GAF Wii Homebrew thread: Homebrew, emulators, USB disc installs! Easy tutorial!

For anybody that is interested and is looking forward to having the option, Mega/Sega CD support will soon be coming to the Gensplus emulator on Wii. I was a huge Mega/Sega CD fan back in the day so the upcoming support of this for me is fantastic. I used to play the hell out of 'Thunderhawk' and 'Batman Returns' back in the day. Plus getting the Ecco games and 'Snatcher' on the system will be fantastic!

It is. Unless I'm misunderstanding you.
The link cable so you can use the GBA as a controller for Gamecube games like Zelda: Four Swords. Last I checked, it didn't work on the Wii. I've been using Dolphin and VisualBoyAdvance to emulate the setup.

That's odd. Why wouldn't they work just fine with the GCN controller ports? From what I understand, the Wii's GCN compatibility basically switches the system into a full-on GCN (just with no expansion port).

Edit: From what I'm reading online, it should work fine.

But... but... it didn't do Tingle Tuner when I tried years ago when I first got it!

I've been living a lie...

Seriously though, emulating Zelda Four Swords is just the way to go from a practicality stand-point. I'm the only one I know who still has a GBA, nevermind a link cable.

Pacman Vs. definitely works fine on my Wii. I haven't actually tried Four Swords on it, but if one works the other should as well.

Personally, as someone who still has a few GC games but no GC controllers or memory cards anymore, what I'm looking for is:

- GameCube support <-- check
- Using a USB device to load the games <-- check, not check --> ideally the same WBFS/FAT/NTFS setup as USB loaders
- Using a USB device as a memory card <-- sort of check
- Classic controller support <-- :(

There is a guy nicked tueidj on GBA Temp forums who claims to be working on a piece of software he calls Devolution. Apparently it doesn't use the GC mode but is more of a GC emulator for Wii. His longer-term goal is CC support.

However, although he seems to know what he's talking about when he explains technical difficulties and other things, there are a few reasons why I'm a little bit sceptical about this project.

- it's not an open source project, which means he is working on it alone, not using any existing stuff
- initially he wanted to release a first version in May but nothing came out so far
- he'd like to include some sort of anti-piracy functionality and I cannot think of one that wouldn't kind of make the software pointless

etc.

But I thought it might be worth checking out anyway if it ever gets released

Hey guys, I take it that CFG USB loader can still only do gamecube stuff off the SD?

I spent an assload of time yesterday and I can get the game recognized and get the covers on it and stuff, but when I run it, it just goes to crazy text screen and then reboots after 60 seconds.

you really need to read my post on the page before this one

you really do. In other words, I've been playing Timesplitters 2 and Twilight Princess GC off USB for a day now.

Four Swords Adventures is definitely playable with GBAs on Wii. i beat it like that the last time i beat it and that was in 2007 when i used the Wii only for all GC games.

Okay, I will try that. Ugh, I wish I could have them all together though. edit #7 - oh i see, if I'm willing to have my Wii games on FAT32 again, then they can all be together?

Is there are different loader I can use that can somehow show everything all together.

PS - FZERO is the best ever.

Just following up from this post I put up earlier.

The new Gensplus GX update is out and has now added Sega/Mega CD support. I have tested a few games (some that use the scaling capabilities of the system) and everything seems to be running superb. CD audio is not supported yet but this first release is fantastic, the individual behind the emulator should be proud!

For all you Sega/Mega CD fans out there I would go give this a shot immediately!

Just a warning:

If you install Dios Mios to run GCN games off a USB HDD, it disables the ability to play your GCN discs through the main home screen disc channel. You would need another program that gives you the option to load from disc.

WAT! Thats a deal breaker. Well, that and no CC support. I was hoping I could use that as my 4th GC controller. Although, I guess the button mapping would be odd.

Meh, GC Boot as a forwarder does the job fine for me.

Hmmm. That is bizarre. Out of curiosity, do you know what the technical reason is for that? I'm thinking it might be better to just wait for the code to mature. Hopefully it won't be too long until they get back that functionality and (with some luck) get it to run off of NTFS like Wii games.

Crediar has has this isn't gonna happen ever, the NTFS library is way too big.

Why does it take time to "load" the GC games instead of instantly booting like the Wii ones?

Shit takes forever!

PS: And doesn't even work for me.

Looks like it's time for me to get around to testing that and getting it into the FAQ.

Won't happen until next week, though, as I'm away from my Wii...

Looking forward to it, I'm planning to do a lot of hard disc related tinkering in a week or two (thought I might as well upgrade my PS3 one to take full advantage of PS+, and have been toying with picking up a new PC one) so it'll be good to include that at the same time.

Wish I could remember what my current USB HD is formatted to. I fear it's NTFS, so I'll need to plan around that.

If you're installing something that lets you run GC titles off USB, why would you need the ability to run them off-disc?

For games with streaming audio.

Actually, I did some more research after I posted, and I found that you can get it back by re-installing the original MIOSv10. The system will go back to normal after that, but to play the games off the USB again, you need to reinstall Dios Mios v2 wad.

Hi, I have a red Wii (NSMB edition, 4.3) and I'd like to use it to watch movies (AVI files et al) and DVDs.

Obviously I'll have to install the Homebrew Channel, but what other programs will I need for this?

Also, I'll be buying Beat the Beat: Rhythm Paradise at the end of the week, will I have any problem running it?

Oh.

Is there a technical reason why USB can't do streaming audio? Is it something that can be eventually overcome?

Doesn't make much sense to me seeing as I can emulate games on my PC off a USB harddrive, but I don't really understand much about Wii hardware so I can't speculate.

It's been a while since we've been able to do this, but click my tag or this image:

I think it is just a matter of Dios Mios not being mature enough to handle the streaming audio yet.

Stop replying to posts and get making your Gamecube USB guide, Clipper!

... I chickened out of doing it myself.

Won't be back home until Friday and I'll be busy for that day and most of the weekend. However, I'm on leave next week, so look for it then.

And given what I'm hearing hear, I'll include the apps you need to play GameCube discs as well.

Ive just been prompted that a new Netflix "upgrade" is available. Is this safe to upgrade? Must have just gone live because I was watching a few hours ago and never saw the prompt.

Edit: upgraded and no problem. Don't notice any changes. Maybe a bit faster after last update made it really slow and shitty. Still not as fast as it once was

I imported Xenoblade quite awhile ago, and the only way I can play it is when I load the disc so that the region encoding is disabled.

(I used the tutorial on joystiq.com that caused a lot of controversy)

Anyway with that said, if I run the game that way is there still anyway to load a cheat device? I ask because lately I am more in the mood to expierence the games story than have to worry about gameplay and mangaging.

I say this because the main offenders of a backlog to me are JRPGs and it never fails that they are always the one that are very very long. (I was surprised I managed to beat FF13-2 in 20 hours)

Now I know a lot of people are going to recommend that I play Xenoblade regularly since it's such a good game. Which I don't disagree with completly. Just if I decide to use a cheat device would I have any such way?

If anybody is successful at running NTSC-U Rogue Squadron II: Rogue Leader from USB, I'd appreciate knowing the software versions/settings you're using.

wait what? im away for 3 months catching up on my Steam backlog and GC USB loading is solved?! Holy mother of god I'm so glad i already ripped them to play on dolphin!

It's Ready, My Body. hnnng

Yeah, I don't get this either. My GBA link cable worked fine on my Wii with that old GC demo disc that had the free Dr Mario and Wario Ware downloads on it with no problem so don't see why Four Swords wouldn't work.

Yep, just as I posted I said "what are you waiting for?" and followed the tutorial. It was supereasy, installed HBC and HBB, and got MCPlayer and a couple emulators running in less than 30 min.

Only one problem: with MCPlayer I managed to watch a couple movie files (mp4 and avi), but couldn't get a DVD movie to work. Is there any step I have to make before doing so? Does watching DVDs really cause any problem to the optical lens? I don't believe so but I'd like a confirmation.

Edit: Oh, it seems that I need to install DVDx. Is that correct?

Not true - the music in F Zero, Super Monkey Ball, Smash Bros Melee and Mario Kart DD work fine through USB for me, and they are all streaming audio (ADX and BRSTM).

Haven't tried Metroid Prime yet, but I'm sure the music will work fine too (midi produced by Yamamoto, but stored and played as streaming audio in the game)

I played Prime to the first save station and it all worked great.

F-Zero isn't working so well, though. I booted it with a disc in the drive, started a new NMM save, and after beating the first course of Ruby Circuit on Novice difficulty, it hangs before loading the second race.

I took the disc out, ran the game using the 'no disc' patch (still with NMM), and I was able to complete Ruby Circuit. However, after I beat the first course of Sapphire Circuit I ran into the hang/no load problem again.

Odd, because I didn't get that issue. However, Twilight Princess crashes randomly at certain doors/entrances so I had to go back to disc to continue it. Maybe its down to regional differences?

Apart from Paper Mario, all my games are PAL.

Yeah, I'm using a NTSC-U Wii and all my Gamecube software is NTSC-U, so we can't really compare notes here.

I wish RS2 was working for me, especially because my disc has intermittent read errors. On the glass half-full side, I was able to get a good image cleanrip'd after a few tries.

I have a NTSC Wii and a PAL Wii. The PAL Wii has 4 VC games I've purchased but I'm mainly using my NTSC Wii for games so is there a homebrew solution whereby I can use my SD card to transfer the games across?

I'd imagine not but I hold out hope.

Im not even sure the NTSC Wii can play PAL vc games.

I just installed DIOS MIOS v2.0; it works very well. It's much better than DML. I've only tried F-Zero and Melee so far, but the games load way faster and the stuttering issues I had when using DML are gone.

I didn't have to do anything to my USB drive. It was already FAT32, so all I did was copy my games from the SD card to the USB drive. The only step that I missed at first was changing the setting in CFG USB Loader from DML to DM.

I'm really impressed that people are still figuring out stuff like this on the Wii, especially since it was once called impossible.
