You have to dump the nand keys, the nand itself, use a modded d2x installer to install cios and be crazy careful about how you do it all because it could result in bricking virtual Wii mode entirely.

I've been meaning to do a write up on it once I've gotten confident enough I'm not going to destroy my Wii mode, but the fact you have to go to the WiiU and plug in the HDD after booting to avoid the formatting message (maybe not anymore with the recent update) has removed some of the convenience and, to me, point from doing the whole thing.

Interestingly, I've read that you can just use an SD card and avoid the whole thing.

So:
USB for Wii U stuff.
SD for Wii stuff.

It would be convenient, methinks. And the SD card can go up to 64GB right?

Any feedback or input on this from some WiiU wiibrewer?

For the longest time I used an 8GB PNY Attache for a couple of games that I played frequently so I didn't have to worry about powering a drive. It worked great, but at some point, something happened to it, where it took a ridiculous amount of time to write to it. It still read blazingly fast, but doing an install of a game from CFG would take 8 hours. Moving files onto it from my Mac or PC was a little faster, but still painfully slow.

Thanks for the answers... hopefully the process could get more streamlined in the future... but i would love to be able to use my Hard Drive full of my Wii games on my Wii u (Finally move the Wii out of the entertainemnt center!!)
 
Hi everyone. I have a Wii with an old firmware and the HomeBrew channel installed. I want to format the Wii memory, remove all the homebrew related stuff that I've installed and install the latest firmware.
What's the best way to do this?

Does it have to be 1TB? I mean even for a large collection of games and extra stuff my 320 Western Digital passport has been more than enough for my good sized collection.

No it doesn't. But a lot of places here don't sell the smaller drives any more any way. As long as it can hold ~100 Wii games and maybe ~70 Gamecube games with room for expansion in our collection, any size is fine.

Does the drive that does not work have its own power source or is it just a USB connection? External drives apparently don't like working with the Wii U unless they are independently powered or the USB lead has a dual connection so the second connection to the Wii U powers it.

I expect you knew that anyway as you're pretty savvy about these things :) but I thought I'd mention it just in case. Other than that, have you got an existing drive you could try so that if that works you could use the new one you bought especially for the Wii U in its place?

It's a smaller USB powered one. I tried it with the regular cable and a Y cable in both ports but no dice. This is on my Wii though not my Wii U. Also it's USB 3.0 if that matters (there aren't many 2.0s sold here now).

The only drive I got to work with my Wii before was one I had ripped out of a laptop and put in a cheap external case. It is only 160GB though and I'll need something bigger. The only other one I own is a 2TB larger one with its own power source but I think that's a bit big and I use it for storing PC stuffs at the mo.

It seems like I'll need to find some old stock somewhere or get one second hand maybe...

Well at least that non-working 1TB I have has a good home as my main portable hard drive now for PC stuffs so it has a good home. I just want to be sure when I buy another one that it'll definitely work on my Wii (because it will be a waste if it doesn't).

It just seems that list is pretty outdated, and most of the model numbers I google here have sold out years ago or aren't available. I want to be able to buy one with confidence! :P

It's almost uncanny: US Wii in Europe, the 3rd party PSU, the same story. In the end, he replaced his BT module and it started working again.

I probably could try ordering a replacement from DealExtreme, those modules cost $5 (BT) and $10 (wifi) with free shipping, but I'm not very keen on the idea, considering how complicated the disassembly process is and it will probably take more than a moth for it to get here (the postal system sucks big time where I live). Malajax, I'm fairly certain (based on extensive googling!) that you have this problem as well, so it's worth a try if you don't mind unscrewing a lot of things.

Finally took the time to fix it. Replaced both the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth boards, works like a charm now. The process wasn't particularly difficult, either. Feels good to be finally playing Super Mario Galaxy properly, damn it.

i had the same problem so i had to use another loader.
 
so i am trying to boot devolution through loadmii using smash stack. loadmii boots but doesn't recognize the sd card (says it is not inserted) even though smash does. anyone able to help? does the sd card need a specific file structure?
 
I just bought a Wii U... how can I backup everything on my old soft modded Wii before transferring everything? I would like to keep everything on both my Wii and Wii U if it's possible..

edit: for the record I would still like to use the Wii as a homebrew/emulator box. I would keep the Wii U unmodded (don't want to risk anything yet)

edit 2: unless there is a way to run my gamecube discs in 1080p hdmi on wii u somehow...

backup the nand on the wii then restore after the system transfer. make sure you have bootmii installed in case re writing the nand messes up

actually you need bootmii installed to backup/restore the nand

I have a 500 Gb Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex, exactly like this one, and it works just fine. They are also available from amazon, but I'm not sure whether the 500 Gb one there is identical to mine. However, when I google my product number (9zf2a8-500), that very page comes up on top, so they must be identical. Note that the curved thing on the side of the drive in the ebay photo is actually a eSATA-USB connector (the actual drive has only a eSATA slot, comes with the connector) and it's likely removed in the amazon pictures. You can probably just buy that ebay one for $62.95 if you want a safe bet or you can buy one of the larger ones off amazon, since they are not significantly more expensive and are likely to work as well.

After performing the backup, make sure not to launch the Wii Shop Channel on your original Wii, as it will delete all the transferred WiiWare and VC games from your system!

Keep a copy of your NAND file somewhere safe in case you accidentally launch the Wii Shop Channel. (This just recently happened to me.)
 
Is it possible to do a multi-dol boot in Configurable USB Loader for games that have multiple games on the disc (e.g. Kirby's Dream Collection), so that I can boot up the main game like normal instead of having to choose which game in the collection I want to play and boot into it directly? I remember having issues using the alternate dol direct boot method with Metroid Prime Trilogy.
 
Is there any reason I couldn't use a USB flash drive instead of a hard drive to load games from? I'm thinking a 64GB flash drive would be sufficient for me as I only have about 8 games.

When USB loader first came about I tested it using a flash drive. But limitations to consider are the read speeds (you only need to achieve USB2.0 speed) and in general compatibility is lower.

Also a flash drive is not designed around constant reading so you might see a lower lifespan as a result.
 
When I try to run loadmii through smash stack it loads but doesn't recognize the sd card. When I use a flash drive, it sees the drive but when I run a program off it loadmii freezes. any help?
 
I'm probably just dumber than dumb because Google and the homebrew wiki aren't quite spelling it out for me. For right now all I'm looking to do is to backup my saves, particularly the Brawl/Mario Kart saves that can't be copied by default, on to my PC so that they will work with Dolphin. The only things on Google that I found are all from 2008/2009 so I don't particularly trust them and I can't seem to find anything on the wiki in the OP. What am I missing here?
 
How easy is it to mod a Wii?, the backwards compatible kind, black, soft mod... is it relatively idiot proof?.

What are the chances of me bricking it?, would Netflix still work after modding it?.

I have some really annoying problems with Mios Dios, I can boot games from USB just fine but the controller doesn't work at all. I read that the fix was to boot the original game and play for a while, but even when using retail GC discs the controller doesn't work. I have to boot them through NeoGamma or USB Loader GX since the disc channel doesn't work, so I'm going through Mios Dios anyway. I'm using the latest MD version and I've redownloaded and reinstalled it several times. The USB loader is version 1209, I think.

It's actually really simple and idiot proof as long as you follow the steps and don't do anything stupid like remove iOS if you don't know what they do.

I've soft modded both my Wii and the vWii in my Wii U and both are running perfectly fine.
 
Well after 9 months of modding two Wiis I finally got a hard drive to be detected by one of them!

Managed to put two games on it (SNK Classics and Mario All Stars) and then... It stops at a couple of % when I tried to put on Brawl, Baroque, Muramasa, and I assume any other game. The little /-\- spinning thingy just stops at like 2.78% or whatever. Seems to differ per game but is consistent (I tried Brawl twice). Tried CFG USB as well as GX, same diff.

Any suggestions? I've had enough will power to keep trying for 9 months but I don't think I've got much else left in me...

Edit: Reformatted the HDD partition. Made it "active". Tried Muramasa again, it got maybe 30% then did the same thing argh. It really shouldn't be this hard!
 
Sounds like your harddrive is not fully compatible. Try either different drives/enclosures or a different cios (e.g. my drive/enclosure combo works fine with hermes while using d2x results in the oddest glitches).

I know this is a bit late, but this isn't actually a link to crapware. It's just trying to get you to click the giant DOWNLOAD button, while the real downloads links are one of the three below it.

Maybe the page needs instructions on how to avoid it? I don't usually frequent those weird download/mirror style sites and it's really unusual compared to the other download links in that guide.

Doesn't matter for me anyway because I found the actual source for that download which was legit, and also I can't get a hard drive going so bleh.

I meant something written in the guide itself more like "download link here, but click the text which says [blah blah], not the big green download button" or something to that effect. The GAF guide has a good trustworthy rep and as far as I remember the other download links are pretty clean and link to the original source; if that mirror is the only choice some signposting would be handy, particularly for people new to this kind of thing. It is course, a guide even for the really really dumb, hehe. As it is it just seems out of step with the rest of the guide.

I finally fixed it. What probably happened was that I had messed around with it way too much over the years not knowing what I was doing, so a lot of files were messed up/incompatible with each other. So I backed up the saves, dug up the old NAND backup I did a few years ago when everything was as fresh as possible and followed the GAF tutorial. The controller still didn't work at first, but now I was able to boot a game through the disc channel, and now everything works. Now to start rippin'.
