It's amazing actually how awesome a library the Wii has, despite the naysayers. Having all these games at my fingertips is going to be awesome! Still a few more I'd like to put on there if I can find them.

Moving on to Gamecube now if I can figure that out!

Wait, did you add a bunch of shortcut channels on your Wii menu, or is that just a fancy skin/front-end for a USB Loader?

Is it possible to run HBChannel on the Wii U through the Wii menu?

Yep, it's even possible run GC on Wii U now (don't have a Wii U to do it myself yet but it's definitely possible.
 
It's just the vanilla version of USB Loader GX. You can do the artwork mode but I much prefer the channel mode.

So I suppose adding real channels on the main menu is still risky enough to brick your Wii? Would be so much more convenient :/.

Yeh as far as I can tell, adding channels to the real Wii menu is always risky. And probably more work than it's worth.

Not much difference though when you can boot straight into USB Loader GX, which I'm going to set up soon.

I can't get USB Loader GX to see my Gamecube games, but WiiFlow sees them just fine. If you figure it out, please let me know because I'm stumped.
 
So, they've even set it up so that you can "hide" your hard drive on the Wiiu, so that it'll still play backups in wii mode and not always prompt you to format the hard drive when the wiiu boots up. Basically, it works pretty much the same way my old wii works. The only problem with this mode is that it hides the HDD from every app that's not set up to read it in its hidden mode, so I'm stuck using my meager sd card for emus. Still, it's great to be able to play these great wii games again without have to get up every time and disconnect the hard drive.

Are you sure you installed them correctly? I'm using Dios Mios Lite, for one, and there's a pretty specific procedure after you make the iso: you have to name it "game.iso" and put it into a specific folder on your SD card (typically (your SD card):\games\(game ID without parenthesis)\game.iso). Alternatively, you can use DMToolbox to install them. It comes with Dios Mios and does the same thing automatically.

If you're using a USB drive (i.e regular Dios Mios, not Lite), I think it should be "wbfs" instead of "games", but the rest is the same.
 
I have a wii u I'd like to soft mod, can someone pm me the links to do this. Also does this work with the most recent firmware upgrade?

check the gbatemp forums. they have a pretty decent guide for softmodding wiius. Note that you'll need a wii game with a useable exploit to softmod it but most of the games that work are relatively cheap and not hard to get a hold of.
 
It's possible to play Wii import games on the Wii U with a homebrewchannel on Wii mode right? What do I need to do to make that happen? I would like to play Fishing Resort again.

Thanks... So i previously have a hdd with a bunch of wii games on it... After following the steps at that forum i can plug in my usb hdd and it should detect the drive and work?

the wiiu's usb ports are not as powerful as the wii's are so you might need a y-plug/external power source so that your HDD will work. otherwise, i didnt have to format my drive at all to get it working with CFG loader on the wiiu.

Cool...I'm not up on all the terminology...but my hdd plugs into this thing that plugs into the wall so I think that's what you're talking about since I have an external power source for my hard drive.

I'm just toooo excited to try this later on when I get off work. I've been wanting to play my wii games, "specifically" Xenoblade for a while now.

Yup did all that right. I just figured it out

Turns out deep in the USB Launcher GX settings the default GCN library was set to SD:\games instead of USB0:\games. Everything works now lol

Well in theory it is less risky than untested banners because they are the banners of retail games but the danger is if something goes wrong in the conversion. Plus you have to make for every single game which is time consuming.

Also, filling the Wii menu with channels makes it take much longer to boot up (I used to do that before USB loaders could do playtime logging). I just now have a shortcut channel to the USB loader.

Missing out on the banner animations is a compromise I'm happy with.

Most of the old exploits don't work with the WiiU's vWii. Your best bet is to use something like smashstack, as most of the gaqme-based hacks still work in WiiU's vWii. They seem to have only been able to block twilight hack, bannerbomb and letterbomb with the vWii mode.

So I've installed the HBC on my Wii U (PAL) and have a question regarding what exactly the d2x cios actually does.

Basically I've put a few apps on to my HBC which seem to work fine (couple of emulators) but I don't understand why I need to install d2x? Is it needed to run applications from a hard drive?

If that's the case there's a couple of options IOS57 - 59 but I can't really tell which one I need or want.

Any clarifications would be greatly appreciated (realise this isn't tech support but thought I'd ask anyway).

Also is there any issue running apps from a flash drive? I only hear about people using a full hdd.

From the tutorial:
Nintendo has set up a system that has 256 slots for different IOSes. Each IOS is a system that controls base features of games or menus and so on. Nintendo uses the IOSes from about 4-70 at the moment and occasionally uses new ones when needed. You can have one IOS installed into each slot and both games and homebrew apps can tell the Wii which IOS they want to use.

My recommendation is simply to follow exactly what the GAF tutorial says to install. I believe that is IOS 236, d2x and Hermes if you want to be super complete. I did all three and mine works a treat!

You can use a flash drive I believe, but it might take a few goes to find one that is compatible. That's the same with full size hard drives though too.
 
I'm probably just dumber than dumb because Google and the homebrew wiki aren't quite spelling it out for me. For right now all I'm looking to do is to backup my saves, particularly the Brawl/Mario Kart saves that can't be copied by default, on to my PC so that they will work with Dolphin. The only things on Google that I found are all from 2008/2009 so I don't particularly trust them and I can't seem to find anything on the wiki in the OP. What am I missing here?

Anyone?
 
I've got something I need help with. My Wii died a few years ago and the Wiiware games I saved on my SD card were no longer compatible with my Wii after sending it to Nintendo for repairs. I can redownload all the Wiiware games but they obviously don't have any of the old save files. If I still have the old content.bin file from a Wiiware game is it possible to get the save data from it to run on my refurbished Wii?
 
Finally got around to backing up my Wii data with BootMii, and did the system transfer over to Wii U. Everything was fine and dandy at first, until I tried to restore the data.

I forgotten when I had gotten my Wii, and to be safe I installed BootMii as an IOS (I think mid-2008? A few months before SSBB finally decided to release). I uninstalled the homebrew channel to be on the safe side and avoid any possible hiccups when using the transfer tool. Now, when I went to restore the data, I reinstalled BootMii as an IOS, and it kept coming up with errors and wouldn't reload my data (Try again, Hashimoto-San!, or something like that).

Since then, I uninstalled BootMii IOS, and installed it as boot2 without any hassles. It's restoring now, but it's only one in every 50 or so little grey blocks turn green during the process. Is that normal? I figured the software is the same, or did I generally fuck it up?

my problem is I wanted to go fat 32 so I can just reformat the whole drive and use it normally.. so using wbfs manager I transferred the games to a drive on my pc (making an iso file) and reformatted the usb drive.

the problem is now I cant copy the iso's back to the usb drive because the file sizes is too big!!! (a school boy error). is there a way I can copy them to the drive without too much hassle?

Wii Backup Manager works great for me. I'd get Version 76 though, the newest, 78, crashes and doesn't work for me for some reason.

Is it really too much hassle to put the discs back in your Wii and re-rip them? You'll want to do this anyway because the games will come out in a compressed format when you rip them to your FAT32 drive, which will save you a ton of space.

All I wanted to do for now was copy my saves onto my PC so I download Savegame Manager GX and after another number of hours finally figured out that I need to select compress to get the saves onto my SD card in the proper format.

So of course I start doing this and every game transfers fine except the game I care about most: Brawl. I get "Exception (DSI) Occurred!" and then a bunch of code. Of course when I Google this it's all people who got the error are doing USB loader or cheat code stuff and no one seems to have the same problem as I did. Any reason why just trying to copy the Brawl save would do this and nothing else? I can still extract the save fine but I have no idea if it's possible to get an extracted save to work on Dolphin.

I'm pretty rubbish with this tech stuff and i read that FAT32 was now the format of choice so i went with that. All ive done from the day i started with the homebrew stuff was follow instructions, so the thought of over complicating things with the risk of damaging my wii was out of the question.

Also, i just thought i'd ask the question here.. if there wasn't a way i would just re-rip. Hopefully by Choppasmith putting the answer on here (thanks again) it not only helped me but may also help others that tried to do something clever and ended up in a bit of a pickle..
 
So IIRC there was something that I installed that disallowed my Wii from reading regular discs, anyone remember what it was and if an alternative to it was ever made that didn't require disabling my disc drive? Thanks. I've been out of the loop for a while and I'm trying to piece things together.

Are you using SD or SDHC? I'm not sure if it carries through to homebrew, but I know when saving Brawl normally you can't use SDHC as it's not compatible with it.
I also think you usually can't do a transfer with it (since it uses friend codes or something) but I'm not sure that would carry through to homebrew.

SD. I couldn't install homebrew at all with an SDHC. Normally you can't transfer games like Brawl which is exactly why I installed the homebrew. Other online games like Mario Kart that don't let you transfer normally transferred fine with the savegame manager. Everything except Brawl worked.
 
I apologise if this question has been answered elsewhere, but all I really want to do is run emulators on the Wii U Gamepad without having to use the TV. Can I do this with the current state of homebrew?

I just want to play C64 games while the wife is watching Real Housewives of Bullshit Palace or whatever.
 
So I think I've hacked my vWii as far as I can, untill they give us something that allows menu themes. :)

For those who are interested in playing GC backups on their Wiiu via homebrew there's some interesting developments going on at Gba Temp. Nintendont is in it's beta stage so the only game supported is Zelda WW but they promise HD capability and I'm assuming a larger library down the road. Basically Nintendont allows you to load a GC iso off you SD card (for now) and supports several control methods. Currently I'm sticking with my Ps3 controller.

After some tinkering I got Nintendont running WW and it doesn't look too bad, better than WW in SD at least. It's no dolphin, but for the ease and practicality of just being able to load all your backups off one console it's a cool proposition. I'm hoping it doesn't take long to finish their project lol, cuz I'm dying to see what my other games look like on it :) Have a look and see what you think.

crediar has announced his new project: Nintendont
His aim is to devellop an app for vWii and Wii which can play Gamecube Games.

What is Nintendont?

Nintendont is obviously not a modification of the MIOS, like DIOS MIOS (lite), because the vWii does not have a MIOS.
It is neither a emulator, because the vWii is not powerful enough to emulate GameCube games.
Nintendon't will be more like an interpreter which runs Gamecube games natively. Most likely it will work similar to Devolution, but nothing is confirmed yet. (crediar: "Well I never looked into how devo works so I can't really tell.")

What features has Nintendont?
It can play Gamecube games on vWii and Wii
It supports several controllers
It won't support Memory Card emulation. It will use NMM like DIOS MIOS It will use a Memory card image
It will most likely support audio streaming, what DIOS MIOS never did
(crediar: "especially audio streaming will be much simpler this way.")
There will be seperate versions for loading games from sd card and from usb-drives, just like DIOS MIOS.
Will it work on regular Wii, too?

Yes. Wii and WiiU will use the same build.
The Wii-version will support USB-controllers and Gamecube Controllers.

Will there be a AP-protection?

Definitely no.

What gamepads are working?

Currently it is known that the following gamepads are working:
PS2 Dual shock
PS3 Dual shock
Logitech Rumble Gamepad F510
Trio Linker v1 (GC, DC, PS)
mayflash wii classic controller to usb adapter
Mayflash Wireless Wii U Pro Controller Adapter [W009] (L/R analog are not working because WiiU Pro lacks analog shoulder buttons)

Is my gamepad compatible?

If you have a specific controller, you want to play with, you can test those app with your controller:

When will it be released?

The app is in early beta status. It will be released when it's done.

There's an alpha version which was released on September 20th which will play Zelda Wind Waker only! (NTSC-U or NTSC-J)
It was released the same day than Nintendo's Zelda Wind Waker HD on WiiU in USA, users can now play either the WiiU HD version or the GameCube version on their console.

You need to READ the included readme.txt to know how to setup and use nintendont.
If you get "This version of IOS58 is not supported" on Wii, you need to update your IOS58 to version 24.32 (IOS58_installer from Tantric will NOT install the correct version)
HID controller works only with USB cable.
 
So I picked up a Zelda Edition WiiU and am reading up on how to install HBC on the Wii side. Every guide says I have to use a non--SDHC card in order to do the Smash Stack exploit. Is this absolutely necessary? We have like 15 SD cards in this house, but every single one is SDHC. I also own TP and I'm getting mixed answers via google over whether the TP hack works or not.

Any help?

Yea, it has to be a non-sdhc card.
 
Has anyone had any luck getting Mednafen to play PC Engine CD games? For the life of me i cannot get it to work. I used TurboRip to rip the game and it still doesnt work. Syscard3.bin is also in the correct folder.
