updating? I played Sonic Colors for a few times from the disc and every time the update would demand to be re-done since I reinstalled 239 and 222/223 between each. Eventually just ripped it to my drive, but it was annoying.

I linked to it a few posts above and then commented later to Clipper about how he has to keep posting the same thing over and over because apparently people don't read. :D

Yeah, to both Ben2749 and The_Technomancer, please just read over the last two pages of thread. I've already answered your questions about three times in that space and I'm not going to do it again this time.

Both of you would definitely be receiving the dire consequences if Red was still a mod...

So. I want to get HBC on my Wii. It has the 4.3U on the system. Is the only way to get it right now is from those 3 games? I think its like Lego Indiana Jones, Smash Brothers and something else I forget. I was reading up on a thing called bannerbomb, so you didn't need some other game to get this to install, but it doesn't work on 4.3 and up. I guess I'll wait awhile.

You need one of the games.

All the instructions you need is in that wiki and Clipper wrote almost everything in there.

Converted to NTFS from WBFS. It was about 100x more of a pain in the ass than it was worth. Maybe 500x.

edit: so is there a way to tell what ioses I have installed? Too often when messing around with this stuff I find myself trying to remember exactly what I've installed and how, so if something isn't working right I just install things again.

guys I'm looking through this guide as I just bought a wii last night from gamestop for 99 dollars. The wii has 4.3u on so that would mean I need to have smash bro or indian jones to put homebrew on it? Is there any way around that since I don't have them? Guess I'm off to buy smashbros looks like that or indian jones are only way.

I just bought SSMB today. I can't get it to work. I followed the directions. I deleted the custom stages from the list. I put the files it said to in the root directory of the SD card. I go into stage builder and it just goes to the stage list, which it just shows nothing, but NEW!

Any tips?

Yes, you do need a game, but Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's Wheelie Breakers is also suitable along with SSBB and Lego Indiana Jones. Just to check, the guide you are following is this one right?

So you have a file called sd:\private\wii\app\rsbe\st\st_080805_0933.bin ?

And another called sd:\boot.elf ?

And you do have a US Wii?
