GAF Wii Homebrew thread: Homebrew, emulators, USB disc installs! Easy tutorial!

I assume the sharks with lasers warning I saw yesterday was an April Fools' joke? :lol

I hope so, at least. I thought my Wii was borked or something. Haha.

Yes. Incidentally, did you notice the changes in the GUI too? We also made the Easter Egg unlock automatically on April Fools whereas typically you have to
enter the Konami code
.

Where exactly do you
do the code? Just anywhere?

Nice prank, heh.

Nope, I didn't notice any changes but that's because CFG loads in 3D coverflow so I rarely notice the GUI. Now I need to try to remember the Konami code...

Look at the tutorial and didn't find the answer to my question:

If I install USB Loader and rip the games to my external HD, can I then use that on my PC and play games with Dolphin?

I'm having a hard time tracking down a drive that will rip straight to my PC. :(

Yeah, but they need to be in .iso format to use with Dolphin. If your drive is FAT32 you can have CUSB dump them as .wbfs and then use a program on your PC called WBFS file to convert them back to .iso.

EDIT - Oh, you want to use the files on the same drive that you're dumping them on? I don't know if you can do that, the drive would have to be in a 64 bit file format that could be read by both your PC and CUSB.

Uhhh, not necessarily, copying them to my HDD is fine.

So install USB
Rip game to external.
copy from external to HDD
convert.

This should work?

Sorry for being so dense here :p

Yeah, that's exactly what I do. When you said "use that on my PC", I thought by "that" you were referring to the external HDD.

If the drive is formatted as NTFS, you can also add the option:

install_partitions=iso

to config.txt and Cfg will rip them directly to .iso format so that you can use the same files with both Cfg and Dolphin.

Note that you will also need:

ntfs_write=1

in order to write to the NTFS drive.

Heck yeah. I did it! I ripped the games that I own on a 500gigbyte HD, via the smash brawl hack. Just for Xenoblade, in case it doesn't get an NA annoucement. Still worth it, now I don't have to run the Wii drive anymore and less stress on the system.

Oh! First time I've seen this thread bumped since I've been a junior member. Just wanted to thank all the people who put this together. I have no experience hacking anything but I got this all done in maybe 15 minutes with no trouble whatsoever. And it's all thanks to these wonderful tutorials!

I did it for the sole purpose of getting classic controller support for DKCR and didn't regret it. I wouldn't hesitate to use it again if Xenoblade never makes it to NA, though.

Bah, so I just read this in the FAQ:

Can I install my GameCube games to the drive and play them?

* There is currently no way to install Gamecube games. Only retail Wii games will work.

Very disappointing, as I was actually looking to rip some GC games. There's no other option to get these on a drive other than to use the compatible disc drives that will read the discs?

No, you can still install GC games onto your drive using another program such as CleanRIP and use them with Dolphin, you just won't be able to load them on your Wii.

Do you still need the Netflix disc to use & install on the Wii? Also if I havent used or updated my Wii in months what will I need to do to get Netflix working?

Netflix is now a channel you download from the Wii shop. The disc doesn't even work any more as far as I know, just tells you to go download the channel.

Excellent. Thanks for the help/quick answers today!

I dont know what fw i am on but if I update the fw will I lose access to the homebrew channel and the like?

Edit: Apparently I am not on the latest fw. Is the latest fw easily hackable?

Okay, so I installed 249 rev20 in slots 248/247 and 222/223 in slot 224. Configurable says that 249 isn't installed, even though I added the appropriate argument to sd:/apps/Usb-loader/meta.xml

Edit: nevermind, I broke the </arguments> tag by accident. All good now.

This is a random question, inspired by all the trepidation regarding NoA's decision to translate or not games. When I first installed the homebrew channel a while ago (or something related to the homebrew channel, probably the usb loader), the installer asked me a question to the tune of 'are you going to use this for pirated games as well, or only to install your own games on disk?'. As a shining beacon of honesty (:)), I chose the second option. But I was wondering - if there was a fan translation I was interested in (for instance, I might import Fatal Frame 4), can you patch the game without having activated that piracy option or whatever?

Hopefully NoA will decide to bring Last Story and Xenoblade over so that my question is moot.

I'm surprised how many people this tricks on both sides of the argument. Having written that app, I can tell you exactly what that option does. If you pick the piracy option, it undoes what it just did, deleting IOS236 from your Wii and then chastises you for being a pirate. If you try to immediately rerun the app, it remembers your previous response and chastises you even further for attempting such a thing.

Even if you turn the Wii off and then back on, it remembers how many times you have tried to run it and refuses to do anything else. It also stalls your Wii for a longer period each time before returning to the HBC. It is rather easy to fool the app, but I do enjoy the occasional heated private message or post on the GWHT forums from some stupid pirate who was too stupid to figure it out.

Without thinking I accidentally updated the official Wii firmware when I was testing the internet connection for my Wii. Noticed that CFG USB Loader didn't load, so I looked around the Wiki as usual and thought I had solved all the stuffs (did the meta.xml thingy as well).

However, upon trying to actually start a game (Xenoblade in this case), I kept getting the "Custom IOS 249 is a stub! Please reinstall it." message even though I already did all the previous requirements. When I tried to start Wii Sports, I got this following message

[+] Booting Wii game, please wait...

IOS(249).
[+]ERROR:
Custom IOS 249 could not be loaded! (ret = -6)

After that the Wii freezes so I have to do a hard reset in order to restart it. I've tried to search around for possible solutions (maybe I haven't searched good enough), but couldn't find anything that was similar to the problem I am having right now. Is there something I forgot to look into?

EDIT: Uh wow, guess I just had to change the IOS in "Option" for games from 249 to 248....now I feel stupid. >_>

Yeah, you must have previously saved settings for that game while it was set to 249.

i've had hombrew setup on my wii for over a year now, great stuff, but im just wondering, as i live in the uk and will be moving to canada soon, since the voltage is obviously different, will buying this universal power cable be ok?

American adapters for most modern electronics are set up to work with ~100 V - ~240 V. Are you sure yours isn't the same? Check the brick.

However, not having to use a plug adapter might be worth the 8 bucks. Yeah, that will work in US / Canada.

It's just so goddamn tempting. I used the program recently, and even though I already knew that it was a boobytrap, I felt like this:

You must be Mr. Resetti's star pupil!

So I dug up my Wii after not playing for over a year (no joke). Since I finally have broadband again, I got the Wii online and figured I would update everything online (I had always upgraded manually before). My homebrew install is ancient, and rather than reading up on current events I just tried blindly updating everything. Oops. Black screen on boot up. Thinking I had bricked the Wii I started fooling around with the SD card and got a green screen on boot up. Erhm. Time to actually read up on everything again. Anyway, I got it all sorted by manually reinstalling the HBC, Bootmii, etc. Thanks for the guide everyone that contributed. Certainly saved me a lot of headache today.

This is making me dread seeing what I have to do to get my PSP up to date (just got Tactics Ogre the other day). Same situation the homebrew install on it is ancient because I rarely use it.

I have a really old homebrew channel and I want to uninstall everything so i can get netflix going. Can I just delete the channels and upgrade my Wii firmware or do I have to do something else?

I started getting an error on my Wii that says "The system files are corrupted". 90% of the time, my Wii won't boot up.

I do have a theme installed (DarkWii), but it's been installed for, like, two years. I haven't done anything mod-wise with my Wii for at least a year, and this problem just cropped up out of nowhere.

Any ideas?

Even if you don't want it any more, the safest way to upgrade is to upgrade the homebrew stuff first and then upgrade the Wii normally. The HBC is the only really important thing to keep, so just follow those steps and then upgrade.

Remove the theme and do a firmware upgrade.

Hey guys.

I've successfully installed the Homebrew Channel with the LEGO Batman exploit. What to do next?

I'm looking at the whole cIOS thing but it leave me confused.

Has anyone made a YouTube application for Wii? Going to YouTube XL from the browser is too much for little old Wii, it just goes so slow and the frame rate suffers in videos, especially if you view them fullscreen. Viewing YouTube videos via WiiMC however shows that the system can handle the videos themselves OK, even in fullscreen. But searching for stuff isn't very intuitive on WiiMC so if there's a dedicated application that mimics the YouTube site layout in its sorting and search functions, that'd be awesome.

I just installed all that homebrew stuff and the USB loader, because judging from the sound my DVD drive started to make I don't think it would've lived much longer under normal conditions.
Now with the USB loader installed my DVD drive is relieved and my Wii is amazingly quiet, too. It's pretty awesome. :3

/edit/ Also thanks to everyone who did the Wiki. It's more or less foolproof I'd say.

/edit2/ And everything is loading so fast. It's magical. :0

Depends on what you've installed really. The homebrew channel and bootmii have removal options, I think. As for cIOS, IOS249 will be stubbed if you run a firmware update/run an update off a recent disc but other slots will stay.

If you're terrified because you're taking your Wii in for repair, don't be. We took our Wii into a Nintendo Repair Facility with Homebrew just sitting on the Wii Menu, and they didn't care.

Finally got my ass in gear and converted my wbfs drive to FAT32. Was actually painless to do, though I left it as FAT32 instead of NTFS because I wanted to use it for homebrew as well.

Can I force all of the apps to load from the USB drive instead of the SD card? I imagine it should be as simple as copying the folder(s) to the USB drive and HBC will find it all itself, but would it break anything?

Most things work fine off the hard drive, so go ahead. Only really old apps would fail.

I've been having some freezing up problems with CFG USB loader - games and even the usb menu seem to hang every now and then - I'm using a 500gb portable WD hard drive currently - for example was playing SMG2 and while I was in a level noticed that the music suddenly went away, I could keep playing the level just fine but as soon as I exited the thing crashed. Should I just get another hard drive and transfer my data onto it,and if so whats the best one to try?

That sounds like spindown. Try other IOSes and see if they handle your drive better. Also, I think WD drives have a tool you can use to disable spindown, so search for that in Google.

Also, make sure you have everything upgraded.
