GAF Wii Homebrew thread: Homebrew, emulators, USB disc installs! Easy tutorial!

Alright I have a homebrew wii and the firmware is listed at 4.3U but when I put in DK country returns it says system update on the channel. I just got my copy of Go Vacation and it says the same thing. Am I out of date? Can I ignore the message or play on the homebrew channel instead?

Hmm, I'm not sure. I totally forgot about that issue. I think it's not a problem any more. Can somebody please confirm?

What was the issue, exactly?
I can test things out this weekend, perhaps, but I'm not sure what to look for...

This likely means you have IOS249 installed or something. Make sure you have d2x installed in the 248 slot and then update your Wii once. You should retain access to all your homebrew (provided it accepts the 248 slot for cIOS) and discs will no longer ask to update.

Just see if the latest versions of d2x work or not. Install one and check if you can play any chosen game for 5 minutes or so.

Hi guys. I'm new to all of this and was looking to backup my games to a harddrive. I've read the wiki (great work Clipper) and think I'm ready to do it but just had a quick question. Will a 3.0 usb hard drive work with the wii or should I source a usb 2.0 hd. I have a launch wii if that helps. Thanks in advance.

If I format my Wii, do I loose all the homebrew stuff?

And can I save my save files by putting them on a SD Card?

There is a lower compatibility rate with USB 3.0 drives, but most do work. Avoid anything with a connected hub, though.

I'm not sure of the format. I know it won't delete the IOSes, but I forget whether it deletes channels or not. I think it might actually keep them too.

Not all of the saves can be copied by default, but there are some homebrew apps you can use to allow you to copy those games too. StartPatch is one option. Savegame Manager is also an older app that may help, but I think there's a newer, better one but can't remember the name.

The thing is I WANT to get rid of my homebrew stuff (and I only have the homebrew channel installed).

I'm not doing anything with it and Skyward Sword is coming in a month (which I'm pretty sure will have a mandatory update.)

Why bother? There's no need to delete it. Even if the HBC has a new update, the worst it would do is delete the current HBC (and then they'll just release a new one). If you really want to, there's an option in the installer to delete the HBC, but there truly is no point.

I'm trying to rip Xenoblade to my HDD using CFG, and the rip freezes at ~65% every time. Any idea why this might be?

After updating cfg to v70 and 247/248 to d2x v2.2 (using 248 for cfg) I'm getting a heavily red-tinted screen (which I normally get in NTSC/NTSC-J games when not forcing PAL 60) and the Wiimote can't seem to connect anymore. Am I missing something?

Edit: Seems to work fine with the older, not yet stubbed 249...

NAND backups can only be restored to the Wii where they came from and it wouldn't work if i tried to restore it to a different Wii, right? (just to be sure before i try something stupid)

That is quite strange. I can't think what might be causing it. What setting do you have your Wii set to?

Correct, although NAND emulation would allow you to use a backup from a different Wii I believe (I'm not sure on this, though).

Tried it with 247, exactly the same issue. I have a release Wii, set to PAL 50. I usually prefer the higher PAL resolution over the higher NTSC frequency. Guess I'll need to stick with Hermes 224 for now for starting cfg instead using d2x. (Edit: The cfg clock is also 3 hours ahead of the one on the Wii menu with d2x, funky...)

Okay, so I managed to make WBFS Backups on my computer. Now I have a split hard drive, one with a small 100 GB Fat 32 Partition and the 200 GB WBFS partition. What's the best way to merge the partitions back to one big Fat32 partition?

If what you mean is that you've already taken all the games off the WBFS partition, just use any partition manager (not the Windows system, as it won't allow it) to delete the WBFS partition and then expand the FAT32 partition to fill the drive. I have an old tutorial page for GParted, but Easeus is also free and really easy to use.

What are some good brands of DVD-Rs to make backups with? I lent my Little King's Story out a year ago or so and never got it back from my friend before she moved, so I want to make a copy of it. I think the DVD-Rs I got are too shitty, though. They're memorex and only seem to write at 6x speed. Is that a DVD problem or a burner issue (not too familiar with this hardware)?

I recommend against them entirely. They are known to kill your Wii laser after a while. Stick to retail games and perhaps try to ask your friend to post the game back to you. If there is absolutely no way to contact her, I guess you could rent the game and then back it up to hard drive if you can find it and morally accept it.

I know I couldn't accept it, though. I've lost a few games (I think stolen by a friend who was visiting, but I can't be sure), and I even went to the point of deleting them from my drive as it didn't feel right to keep playing them. Still, it lead to me getting a superior replacement version of Metroid Prime Trilogy (Original was PAL, but I found it 'used' but looking brand new with slip cover, intact CN code and everything on a trip over to the States), so I don't feel too bad for my loss. Still haven't replaced NSMB, though. I just can't find a good deal on it.

I know feelings on this matter vary from each person but isn´t that the point of self made copies, to be personal backups? If your game gets scratched to the point of malfunction, if it was lost or even stolen like in your case, those I believe are pretty valid scenarios for keep using your previously made disc images. You are a paying customer and in the end the developers already received money from you for the game, so I don´t see harm done.

Yeah, my moral issues are set pretty high (and almost definitely too high) on the matter, I agree. I wouldn't have had a problem if I knew the discs were scratched or I knew how they had been lost. Even though it's not my fault, I feel that if they were stolen, then playing the backups I made previously makes it like I have duplicated the game as opposed to format shifting, so I just prefer to live without any of that guilt. I certainly don't expect others to act the same way, it is just the way I choose.

I can certainly understand your point of view and in no way I was trying to make you change your stance. I just think that since you are a legitimate customer you are unnecessarily holding yourself to exceedingly high ethical standards on this subject, but I respect that.

Okay so i have the latest EU firmware on my Wii and im thinking of putting this disc thing on so i can just rip my games to an external hard drive as the disc drive is on its last legs and is making the LOUDEST whirring sound ever when it plays a disc and does my nut in.

Is it still possible to get homebrew on the latest firmware? if so, is there a basic step by step guide to do it, im talking really basic as im not very good at this sort of thing! ):

Edit: Okay, im using this basic tutorial i found on the main page. Im hoping it works! Seems simple enough for even me! (:

By the main page, I hope you mean the second post of this thread. If not, then use this tutorial:

Quick question guys. Should I go for the v3.1 of the d2x or use the old v2.2?

I know the answer is probably going to be: "Choose whatever you like" but just to be sure if I should choose the new version. Thanks in advance!

The guide says that 3.0 is not recommended. Not sure about 3.1, but why not use 2.2 that works according to the guide?

Yep, I followed the same line of though and eventually installed the v2.2. I asked because maybe someone had installed a v3.1 and had no problems. Anywho, thanks for the response :D

Thanks, Easus really worked like a charm. I was easily able to reformat the former WBFS partition and join it together with the existing FAT partition without losing the files that were already on it. Thanks again.

I've searched, checked the past few pages of this thread, and read the wiki, but didn't find an answer:

Are there any differences with new Wii models out now (like this one: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B005QWYKOE/?tag=neogaf0e-20) as far as hacking the unit is concerned? The Wiki seems to imply that there isn't, though there isn't any explicit mention of these models, as far as I saw.

Those new ones are very new and I haven't seen any tests involving them yet. I doubt there'd be a problem.

Thanks for the response. I managed to find a MK Wii bundle, so no worries anyway.

Does the update on the Kirby's Return to Dream Land disc (NA) do anything to homebrew, or can I just install it safely? I can't find anything about this update on the internet except for one confusing GameFAQs topic.

I'm on 4.3 right now.

Wiibrew.org usually updates with a warning if there's a bad update. My guess is that it's harmless.

Hey guys, I posted a while back about my broken Wii drive and Nintendo trying to charge me £129 for a fix, well I decided to go ahead and do the fix by my self, got a diskdrive off ebay and the triwing screws for about £30.

Now my Wii plays Xenoblade and duel layer disks fine and doesn't sound like a lawnmower, i'm feeling all chuffed with my self.

Having a problem installing NSMBW to my harddrive. It installs fine up till about 95% and then gives me a lot of error (2) messages till 100%. Then when I go to play it, it freezes. I had the exact same problem with Pikmin 2. Every other game i've installed is fine though and I re-installed DKCR to test and that was fine. Anyone know of a fix?

EDIT: Hmm, looks like it won't boot from the disc either so i'm guessing that's the problem. Bah, time to get my money back.

I've had the Homebrew Channel installed on my Wii for a few months now and never really did anything with it. But I'm moving into an apartment soon, and would rather not have to bring all my games with me, so I'm planning on installing Configurable USB Loader.

Before I buy an external hard drive, I'm wondering whether there are any downsides to using a portable USB powered drive instead of a self-powered one.

There are differences, but there are some of each type that don't work for different reasons. If you keep your Wii switched fully off (red LED) rather than in standby (orange LED), then a USB-powered device would be better (it helps to avoid spindown as the Wii will power up the drive when it switches on). Otherwise, a self-powered device might be best.

Though the whole bit with self-powered USB-HDDs and Windows 7 has left me wondering.. :\

Basically, even by using 'Safely Remove Hardware', the HDD continues on/spinning. So the only options to fully turn it off; to actually remove it safely are:
-Put the computer to Sleep
-Shutdown that specific USB-port on device manager
-Shutdown the computer

Wonder if that had some effect on the HDD I was using earlier (over a year ago); but that one also lasted a few years and went through a lot before I used it for the Wii.

The new-ish HDD I 'Safely Removed it" form the PC like 3 times, before looking around and reading about that. So now I feel bad for those times I did "that" and am really cautious now. :p

Thanks Clipper! I ordered a 320GB Seagate portable hard drive from Amazon today. I have 30 Wii games, so I figure that will be more than enough space.

Question. I have an HD loader for the games I own. I'm using Wiiflow. Is there any way to adjust the width of a game? I see it can for the program itself, but don't see it in the game options. Some games don't fit the entire screen, and I hate black boarders around the screen. I have a size button on my remote, but it just zooms in whats showing in the black border.

I'll warn you now that you are very close to fitting a very infamous GAF thread, so be careful or you will get lolled at...

OK, so now that's out of the way, what type of borders are you talking about? On the side or top and bottom? And how wide are we talking? Is the Wii set to Widescreen in the Wii options? Do the games that do fit and don't fit look stretched or squished at all? Do you have a "Picture Mode", "Picture Size" or "Aspect Ratio" button on your remote or in the TV's menu? What type of TV is it and what type of cables are you using?

If the game itself doesn't offer such settings you'll need to look into your TV settings (look for overscan, just scan or whatever it's called in your brand of TV). Picture sizes can't be changed after the fact if the game's not programmed to offer that (and most aren't).

Edit: Haha

Uh, its definitely not the sides of my TV. Look at the picture. Its on the sides. I'm using component cables. As I said, when I use the picture button on my TV button it will just zoom in the screen. I guess I can take a picture of that too. Samsung 720P 32" Do you need the model # too?

The wide fit on my options is greyed out for my Wii. Hard to tell, but you can see the black border before you can see the side of my TV itself. So, you can't force a game 16x9?

Picture802-1.jpg

Picture805.jpg

Such black borders are normal. As they are often hidden/hideable due to overscan developers leave them blank thus saving the processing of those screen areas for whatever else they want to use the computing/rendering performance for. If your TV can't "zoom in" to hide it (or you don't want to do that) you'll have to live with it (or complain directly to the developer, some like Nintendo never seem to use that trick).
