GAF Wii Homebrew thread: Homebrew, emulators, USB disc installs! Easy tutorial!

I've noticed a couple of other games that do that (Tatsunoko vs Capcom, Sonic Colors), and it's really annoying. I wonder what the reason is for developers to do that.
I have no clue. It's such a weird decision that I don't think it's intentional.

1) With Mame, how far can I go given the limitations of the Wii? Would I be stuck with Pacman and Galaga or could I push it as far as ChaseHQ? How about Daytona?

I've done admittedly little testing, but I get playable (not smooth, but playable) framerates out of Street Fighter 2 and both TMNT arcade games. You should be fine with Pacman (although there's a dedicated PacMan arcade emulator listed on HBCE that you might want to try too).

You don't have to update the Wii to update the shop. The instructions are to upgrade the shop alone are here.

In terms of safety, it depends what firmware version you are currently on if you intend to update. If you have already updated boot2, then there is virtually no risk whatsoever (apart from the risk of any update, whether you had homebrew or not). If you didn't, then there is a minor risk unless you update boot2 safely first.
I'm currently on firmware version 4.3E. Is it safe to just update the normal way if I'm on that version?

Just thought I'd let people know. In the latest version of Cfg, v66, there is a hidden easter egg. It's a feature that has been requested for a long time and is nearly ready for full release.

Good luck finding it, though :).

Thanks to the awesome op and guide.

I'm brand new to the wii in general, having just picked one up on eBay, firmware 3.1e. I had a couple of questions though.

1) I used bootmii to backup the NAND. Whilst saving, it found a few black (bad) blocks. But the verify went over and everything went green and verified. Should I redo?

2). I used a 2gb sd card for the various installs and the NAND backup. Can I just copy the contents of that card onto a spare 4th now? Or are there hidden system files somewhere in the process?

Cheers!

Can I try guessing the Easter Egg? Is it to maybe go back to HBC with a button press instead of reset the system when exiting the loader? It's pretty much all I can think is missing, the loader seems just about perfect otherwise...

Btw, I'm in Europe and there's been a Nintendo Channel update or something recently, for 3DS content. Can I safely accept to update? I've used the latest guide stuff so I have the cios stuff in the new positions that weren't getting overwritten by past updates. I was on latest official firmware be4 this new update too.

Also, am I the only one who has this issue? I've searched everywhere but can't find a solution. My rips in this portable HDD seem to get corrupt over time so that they hang at random loading points. I haven't had issues with other files on it, like movie files I watch with WiiMC, just the game rips. So I end up having to re-rip the games every so often. It even happens in games I haven't started in a long time. Any ideas?

Bad NAND blocks are normal, as long as there aren't a shitton of them.
Cool, thanks.

Also, regarding the firmware. I'm on 3.1e and I've updated the shop channel to v20. I believe the next thing I should do is the 'update blocker' so NSMB (for example) doesn't auto update.

But is there a compelling reason to change from 3.1? If so is there a version that I *should* be on?

As already stated, bad blocks are indeed normal. You can copy the files directly between SD/SDHC cards, yes.

You've always been able to do that. Just add "home=hbc" or "home=exit" to config.txt.

The Nintendo Channel Update is performed by going to the Wii Shop and downloading the new Nintendo Channel. This doesn't affect the firmware in any way and you should not have a problem.

Are the hangs repeatable, or just at random points? How have you formatted your drive?

The Update FAQ lists a few reasons why you might want to update, such as SD storage. Some games will also require the newer IOSes that Nintendo releases occasionally, so that is another reason. The safe ways to upgrade your firmware are listed on the upgrade page.

If a rip gets borked then it will hang at the same spot every time. But I don't know if after I fix it they bork at the same area again or just random. Monster Hunter Tri hanged when going to Moga Forest, but some other areas worked. Endless Ocean borked going to Ciceros Straight, some other areas worked. No More Heroes 2 hanged midway through the level I was in. Etc.

The hard drive is formatted in NTFS now. I've backed up the rips I made be4 on a hard drive on my PC (using WBFS Manager to take them from the WBFS formatted drive previously) to easily overwrite one when it gets borked. Before I made it NTFS it was WBFS and I had the same issue. I mainly changed to NTFS in case it solved it.

The HDD is a 250GB Transcend Passport.

Thanks for the home button trick. Can't think of anything else missing that people would ask for.

I think there was one a while ago. Forget the name though. I just remember using it to back some of my GC data.

Interesting. I can understand the problem when it was WBFS formatted as that is a known issue for that format type. It shouldn't happen on NTFS drives and I have no idea what's causing it, sorry.

Thanks Clipper :)

Edit: upgrade problem.

I went back to the guide as suggested to upgrade to 4.2. The version of Dop-mii I got is v.15, don't know if that makes a difference?

1) During the install it says "You have AHBPROT. Do you want to use this?" I don't know what that is, so I answered "Continue with the method you chose".

2) After the final confirmation (up, +, - and A) it asks for a location for the boot2v4.wad. I selected SD card as I have no USB inserted, but it can't find it. As this isn't mentioned in the guide, I'm kind of stuck at this point.

EDIT 2

I noticed earlier on that someone else was trying the same thing. The wii is Internet enabled, and other programs work. Dop-mii for some reason doesn't download anything.

So I found boot2v4.wad on the dop-mii site. Should it go In the root of the sd card or within dope-mii in the apps folder? I tried it at the root, dop-mii crashes with an exception the second you select boot2.

Thanks for any help, been driving me mental this afternoon!

Oh... then it's possible the rips that I encountered the issue in were borked before the file system switch and I just hadn't noticed until after that I guess... But all games I play atm are good so if it happens again later then they got borked after the switch to NTFS. I'll let you know then...

Thanks for the info too, I'll update the instructions for the newer versions of Dop-Mii soon. I should actually have the Dop-Mii WiiBrew edition there...

Unfortunately, I'm not sure of the proper location for the wad at this time. The fact that it did something different when you put it at root indicates that might be it.

Ok, after more research the results are in ;)

I have tried the boot2v4.wad in the root of the SD card, in the dop-mii folder and on a USB stick. All of these give a crash with an exception report. As soon as I remove boot2v4.wad from the equation, dop-mii runs to the point of asking for the .wad, SD or USB?

So my question now is, how to do the safe upgrade? I know people have done it, so what method did they get to work, given that dop-mii won't download the files required? Is there an alternative to dop-mii to do the boot2 upgrade part of the firmware upgrade?

It's probably safe to just run the normal Nintendo update code, to be honest.

Hey Clipper, how up on actual wii game programming/hacking stuff are you? I've started on a translation project for Xenoblade:

http://gbatemp.net/t276731-xenoblade-menu-translation

And the character limits are killing me, not to mention the vast amounts of text still undiscovered and the inability to extract and repack it all (save for one file). Interested in helping or know anyone who might be? Give the topic a looksee and feel free to PM me here or on gbatemp.

EDIT: Just to avoid any arguments about the game's fate and whether it'll be localized, I'm mostly doing this for fun in my spare time, but it WOULD be cool to see the results of all the excel files I've translated actually appear in the game :D

Update: success!!

I grabbed v12 of dop-mii (in my defense, the guide does say v12 or later ;) ) and it just worked first time. Boot2v4 installed, I nipped out and bought SMG2 and did the 4.2 update.

(I wanted it anyway, I didn't buy it just for that!)

Job done. Thanks for all the help Clipper :)

I'm on a new Wii version 4.3U.

I modded a Wii back in Septebmer and you needed Indiana Jones or some other game to mod the Wii.

Is that still the case now?

You still need particular games, but the list has expanded. Brawl is probably the easiest one to use. The instructions for all the methods are on the launch page of the tutorial. There's also methods for the other Lego games (Batman and Star Wars), but I haven't added those to the site as of yet.

Just wanted to say thanks to Clipper for working so hard on the tutorial and wiki. Great info, while the steps aren't too hard, I would probably be guessing on some of the options without it.

I finally got around to installing the CFG USB Loader, works great, but I did have a problem with CIOS249 rev 13 (the known problem, I have to turn the Wii off whenever I want to play a different game), and there's a weird thing going on, seems like I can't press "+" during Epic Mickey for some reason, is this a known issue? I'm on travel for work right now so I can't check my disc copy if its doing the same thing, but pressing "+" does nothing...

Why are you using rev 13?

I did it without network installation, I think the instructions on the wiki led me to download that rev. If not, then I don't know why! Its all good though, I was able to update (tethered my android phone to my wii and did network installation, only way to do it in my hotel) my cfg loader and IOSes. Everything works fine though! Thanks so much again, Clipper I've started to fall in love with the Wii again and all the games I had lying there, unplayed!

Still have the problem of not being able to bring up the pause menu on Epic Mickey though. I wonder if I should re-rip it when I get back home next week...

You can use a FAT32 formatted USB drive for anything where it states to use an SD card.

I just installed the Homebrew Channel on a Wii and created a FAT32 USB HDD for it. Could I place my "apps" on the USB HDD and have the HBC display the apps inside it or HBC reads only on SD:\apps?

Within HBC you can select the source of your apps in the settings which appear after pressing the 1 button (this also allows you to see if HBC detects your drive to begin with).

They're out of date if you haven't done anything in a year. Follow the tutorial as if you had a new Wii starting with reinstallation of the HBC.

And if it doesn't, is there a way to force it?

I've gone through the modmii wizard as a virgin wii but when I try to reinstall hbc from the sd card the wii freezes. I'm currently on hbc 1.0.3 I think. Is there a way to update straight from hbc?

If you don't have an SD card inserted, it will default to the hard drive. That's the only way to get it to pick the drive by default, I believe.

If you have your Wii connected to the Internet, then it should update itself. Otherwise, there are steps for updating the HBC from the HBC in the GAF tutorial.

Many thanks for the guide, just went through it last weekend and it was very helpefull.
Spent a good portion of yesterday putting around half of my collection (21 out of 40~50 games) in my HDD.
Soon I won't be bothered by DVD's any longer!

Anyway a few questions.
I'll be getting my new PC pretty soon so I was looking into the Dolphin thread and it got me pretty interested in playing some GC games with it, but I can't seen to find any way to rip my GC games to my HDD, is there any way to do that?

Also I'm a bit confused about the meaning of the note on this page:
http://gwht.wikidot.com/forwarder
Plus the link to the megaupload of "Waninkoko's Wad Manager v1.7" seems to be dead.

You can't currently rip Gamecube games with Cfg. You'll need one of the other disc ripper apps.

How are you confused? Also, I added an alternative link which should hopefully be more stable.

I just didn't understand the significant of "UCXF", but I followed the guide and the fowarder is working now, thanks.

The ID is only important if you want to use the return_to_channel option in Cfg.

I haven't used the wiimotes since my sister used them with a different wii a few weeks ago =/

Success

You either have to use a GC controller or the buttons on the front of the Wii.

Ah ok.

Another minor thing, I have the write_playlog at 1, and it works fine for games, but each time I enter Cfg it adds a new entry of Cfg to the playlog of the day instead of adding on the already existing one.

Any way to fix this or disable the Cfg from appearing in the playlog?

A new clue has been given about Cfg's current Easter Egg feature. Rather than subjecting you to the Youtube video that oggzee put out on the GBATemp forums, I'll just post it in text form instead...

Konami code

This should only happen if you enter Cfg and then quit it without launching a game. There is currently no way to stop this from happening if you do that. Is that what is happening?

I just got my Wii back up to homebrew tip top shape with Mod Mii with all the IOSes and apps. And just to make quintuple sure I can browse the shop channel and buy games correct?

Yeah, that's what happened. I tried it again afterwards and it worked fine, didn't realize that's what had happened.

Thanks for the help, been playing my Wii games a lot more now that they're just a couple clicks away.

I haven't used my wii in a long time and I'm now finding the system wants to update in order to get netflix on it. I'd rather not go through everything needed to get it all working with homebrew in place, etc. Is there any info on how to undo everything and get the wii back to it's default state? I did some poking around and couldn't find anything. Thanks!

No, you can't get it back to default, but homebrew adds no danger whatsoever to the update so just go ahead. However, if you have an older Wii, it is safer to update by the boot2v4 homebrew method whether you have already installed homebrew or not.

Hmm, maybe that would be a nice point to add to the OT. I tried to update, but continually get an error. I've tried switching channels on my router as suggested by various online sources, but to no avail. So I'm not really sure where to go from here. I would like to just flat out update the Wii without the hassles of loading anything to an SD card or modifying the wii further.

If you can't get it working via the online method, then I suggest you get or rent a recent game and use that to update your Wii.
