GAF Wii Homebrew thread: Homebrew, emulators, USB disc installs! Easy tutorial!

Google "Devolution". It's very much in its early phase of development, but it can play some of the audio streaming games (Crazy Taxi, Eternal Darkness) perfectly and development for the others is ongoing. It's also integrated along with DIOS MIOS into the USB Loaders.

You will need the original GC disc to verify on first boot, but after that, it's diskless"

Nice, thanks for the info.

Probably going to be doing this tonight.

I want to test cube games via usb ... but I heard so much problems that I need to ask one thing :

I heard that if I install the stuff that I need for it I will not be able to run cube games on disc again .... so my question is, is there any way to revert that if I like my mini-dvds more ?

Yes, and I do plan to add tutorial instructions to do just that very soon. The method is to us Dop-Mii Wiibrew Edition to replace your MIOS with the original one from Nintendo.

I've installed DIOS MIOS, manually updated Cfg to v70r36.dol, and set the DML version to DM, but it still wants to install GameCube games to my SD card.

I tried downloading the .dol referenced in the "Using DIOS MIOS" section of the tutorial, but I just get a page saying "The page you requested is invalid."

Try clicking the URL of the invalid page and hitting Enter. Also, were you copying and pasting as suggested?

Edit: Actually, it looks like the file isn't available there any longer. I'll come up with an alternate mechanism to get it.

Edit 2: OK, now I know what's going on. USB ripping is added in the r37 beta versions. I guess I might link to one of those.

Edit 3: Updated. Try this link to get a beta version of Cfg Mod that should allow you to rip to usb. Perhaps an option is needed, I haven't tested on my own yet...

The beta Gfg worked perfectly! Thanks Clipper!

Having some issues with DIOSMIOS (2.2 update 3), USB Loader GX (V3, rev1200), and my Wii in general. Haven't used it in well over a year, maybe even two years.

In any case, I'm having issues with both Wii and GC games via USB. Most Wii games are loading just fine, but after a while thwy just sit on a black screen when loading's involved. An example would be going into a room in Super Mario Galaxy or even restarting a level. With GameCube games the issue is similar, but somewhat worse. I can play my rips of SoulCalibur II, Double Dash and Wind Waker for very short periods of time until a cutscene or some other kind of loading needs to be done and I'm stuck on a black screen. It happens randomly rather than on specific cutscenes/loading sequences.

I'm using a European Wii, but my GC games are American and my Wii games are a mixture of Japanese, European and American if that matters. I'm using a 2GB SD card (2 class; I know) and a 1TB passport drive. Both are formatted to FAT32 with 32KB clusters.

Here's my syscheck. Apologies for the huge dump:

Anyone have any idea what the root of my problems could be? I can't say I understand the above. Do I need to update some/all of my IOS files?

Edit: Used this guide to start fresh with all the latest custom IOS files. All my Wii games are working like a charm now. My GameCube games still only run a while without crashing, but it's amazing they run at all really. Now I'm just trying to figure out how to get my WiiWare and VC games off my Japanese Wii so I can run both my European and Japanese ones off the same system.

Hmm.

Currently Dios Mios does USB loading for Gamecube games.

Dios Mios Lite does SD loading for Gamecube games.

Do you think they'll ever make it so you can use both USB and SD loading at the same time?

i has all my Wii games set up for USB hard drive loading complete with all the covers in a nice coverflow arrangement.

However, can i has the instruction manuals on there too?

99% of the time I don't need them and I could walk up the stairs to the back bedroom where I have stored all the Wii games if I really wished to check something in the instructions.

If I could has the manuals available like the covers though for maximum laziness i would be a happy bunny cat :).

Quick question.

When I install the DM(L) it modifies only the MIOS with custom MIOS? If I need to remove DM(L) later I just restore the official MIOS with DOP-Mii?

just wanted to pop in here and say I heartily recommend the following guide for further information about Dios Mios. I found it last night after DM didn't work for me (possibly a hard drive issue, haven't looked into it yet) and I was afraid I'd lost the ability to play gc games off the disc.

For the record, booting discs in CFG wasn't working, and neither was Gecko or any similar GC loader because they all require a working MIOS and I didn't make a backup of the original one.

I think some of the stuff in this guide should be added to GAF's official guide - for example I can confirm the MIOS that is given there restored complete functionality to my drive. I can play GC games from any region and with any video mode, just like I could before.

They are also working on a listing of harddrives that aren't compatible, as well as a games list.

I'll look into it and thanks. I hadn't been able to get discs working through the methods either and have been meaning to revise that point anyway. Just a little too busy at the moment.

Actually, on a quick look, it seems it's mostly working because they have updated to v2.2 last week. The link in the other tutorial is to the exact same page as the GAF one. Still, I do plan to add some instructions for Dop-Mii when I get some time (perhaps tomorrow if I'm lucky).

Where can I download the Configurable USB Loader v70 mod r37 beta that you need for using Dios Mios? I can't find a working link for it.

EDIT: Never mind, I found a working link on GBATemp. You should probably update the links on your tutorial though, Clipper.

Is it normal for Gamecube games to take a long time to install with Configurable USB loader? The first game I'm installing is going to take over 10 minutes.

Sorry for the triple post, but I installed two GC games but I can't get either of them to work. When I try to start them my screen just becomes static-y. I think it's trying to force them to run in progressive scan when my TV doesn't support it (I'm using component cables). Is there any way to fix this? I tried different video options but that didn't work. I'm going to try switching to composite cables to see if that works, but I'd prefer to use my component cables.

EDIT: Yep, it works with my composite cables, but I'd really like to use my component cables instead.

Gamecube games should always ask you before switching to progressive mode. It is activated on a per-game basis, not a per-system.

I managed to solve the issue by pressing B while the game boots. Everything seems to be working now, awesome!

(Sorry, misread what you were saying.) DML apparently doesn't use the same behavior, it seems to automatically force GC games to run in progressive scan when you're using component cables.

I'm worried about my TV being set in an unsupported video mode every time I boot a Gamecube game, though. Can this cause any damage to my TV if I do it repeatedly?

Thanks for telling me the link had expired. I've set the page to point to the beta thread instead as the betas expire too quickly to keep updating them.

Yes.

Extremely unlikely. Also, using the game settings to set your video mode might make it default to something other than progressive, perhaps.

I think my launch Wii just died

I turn it on, and nothing much comes up on the screen.

It flickers a bit, but nothing appears.

The blue slot does a weird double flicker, but then nothing else.

I have turned it off/on about 20 times, and one time it got to the Warning/Health screen, but will not go any further (it sticks there)

I had Homebrew setup too - for USB disc installs, and if I hold down the Wii reset button, it takes me to something called "Prilloader v0.3b (r48m)"

This is the only navigateable option I now have available to me.

I am pretty such Homebrew did not kill the Wii - the Wii just died with Homebrew options on it

Can I do anything from here to make my Wii fully function again from this state?

On my Wii when it can't find the Bootmii files on the sd-card it double flickers and boots normally into Warning/Health screen, NEVER double flickers like that when it finds the files, I have the Bootmii files on the sd-card to boot directly to Homebrew channel.

I have a weird feeling my Wii is just dead - and that loader is the only access I have to anything right now.

I cannot get anywhere currently. If I take the SD Card and Hard Drive out I get the same result as having them in. I cannot reach the System Menu / Dashboard at all.

I am pretty decent at following instructions (which is how I got the homebrew stuff working in the first place). However, I am pretty terrible at diagnosing what is actually wrong - and really have now idea what I need to fix (if I can fix it)

I guess my Wii is technically "bricked," although I have not done anything in the last few months that would have caused this - and have played games from disc installs for the last few months without any warning signs.

Reading about Priloader on here (http://wiibrew.org/wiki/Preloader/Priiloader) it tells me that I can use it to "Save wii from banner & other kind of bricks that aren't ios/boot2/nand corruption related" - that sounds like something that is wrong with me, so it give me hope.

My cousin update my wii using the xenoblade disc. I read the wiki but I'm not sure what are the steps I have to do in order to get my homebrews up and running again. Could someone be kind enough to tell me wich tutorial I need to follow?

If you had followed the tutorial within the last year or two, you're still up to date and don't need to do anything. Otherwise, just treat your Wii as unhacked and do the full install. It's difficult to know exactly what got deleted as it depends when you installed it.

Most of the ways to save your Wii with Priiloader require you to either know what ou did wrong that bricked your Wii or to have made a previous backup of your Wii. It doesn't sound like either of those apply to you, unfortunatey.

What you can try is to get Priiloader to launch Dop-Mii. I can't tell you exactly how to do that as I've never used Priiloader, but it should be intuitive. Once you have Dop-Mii running, try to use it to do a reinstall of the latest System Menu. That's the most likely problem that has caused it to brick.

What's the "correct" way to install individual IOS files? Just a WAD manager and a WAD of the IOS? Or that DOP-Mii thing? I'm preparing my Wii for DQ10, which apparently needs IOS59. I heard it's not on NUS, so I'll have to get the WAD from the game disc. I just want to do it the correct way.

EDIT: Also, is the boot2v4 update the only "dangerous" update that I should look out for when trying to update various parts of my Wii? My system menu is 3.2, and I've not really had to do many updates to play games in the past, just the occasional shop channel update or miscellaneous IOS installation. But I'd actually like to get on 4.3 before I do the region change I'm gonna do to play DQ10. My Wii is a launch model, FYI.

It's not dangerous any more. Just update from a recent disc. As for the IOS, Dop-Mii is still your best shot. It can install from the WAD version too.

And DO NOT region change the Wii. That will almost certainly brick you.

Thanks. After doing a little research, I think I had a misunderstanding about what boot2v4 did. Is it correct that since I have a launch Wii, I can always install BootMii as boot2? For some reason I had it in my mind that boot2v4 would block me from being able to do that, but it seems that may not be the case?

Why will region changing brick? Others seem to have done it fine?

I wouldn't normally want to region change, since in almost every case it isn't necessary, but word is that DQ10 requires access to the JP shop. I know all of the downsides associated with that (removing account, losing access to purchases, etc.), but I'm willing to do it for that since I've only bought a couple of things anyway. Just wondering how it could lead to a brick.

GAF I have a question: I want to use cheat codes on my Wii, because nobody should have to spend weeks doing the RNG work for the tails in Final Fantasy 4: The After Years. What is a good program for using cheats on my Wii, how much risk is involved, and how simple is it to install?

So I followed tutorial from the site. I go the hard drive from friend who already has installed nsmb for us and partitioned it as wbfs drive. He is saying it was working fine in his wii. It does not work on my other friends wii. What should be the case? Do i have to install game again from the disk or will it work without it?

USB loader is 3.0 says waiting for hard drive. I followed exact tutorial steps. Hard drive is working with other wii.

That is correct. boot2v4 will not stop you from reinstalling BootMii on your launch Wii. It's just that systems that shipped with boot2v4 have the newer boot1 which stops you from modifying boot2 via homebrew.

As for region switching, if you don't do it correctly, you end up with partial installs of the menu and the system will crash every time it tries to access the menu. It also makes it susceptible to updates from Nintendo putting you into a bricked state. Be very, very careful and take BootMii backups along the way, just in case.

Gecko OS is the main application. You can also use the Gecko features of Cfg to launch games with cheats. Both are in the tutorial.

I'd say that you didn't install d2x correctly. It's very hard to work out otherwise what it might be without error messages.

I managed to do the region switch fine. I had AnyRegionChanger switch everything to Japanese, then I exited out and had DOP-Mii install 3.2J (I was on 3.2U). I can get into the Wii settings just fine in Japanese now, and my shop channel now connects to the Japanese store - already downloaded the JP internet channel fine from there. It also boots my JP GC games and Shiren 3 right from the disc channel - other discs wanted me to update so I didn't risk it yet.

The next thing is getting it to 4.3. Would it be okay to just let the DQ10 disc (or other JP Wii games) install all of the updates it wants to now? Or should I still just try to update everything by hand via DOP-Mii? I have a BootMii backup so I'm not really worried, although I do know that once I install boot2v4, it'll wipe out BootMii and I'll have to reinstall that, so maybe I should go ahead and install that manually first?

anyone have any idea why when I'm playing certain games from CFG USB loader (Wii Sports Resort, Link's Crossbow Training, Rhythm Heaven Fever), my wii remote connection seems to randomly drop for a moment? Makes games like RHF impossible. Works fine when playing from disc.

Have you been able to play Full Throttle on it? Currently, using it on my laptop, mouse implementation is borked enough to make the Motorcycle fist fights near impossible.
The motorcycle fist fight is near impossible full stopped. Awful, awful design.

I've played the intro of Full Throttle to test it out (I was interested in seeing how the Wii version would handle the combination of sprites and FMV - really well!) but didn't go past the first interactive area.

I don't look forward to playing the fight section with a Wiimote.

So, do we anticipate a new firmware release in order to gain the ability to transfer our games to the WiiU? If so, could it stop HBC from working? I'd like to hear everyone's thoughts on that and how they plan to react to it if so.

I only ever installed HBC because my disk drive was failing, the motor finally kicked the bucket and I ended up replacing it, so I don't even really need it anymore, but it is still convenient for me to keep my few "grownup" games on a thumb drive with my kids dance game in the drive at all times.

If being able to carry my WW and VC games forward means I can't use disk loader anymore, I won't be very upset about it. Basically, anything short of Nintendo nuking my games library because I have some unauthorized software, I'd be OK.

IIRC, this can be solved by updating d2x and perhaps Cfg as well. Using a different base IOS (so choosing IOS247 if you followed the tutorial) might also solve the problem.

There will certainly be a new firmware release. It might try to combat homebrew, it might not. We won't know until then, of course.

If they do combat HBC somehow, I doubt they will do it in a way that can't be easily worked around. We shall see, though...

I don't know when this happened, but for the last several months, I've had this issue where playing games from discs via the regular game channel results in the Wii going to a perma-blank screen, but copying them to my USB drive and playing with Configurable works fine. Actually, now that I think about it, playing NSMBW (one of the games that fail to play the normal way) via Riivolution worked fine, too. Any reason why that might be happening?

I'll edit this with the firmwave revision when I get a chance, but tips in the meantime would be great. :)

edit:
Hrmm, 4.1U. Definitely out of date, though I don't know if that's the cause of this specific problem. Interestingly, the homebrew channel's disc booter fails with "Error 002", but I can launch my new game (Rayman Origins) via Riivolution.

I am having a problem with installing the game to USB with Configurable. It halts at ~20%. But it might be that the drive is going bad, so I'm not reporting that as a full-on problem yet.

my brothers gonna buy a new wii, what firmware does it come with? he wants tk homebrew his wii too, is it still possible?

It should be the latest firmware, and yes it is hackable. However, he might have difficulty performing the hack with his current Wii Remote, so you might want to lend him an older one if he does.

works fine now big thanks :>)

edit. oh we tried installing arc rise fantasia, some reason it didnt install properly because when we tried to load it the first time it came up some hum error, so we deleted that installation of the disc and reinstalled it again

but when we load the game after the new installation, it gets stuck on the wii controller user screen that shows just before the game title supposed to show.

we have the latest d2x 247 248 installed but doesnt like any of those, we didnt bother install 222-223 because i think your great site said d2x was the best types.

any help?

So I've started up the and so far so good. I have a few questions.

Is there a list of Wii games that have problems with USB installs or were able to get backed up fine, but have issues when playing them 10 to 20 minutes later?

For instance, I was able to get Super Mario Galaxy backed up, but when I try to start it up and play it, the screen would go and stay blank. I would have no choice but to hold the power button down and then power it back up.

Also, I can't access USB Loader channel, as it'll either throw me back to the wii menu screen or blank out like above like trying to play SMG. However I can access it through Homebrew channel.

Also, is there a cover flow mod available for the NES and SNES emulators?

Are DM and DML the same project now? I just updated everything to DML 2.2. Haven't tried USB loading but the SD card still works great.
