GAF Wii Homebrew thread: Homebrew, emulators, USB disc installs! Easy tutorial!

That sucks. I don't see anything about overscan in my TV options.

Yeah, it's unfortunately not a feature of every TV, even if you unlock its diagnostic mode.

Mine doesn't do it either.

Here's the best set of things I can recommend:

  1. Set the TV picture size on that menu you took the picture on to 16:9
  2. Ensure the Wii Screen Type/TV Resolution is set to 480p (I think this might be called "EDTV or HDTV (480p)" on US consoles)
  3. Ensure the Wii's Widescreen Setting is set to 16:9

From then on, any extra black you get is actually encoded into the game. The game may have an option to allow screen adjustment to fix this, but otherwise, you just have to deal with it.

Clipper, is there anything that needs to be done to play Skyward Sword if I haven't updated my Wii in a while? I don't know what firmware its on but I was able to play Metroid Other M, Michael Jackson dance, etc.

I hadn't used my Wii in over a year.

I just went through the tutorial and set up IOS236, d2x and CFG 70.

I used IOS 249 previously.

Am I set for Skyward Sword? Can I use the retail disc to play the game with no problems?

OK, can someone help me out here? I've got homebrew running on the Wii, and it's on System firmare 4.3u. Tonight, I wanted to play some Galaxy 2, but when I put in the disc, it gave me a prompt asking that I update my firmware off the disc? Isn't 4.3u the latest firmware? Should I update from the disc? I've had the game for a while, but I can't remember if I played the game after I put homebrew on the Wii. Thanks.

Is there anything new included on the Skyward Sword DVD or changes in the past, um, year?

I plan on just installing the DVD to the Hard Drive and playing it off that. Any issues with going about it that way?

If you followed the tutorial (i.e. not using 249/222 anymore) and have the homebrew channel up to date you can safely apply the disk update. It won't increase the version number, but it will update a couple ios and stub at least cios 249 (which you don't use anyway if you followed the tutorial).

Thanks for the help man.

BTW, what is the latest cios that we should be using. I want to make sure I have them, as my Wii has been collecting dust for a while.

d2x v2.2 for the slots 247 & 248 and Hermes v5.1 for 223 & 224. d2x doesn't seem to play nice with cfg usb loader on my Wii so I use Hermes for everything atm.

So I'm trying to do this homebrew business, but it's not working! How long does it usually take when you open the letter for the Wii to be accessible again?

On Skyward Sword, don't ask questions until the game has actually released, guys. If you want to be prepared, just run through the tutorial again to update everything.

It's almost immediate. Do a hard reset on the Wii (hold power button down) to switch it off and try opening the letter again.

Thanks, I figured out what i did wrong and I got everything working now :)

I'm still on firmware 4.2U. Is there any reason for me to upgrade to 4.3, and is there anything I need to do to protect my homebrew installs beforehand?
There's no good reason to upgrade, but it is safe to do so. Tp protect your homebrew installs, just go through and update everything to the current versions the tutorial recommends. They aren't deleted by any of the current updates.

Okay I am trying to install the USB loader.

I downloaded Configurable USB Loader v70. I extracted the files and copied them to my SD card sd:/.

However, I do not see a sd:/usb-loader or sd:/apps/USBLoade folders as the steps say I would.

What did I do wrong?

You're not meant to extract the zip directly. There's a sub-directory within the zip file called 'Cfg_USB_Loader70/inSDRoot' where you will find the two directories you need to copy into the SD root.

Hey guys, I just got a Wii and I'm loving it so far, reminds me of my childhood ^_^

Anyways, I all I really would want out of this homebrew stuff is to be able to play some S/NES games and stuff like that. Do they run good? I don't know if there's anything else cool to do with this, I read through the OP but didn't really find anything that interesting. Plus my Wii is 4.3U so I don't know if it's even possible. Got the Mario Kart bundle.

You'll be fine. The guide and info you need is in the second post of the thread, but here it is again anyway as it's been a while:

As for the emulation you want to do, some of the better emulators can be found using the homebrew browser, which there are instructions for in the tutorial.

Also, does it happen to be a PAL Wii? If so, I'd be happy to perform the ambassador process with you to get the free 500 points each on the store. If US, then never mind as it's not available to US Wiis.

Small question..
I've followed the tutorial, everything went fine, i have my Gecko running, which is all I wanted.. but when I load I always go to the bootmii menu. I've changed the .ini to HBC, but still goes always to bootmii.
I know I can rename the bootmi folder so it goes straight to the wiimenu, but I'd like to go to HBC to load gecko...

Any suggestion?

There are instructions that tell you how to get BootMii to automatically launch the HBC on the BootMii page.

Dire question, guys.

I modded my Wii a while back (about two years ago) and everything was fine and dandy, until I tried to update my IOS today. (Keep in mind the last time I messed around with my Wii was a while ago, so I was a bit rusty on everything). I ended up not being able to load from my USB loader GX (I run my backed up games off a HDD). Since that happened, I figured I'd just go to my backup in BootMii (cycling through it to the gear button --> hitting the red arrow) and when I tried to recover via that method, my Wii then got black screened. I can access BootMii when I turn on my Wii, however when I try to access the homebrew channel or or the Wii main menu, I get black screened. Is there anything I could do to get things fixed? It seems everything bad started happening after I tried to restore via the aforementioned method. At least when USB loader didn't work, I could access HBC and the Wii main menu. If anyone would be able to help, either by PM or here, I'd be REALLY appreciative. I have Zelda pre-ordered and if I don't fix this by Zelda time when my brother comes home from college during Thanksgiving weekend, it'll really suck. Thanks so much in advance.

Perhaps the restore didn't take. Try it again.

If that fails, you can try to use BootMii to run Dop-Mii (you can navigate to and launch .dols within BootMii) and update all your Nintendo IOSes to their latest versions without any patches. If that doesn't work either, then it sounds like your hard drive might be dead or corrupt, and unless you have another backup of your own Wii somewhere, there's not really anything you can do.

I guess you could also try using BootMii to run the HBC Installer, though. If you get that going, it might allow you to launch the HBC directly, which could then be used to launch loaders to play games from and stuff.

I've tried the restore quite a few times. I still have the nand file backed up on my computer, tried replacing it, still no-go.

Sorry for the newbie questions. Where in boot-mii can I run this "dop-mii"?

The second alternative seems a bit easier, but where would the HBC Installer be in BootMii? Would that be the SD card icon?

So I recently hacked my own Wii, which was effortless. I'm trying to upgrade my roommate's Wii to the same level and it's been a nightmare.

He was running old apps. I intended to upgrade them all to the highest possible so he can use CFG, but before that I needed to upgrade Homebrew Channel. Well, the HackMii installer refuses to run. "There is no usable or vulnerable IOS installed on this Wii."

It does not matter what HowTo I follow. It does not matter how many IOS' I reinstall (without patches!) using DOP-mii. Whatever my roommate did to his poor, unassuming console in the past has made it absolutely unresponsive to any change I make to it. In the end, I flashed it with his NAND backup, only to find that it had the same issue. I haven't messed with the flashed result much at this point because my will is sapped dry.

I've loaded the HackMii installer through BootMii one last time, and by gum I just have had it. If anyone has any ideas, please offer them, because at this point I'm descending into madness. Before I NAND flashed this thing, I uninstalled every IOS stub, uninstalled everything over IOS80, and upgraded everything that remained to the most recent version, and still the HackMii installer refused to run, giving me that exact same error. I see no reason or logic to this. This is the installer.log for HackMii:

This installer can NOT continue!

There is no usable or vulnerable IOS installed on this Wii.
Please note that we will not use fakesigned IOSes due to
security reasons. Only unpatched versions will be used!

Read the FAQ at: http://hbc.hackmii.com/faq/
Look for an updated version at: http://bootmii.org
If this is already the latest version... well, suck it.

EDIT: I don't have any lines after the installer.log ends, proving that GAF hates me too.

So I finally tried to plug in Skyward Sword and it won't play through CFG via the disc slot. Gives me an error -2. I assume I'll have to update something in order to play through that without having to update my Wii?

I know it hasn't released yet, but I do have a copy, so I figured I'd ask here since folks seem to be knowledgeable.

You would need to put the respective boot.dol or boot.elf files onto the SD card and then use the SD navigation option to select to start those apps. Not all apps like being started this way, though. You would get Dop-Mii from wiibrew.org.

Edit: Oh, I just remembered that the launch page has instructions for launching the HBC Installer via BootMii.

It sounds like he has evil non-Nintendo IOSes installed in the Nintendo slots on the Wii. The easiest way to fix that is to perform a normal Wii upgrade using Nintendo's update code. Using Dop-Mii to upgrade the IOSes to their latest Nintendo versions (it has a technique to upgrade everything, I believe) would also probably work.

It should work unless you are missing a vital IOS. Have you installed IOS58? There's an installer that's used as par of the Cfg Forwarder tutorial that might get it working. Also try installing the disc.

Alternatively, if the disc is from your region, there's no harm in actually updating the Wii with the disc.

EDIT2: I have given up on this Wii since I posted this. If you have any ideas, please post them, but it's not essential.

The first time I tried hacking his Wii I did update it to the newest version (4.3U) and that did not stop HackMii's screaming. So then I reinstalled, using DOP-Mii, by hand, every single IOS that was on the Wii to the most recent available version. I also deleted any IOS with a number over 200.

None of these changed the HackMii's issues. It still gives me the exact same error.

After I restored the NAND backup, I uses DOP-Mii to upgrade every IOS again to the latest version, and then installed System Menu 4.3U through DOP-Mii's menu system. The error message is still there.

I am starting to think this Wii has a hardware issue or was simply hacked to a place beyond my reach. The newest installer.log I have:

It's like nothing will load from BootMii for me. IT always gives me a failure to boot from the .dol file when I try to run it from the SD card option. No installers run either :(.

Can my Wii be bricked even though I see BootMii on start-up every time? I swear, as soon as I tried to "restore" from the NAND file, everything broke for me.

My bad, it will only run .elf binaries, not .dol ones. ANd only specific ones. Did you try the BootMii based instructions on the launch page?

What's bricked is your NAND. If you don't have a valid NAND backup, there might not be anything you can do. However, if the HBC Installer does work, then you will get access back to everything except the Wii Menu, meaning you can do most things still.

Before I try the launch method, is it theoretically possible to obtain a NAND backup from elsewhere and have my wii backup from that one? I guess the backup I have is corrupted because every time i back up from it, when I try to launch from it, I still am black screened.

It is possible to do NAND emulation on a hard drive using the backup of another Wii. The process is a little complicated and I don't know if BootMii is enough to get it going, but that might be a solution. I'm pretty sure there's still no way to install another Wii's backup onto your normal NAND, though.

Hey guys I got a quick question that I'm sure you can answer.

I'm planning on modding my Wii following the tutorial that is constantly being recommended in this thread, I think I got that part down since the wiki page is pretty simple to understand and I still don't quite get some of the stuff that is mentioned in there but I'll figure it out. Anyways, that's not why I'm here, the question I have is this one: let's say my Wii suddenly stops working properly for whatever reason (not because of the mod, mind you) and I have to send it in for a repair, is it possible to erase all traces of Homebrew so Nintendo fixes my console?

That's pretty much it, I think, haha. The reason I'm kind of paranoid of my Wii getting busted for whatever reason is because I have had to send it in twice now, one for a broken disc drive and the other for corrupted memory, this one being the most recent, so I'm kinda worried it might break again in the future (though they sent me a replacement Wii with this latest repair).

So yeah, thanks and I'd appreciate it if someone can answer my question. By the way this is my first post ever on this NeoGAF forum you guys have here, I've been reading the boards for years now but never really felt the need to post anything, I'm more of reader than a poster. :)

It depends what you do now and how it breaks. If you make a BootMii backup before doing anything else (like running the HBC), then yes, you can remove all trace later on by restoring that backup, then deleting BootMii using the same installer you install it with. That's if your Wii still lets you restore that back up (memory faults and so on might not).

Glad to see there's still some life in here... Sometime soon I plan to finally get the HBC installed on my Wii. I looked up the info and had some questions answered here a few months back, and got side-tracked with other projects.

On the bright side, time has worked in my favor. I was able to install Dolphin on my Mac, and figured out how to get a boiler-plate project compiling in Xcode 4 and launching the binary in the emu. Testing will be silky smooth!

If anyone else is a Mac user and wants info/help on setting it up, let me know. :)

Sorry if this has been covered before, so my brother lent me his Wii console since he wasn't using it and I've softmodded all over again using the ModMii wizard since games like Xenoblade wasn't working. But now I can't load any of the Guitar Hero or Rock Band games no matter what I try. I've redid everything a couple of times, tried USB Loader GX, Configurable USB Loader, WiiFlow and also changed cIOS around based on the guides out there, but they all give me the same result. Rock Band games always go to black screen upon loading (no safety screen whatsoever) and Guitar Hero games seem to be always stuck at the initial loading before you get into the main menu.

He was playing those games before I remodded so they should be fine. So I'm puzzled and out of ideas. Has anyone experienced something similar before? Or is it possible to reset all the softmods and do a clean mod again?

Hi all - so seeing the Xenoblade topic has really forced me to want to go back to my hacked Wii. I soft-modded it because I didn't understand how to update it/not get screwed with newer stuff that I wanted to buy. So here I am again...

I've bought a copy of Lego Indiana Jones from my first run at this (Indiana PWNS is still a working hack, right?), so I think I've got what I need there. What I'm worried about is just how to keep my system updated without worrying about new games screwing me up. And how to play Xenoblade...But I'll figure that out eventually.

So with that, is there a good resource that makes it a bit easier to understand how to keep your system from updating and how to play the latest releases without fear of it overwriting your softmod? OR even how to keep it from doing so when you connect to the internet? I have a few games I've bought on WiiWare/VC, so I'd love to not have those screw me up either, and if something new comes out that I want, I want to be able to connect and grab it without it overwriting.

Much thanks to anyone who can help make this stuff more clear! :)

All of the stuff you want is covered in the tutorial. You no longer need any particular games; there's a working, SD-based softmod for 4.3 Wiis again and it includes instructions on how to avoid disc and online updates.

On Skyward Sword, don't ask questions until the game has actually released, guys. If you want to be prepared, just run through the tutorial again to update everything.

Is it cool to ask questions now that it's out in Europe?

I'm just wondering if it has any issues when installed to a HD. If not, I'll just run it through Gecko. If neither works, I'll figure out another way to make it work. I just don't want to be sitting around on sunday figuring this stuff out like I did with Galaxy 2.

I'm fairly sure it works totally fine, provided you have all the homebrew stuff up to date according to the tutorial. You might also need to be at firmware 4.3.

Success! I went through steps from the Wiki to get the HBC installed. Initially I tried the "Smash Stack" and failed miserably. I'm not sure if maybe a lingering stage file - Smash Service? - or what kiboshed it, but it didn't launch the installer like the video tutorial showed.

I ended up resorting to plan B and doing the "Letter Bomb" method. Though it had a few more steps and seemed a bit more involved, it did the trick. Admittedly, I sat there staring at the bubbles on the HBC menu thinking I was waiting for something. Then I pressed home the home button and realized I saw nothing because I have no apps on the SD Card. lol.

At any rate, thanks for the help and instructions, Clipper. :)

I followed the instructions on how to install homebrew and bootmii by using the letterbomb thingy, and when I tried to move the cursor in the menu that appears nothing happened, I pressed A to advance thinking maybe there's nothing to choose, in the next screen when it says it will install Homebrew Channel and BootMii as IOS, I could'nt move my selection always, so I clicked A where I was (exit I think) and it kinda turned off I think, and the blue light on my Wii started blinking, so I turned it off manually by holding the power button.

What did I do wrong? *sigh*

Heh, thanks for replying, but I know I have to use the D-Pad, the problem is when I try to move my selection with the D-Pad it doesn't move at all, the only button that responds is the A button. I'm guessing it didn't install anything right? What about that blinking blue light? I hope I didn't do anything wrong.

And while I'm here again, I'll ask another question. If I mod it, can I still keep using everything as normal? Netflix, WiiShop Channel (including buying DLC for Rock Band 3), Nintendo Channel, etc. ?

Yes, you can use everything still.

As for the control issue, make sure you are using an official controller, and sync it to the Wii before starting (at the Wii Menu, push the sync button near the SD slot on the Wii and the sync button in the battery compartment of the remote in quick succession).

Letterbomb is amazing. Twiizers blew my mind again. Nice to have the HBC back on my main menu... even if Smash won't boot via Gecko. My disc drive is knackered. :/

I am using an official controller though, and it is already synched to the console. It works fine otherwise, it's just not responding in the installation process (well, aside from the A button, that works fine apparently). Should I synch it up again or what?

Regarding the blue light situation though? Was that a normal reaction to me pressing 'exit' in the installation screen? It kinda freaked me out a bit. :P

I'm paranoid about doing this because my Wii is still under warranty right now because of my recent repair, I'm wondering if I should just wait for it to expire. I just want to play my games from my USB Drive though...

You've been really helpful Clipper though, I appreciate you taking the time to help us all out.
