GAF Wii Homebrew thread: Homebrew, emulators, USB disc installs! Easy tutorial!

Is there any drawback to using Homebrew Channel, etc. or with some time and proper care I can emulate everything (Wiiware access, WiiShop, etc.)?

Does anyone know what firmware comes with Black Wii for Europe?

Also, is the wiki type of mix-and-match? e.g. if I have HC I can skip all steps involving HC when installing something else? Is there any order while installing things mentioned in Wiki (except when required i.e. HC before anything else)?
There is a general order that should be followed by using the "What Next" links at the bottom of each page or looking at the guide page for various tasks you might want to do.

The only drawback at the current stage is that Nintendo may refuse to fix the Wii if it breaks. Now, it won't break unless you're very unlucky or you do something stupid (like stuff not sanctioned in the Wiki).

THe Black Wiis used to come with 4.2. However, if you were to buy one now, there is a chance it could be 4.3.

So I let a friend borrow my wii yesterday so he could play Goldeneye. Today I went to see how he was doing only to find that he had downgraded my wii from 4.3 to 4.1 and put the homebrew channel on it. There was also some backup channel some Gamecube channel and some USB channel. I don't know anything about how this stuff works but he told me I can't use the shop channel anymore or it crashes the system. He also told me the SD card has to be out of the system before turning it on or off or it could screw something up. I'm just hoping he didn't screw something up. If everything is fine I guess I've involuntarily Joined the Homebrew club.

The SD card thing is bullshit. keep it in. Also, there are ways to visit the wii shop channel, you'll still be able to buy games.

And you may have the best mate ever. :lol

No, he doesn't. Downgrading is unnecessary and just plain stupid. Given some of the other crap that has been installed, it sounds like this 'friend' has also installed cIOScorp or some other sort of crap.

Kard8p3, I strongly suggest you follow the steps in the tutorial that you want to be able to do. Especially, update the HBC and then perform an official 4.3 upgrade via the network. This should be safe and remove most of the rubbish that has been installed on your Wii.

Actually, perhaps it's best to first ask your friend to give us a list of exactly what he installed or which tutorial he followed. We can then let you know how to fix the system so that you're safe from now on and can use the shop again.

Your friend sucks ass. If you install your homebrew properly, you can use the Shop Channel without any problems, you can have the SD card wherever you please and there's no need to downgrade for any reason ever.

Bonjour, fellow homebrewers. :D

I just bought a softmodded Wii from a fellow Gaffer that's in transit to my house but I'm trying to prepare myself for its arrival. (What can I say? I'm excited.)

I'm not sure the firmware, but it's a launch model that's probably 4.0+ but not 4.3. It's got USB Loader and Gecko on it. Now, I've previously owned a Wii that worked perfectly with NeoGamma R7 but it was stolen and so I'm back to square one in a sense.

I don't know what Gecko is, and I've never configured a HDD for USB loading use. Should I stick with HD Loader (GX), or move on to newer programs such as CFG and WiiFlow? How do I format my HDD, and how do I transfer games to said hard drive? Drag and drop the .ISOs?

I'm lost when it comes to USB boot methods and any help/tips/advice would be very much appreciated. :)

You rip the games from the disk to the drive using the Wii. You should start using Cfg rather than GX. GX isn't really supported any more.

Gecko OS is useful for playing import games from the disc.

As for the drive, you should have it formatted as FAT32 or NTFS. FAT32 is a bit easier to work with. Further instructions are available in the tutorial.

When I go back I'll make a list of everything he's put on it. I've read up a bit on Homebrew today and it seems like it's definitely worth having so I want to get everything working right.

Thanks for the speedy reply, sir.

OK, so CFG it is. (I hope it's not hard to install CFG to the Wii home screen.)

I may just buy a new external HDD on the cheap specifically for the Wii, seeing as my current one's formatted to some other format for Mac backups. I was reading about some WBFS format, should I ignore that?

Do you think I'll need to mess around with or install/uninstall any cIOS or anything of that nature?

I would stick with GX if that's what's already set up on your system. GX is actually still under active development, the last revision was only a week ago (the last compiled released is a few months old, but there literally hasn't been any recent games that haven't been compatible).

Installing a cIOS will depend on if you run into compatibility problems, best not to install something unless you actually have to.

How many of the installers etc do I need to have left on the HBC menu after I've installed them?
They take up a lot of space and makes it hard to "manouver".

None. Feel free to dlete any app that you don't need any more.

How do I unhack my wii? Can I just update it? If i do update it, do i just used a disc that has an update on it? thanks in advance.
Why do you want to unhack it? It is virtually impossible to remove all traces of hacks from your Wii. To do so, you would need to carefully delete IOSes and message board logs selectively. Trying to unhack also comes at a high chance of bricking the Wii, whereas there is currently no danger or risk to leaving your Wii hacked. There are ways to safely upgrade to the new firmware and to continue to access the Wii Shop and everything else you'd want to do with your Wii while still remaining hacked.

My friend hacked it for fun, and I honestly have no use for it. I find it aggravating to have to go through the gecko thing everytime I want to play a newer game.

edit: would this correct my problem?
http://gwht.wikidot.com/upgrade

If i update it through official means, won't it just remove the hacks?

Well, there's a few alternatives to Gecko. You can either safely upgrade to firmware 4.3 or perform the steps to avoid disc updates.

Both are safer than trying to unhack. Do the first option if you don't want to use a USB Loader. Do the second if you still want to have the option. Just make sure you upgrade the HBC first with either technique and you won't have any problems.

Could I just back up my game saves to an sd card, then format my wii's system memory? I've never downloaded any VC games or anything, so other than my ssbb save, I wouldn't be losing anything.

The format doesn't delete homebrew. There are other saves which also might be uncopiable apart from SSBB too.

Alright I've been very busy these last few days so I haven't had a chance to go back to check on my wii but I did call him up tonight. For some reason he wanted to avoid telling me what he put on there besides the homebrew channel but eventually I did get him to tell me he put something called neogamma on it.

Random post, but I think it deserves the love.

Probably the most seamlessly installing polished pieces of homebrew I've ever used on anything. Pretty much the XBMC of the Wii. Let's you do just about every media related task the Wii is capable of and has a damn slick interface

The last version available to download from their site is from April. To anyone who doesn't compile their own code, that is a dead piece of software. If you are compiling your own, feel free to share with everyone or shut up about how active the development is.

And it's not about game compatibility so much as the use of NTFS or FAT32 actually working so people don't have to go through the hassle of WBFS anymore.

There are a lot of saves which you cannot copy off or back onto your Wii without homebrew. Blame Nintendo.

There's no danger to NeoGamma, so that's good. Unfortunately, it isn't enough information.

I guess the only really dangerous stuff he could have done was CIOSCorp or DarkCorp (they are essentially the same thing). Can you see if either of those seem familiar to him? Also, check whether he installed something called Preloader or Priiloader. While not dangerous, and easy to remove, having Priiloader might change our correction technique.

:lol Holy shit dat rage :lol Did you read my post? There isn't a single thing I already qualify that you aren't trying to make a point of. Don't worry, we both agree; April is a month that is months ago. If it's literally only about hassle and he already has GX, he should stick with it because that's inherently less of a hassle. It supports NTFS/FAT32

What's the latest on Dios Mios? I'm hoping to travel unusually light to my parents' this Christmas, and it'd be great to bring my entire Wii *and* GC collection with me!

Would be nice to finally get around to playing Tales of Symphonia, too.

USB Loader GX has been getting kinda buggy for me, so I think i'm going to switch back to CFG. Only thing is I need to make it childproof (don't need to hear "I think i messed it up!" every 5 minutes). Is there a way to "lock" viewpoints (without adjusting it with the dpad)? Basically I want select your game > press A. Nothing else.

It's only in alpha. Doesn't look like anything really works yet in the public release. http://wiki.gbatemp.net/wiki/DIOS_MIOS_Compatibility_List

Hmm... after studying the compatability list a little it seems most of the nonworking games were PAL, and most of the NTSC games tested do work albeit with issues. I still wouldn't get your hopes up about being able to play too many of your games yet, though.

This would be so helpful. I found the display style I want, I don't want to accidentally change it when most of them are useless.

To lock the style so that it doesn't change with the d-pad, use the gui_lock=1 option.

Now, that just stops you changing the gui mode, but if you don't want to be able to change to the console-based list view, then also disable the action of the B button and the - button. You can do that with button_-=nothing and button_B=boot_game or some alternate actions according to those options. The suggested ones will make it so that B also launches games and the - button does absolutely nothing. You might also want to use the "random" action for either button that will get Cfg to randomly select a game from all the installed games.

For childproofing, it is also recommended that you use simple=1. That means the kids can't install, delete, format the partition or change options for the game and it also disables the start confirmation screen (so they push A to start the game instead of twice). You could set these options manually via disable_install, disable_remove, disable_format, disable_options and confirm_start, but simple controls them all at once.

It should be noted that although you disabled installation of games, you can still do that via password. By holding the 1 button, a prompt will come up to enter a password. You can change that password, but the default option is unlock_password=BUDAH12 which corresponds to B, Up, Down, A, Home, 1, 2 on the Wiimote. You can set that option to any other combination of up to 10 buttons.

Unlocking the admin lock also allows you to access the "Hide Game" option on the options menu. Hidden games will only be displayed after the password has been entered, meaning you can lock out the games that you don't want your kids playing but can still play them yourself.

For other option information, make sure to check my Configurable Options guide and the Configurator, which has plenty of info on each option both via tooltips and via a help file.

You can't do it on the Wii. However, you can copy directly from one drive to the other using a computer. It's just one copy operation, not two. Instructions for that are here.

what should i choose as filetype; iso, ciso, or wbfs (does cfg [+ using wiiflow actually] read all 3 filetypes)
(formatted to ntfs)
You shouldn't choose anything, but should instead use the wbfs_file app that is discussed in the tutorial page I linked earlier to transfer from the WBFS drive to a FAT32 or NTFS partition. It will name all the files appropriately for you, unlike other apps.

I need a bit of assistance updating the WiiShop channel... According to the WiiSystem Settings menu, I'm on 4.1U, though I swear I updated to 4.2.

I followed the instructions to download and install Ios236 (http://gwht.wikidot.com/ios236), which installed without a hitch.

after that I did the steps required here: http://gwht.wikidot.com/hermes-ios222-223 and it finished with no problem.

Finally, I installed and ran Marc's DOP-Shop: http://gwht.wikidot.com/wii-shop. With this, the system stated that it couldn't install when I selected 222 (restarted and still no luck), so I selected 223 and that worked. I know I should have asked first but it finished successfully...

However when I try now to enter the WiiShop channel I get a blue-screen with Error 200 - Remove discs, turn off your console contact support, etc message.

Should I try again using method #2 on http://gwht.wikidot.com/wii-shop page? Or do I need to do somethign else to fix this?

Yes, try again with the other method.

Yes, but if you run Epic Mickey, it will replace 249 again. All updates since 4.2 have done this and we've known about it for some time. If you want to have both 249 for USB Loading and disc-based play on the same system, you must perform steps to avoid disc updates.

Then again, now that I think about it, we now can have both without StartPatch, at least until 4.4 comes out. This relies on the fact that new forwarders and the HBC allow you to use meta.xml for arguments to Cfg and that we have access to slots that have not yet been stubbed.

Thus, you can use the 249 installer to install into the 247 or 248 slot instead of 249. Use meta.xml arguments (supported by the latest Configurator to help you generate it) to set ios=247 or ios=248 and then you'll still be able to load Cfg, while still being up to date according to the 4.2 and 4.3 update checks. This will work until 4.4 comes along, as it will probably stub the 247 and 248 slots, but then we could just use other slots unless Nintendo stubs them all.

Thanks for your divine help on everything!

I'm thinking of buying an new HDD for my Wii that is formatted to NTSF (or is FAT preferred).
I have a WBFS at the moment.
Do I have to use Configurable USB Loader or does it work with GX as well?

Do any of you have any tips on 2.5" HDDs that work well, and won't power down/go idle after a while?

I strongly recommend Cfg, it's easier to get running at a better compatibility level than GX in its current state.

As for NTFS or FAT, FAT32 is easier to get working, but NTFS is slightly more useful if you want to be able to store large files (there is no need for large file storage for Wii-related stuff, though).

As for drive recommendations, I'll have to leave that for others to discuss.

I'm running Cfg right now, and I was wondering if there was any way to quit out of a game and go right back into the game selection screen. Restarting the homebrew channel everytime I want to switch games isn't the biggest inconvenience in the world, but it'd be nice if there were a way, at least.

Yes, there is. Install a forwarder channel and use return_to_channel=ID where ID is the 4-character ID of the channel. E.g., the forwarder channel on the forwarder page of the tutorial is DCFG. I'll soon be updating that page to go to a new forwarder (listed in the first post here) which has the ID UCXF. The only other step when using the new forwarder is to ensure you have IOS58 by either updating to 4.3 or using the IOS58 Installer.

Now, this does come with a catch. You can't use the return_to_channel feature in combination with the write_playlog feature. If you do, only the last game you play will get written to the log, as the feature needs you to return to the Wii Menu between games to work.

I've been searching online for a solution and skimmed through this thread but still haven't found an answer to my issue. I was wondering if it's at all possible to run the homebrew channel off a USB for a one off time so I can rip my Wii games to a HDD (wanna test them on Dolphin). I share my Wii with my brothers and they're not too fond about installing the homebrew channel. I think it'll be easier to convince them to let me rip the games if I can do it one off and not have the actual homebrew channel installed on the Wii.

Otherwise I'll be looking for a new DVD drive!

What would the benefit be of upgrading to the new Forwarder?

I managed to solve my issue, of what appeared to be an HDD spin down issue. If I started CFG on boot (either by forwarder or HBC), it would hang before getting to the loading screen. Only way round it was to mount the USB device in another App first (I would normally just press 1, and choose USB Device in the HBC).

I reverted back to Rev19 of cIOS, and now it's gone back to doing as expected, and had been doing previously - booting up totally fine. Straight from the CFG Forwarder as linked to in the GAF Wiki!

I did a lot of experimenting with the different IOS bases of Rev20, but it didn't work on 36/37/38/56/57, so I made the decision to revert back.

So, i'm wondering what might have caused this? And what benefits am I losing by going with 19 over 20?

The reason I ask about the new Forwarder, is i'm wondering if the inclusion of 58 support will get round the issue above by mounting something prior to CFG load?

You can use the launch methods to run other apps instead of the HBC. However, the disc dumping apps require a custom IOS to be installed, and there is no way to use those without installing something to the Wii. That thing won't be visible to your brothers, but it does sort of defeat the purpose. Hence, yes, you can dump discs without installing the HBC, but you can't dump discs without installing anything at all.

The reason I ask about the new Forwarder, is i'm wondering if the inclusion of 58 support will get round the issue above by mounting something prior to CFG load?
The new forwarder's key benefit is that it supports options via meta.xml, which allows you to change the intro splash image (in a limited fashion) and to launch the loader properly with any IOS.

You aren't really losing anything between rev19 and rev20 except the extra base choices.

It is possible the other forwarder will work for you. The forwarder does have to initialise the drive in case you have the .dol on there, so it might do that task. Another workaround might be to just move your stuff off the SD and onto the USB drive and remove the SD. The HBC will automatically mount the apps on the USB drive if there is no SD plugged in.

Yes, try again with the other method.

I get all the way to step 9, and immediately when I press A get an error:

Code:
Exception (DSI) occurred!
[bunch of HEX]
STACK DUMP:
[more hex]
