The reason why people are saying not to update is that 3.4 includes the 'revision' to the Nintendo TOS, which states they can stealth update your unit, which could eventually break HBC.

So after getting a 2 gig SD card, I successfully installed the Homebrew Channel. But..now what? Aside from running some emulators, and importing, anything else that there is to be excited about? How well does the mplayer stuff work (and since there's multiple versions, which one is the best?)
 
Speaking of VBA GX, I updated my VBAGX (haven't updated by firmware to 3.4 or anything like that) and now save states are all wonky. The wiki for it says that old saves might be messed up with this new version, but..... they're messed up even if I delete my .sav and .sgm files for a game and create new ones. The new save states won't load.


Anyone who has VBA GX do NOT update to the newest version of 1.0.5
 
So if I'm on 3.3U and I install the HBC and all that, will I still get access to the Wii Shop? I have like 4500 points and I dont want it just sitting there if I cant access the shop without any repercussions.

Just run the Wii Shop installer that is on Wii Brew

You can use homebrew installers to update the Wii Shop and Mii Channels without installing the homebrew-breaking shit that Nintendo sent with them.
 
Okay cool. Having a problem installing HBC on my 3.3U Wii though...need to know what I'm doing wrong. The Twilight hack runs, I don't think I'm installing HBC right though. I got boot.dol in the root of my SD card, "apps" and "wiiload" directory...

It bunch of code was on my screen then it just ultimately said couldn't read boot.elf or something.

mplayer works really well, usually. Plays a variety of formats like avi, wmv, mp4. From the SD card or USB.

It doesn't seem to like large files though, I've tried to play some 1GB+ files and it crashed. Maybe that was just the videos I played though, you just have to try. The average 350mb half hour TV show should be no problem at all.

And AFAIK, use the latest version.

What version of HBC are you trying to install? You should be using ver0.1beta1 of the Twilight Hack and installing HBC beta 9.
 
So how does one update from firmware 3.1 to 3.3U? (I don't know much at all about the Wii, go easy on me... it's a friend's)

No no.. I've already hax0red his system and stuff. I just want to get his firmware up to the latest that isn't damaging. Or is it even worth it to bother? I don't use the Wii at all so I am just assuming you'd get better stuff like you do with PS3/PSP firmware updates.

Just install the Wii Shop updater and the Mii Channel updater via HBC and he'll be able to go online and buy stuff. Then just use GeckoOS to bypass any disc-based firmware upgrades.

Rent Wii Music and install pre-October 3.3U/E update

Edit: Then install the updates given above. I'm not sure if you can update them right away.
 
so i upgraded my wii shop channel via the updater and it does not work

it just goes back to the wii channel.. what should i do
 
My wii is currently offline and I don't really know which FW I have.

Can I update HBC first with its own "updater"? Then, will it give the option to update "parts" of the newest firmware?

Okay, I have the post-October 3.3U update, but haven't done 3.4 yet. What can I do? I've never done homebrew on the Wii before, so please point me to the right place to start out. I've got TP for the GC, but I can borrow the Wii version if I need it.

Just hacked my Wii this morning, loving being able to play DivX movies on TV off a USB pendrive.

What essential apps are there? And which is the best media player, I'm using MPlayerWii now.

Another useful thing would be a nice file manager that works with both USB and SD.

I did update my HBC to Beta 9 and IOS36. I've also downloaded the updates for IOS51, WiiShop and Mii Channel but when I tried updating, it hangs during the "DOS" screens.

Can't I download those updates to a PC, copy them on the SD card and update it manually?

Geexbox is a good media player, it just got ported over to the Wii so it needs some work but I prefer it over mplayer

If you want a file manager download SD Explorer, its simple and effective, I am not sure if it works with USB though (it would probably depend if it was "mounted" or not)
 
GeckoOS is also an essential app for playing games outside of your region and to bypass firmware installation on discs.

could it be that nintendo's servers were slow at the time? i did the procedure under hbc b8 (except for the mii channel which i skipped) using mattew_8's version of muzer's installer and everything went fine, alas it did take some time during the download phase.

Yes the downloads took incredibly long for me too. Just leave it up for awhile and see what happens.
 
Any advice on playing DVDs on a hacked Wii?

My understanding is I have to install DVDx then use a compatible media player. It does allow reading of proper DVDs, not just reading data off DVD-Rs right?

Yes you will need to install dvdx, then use a media player to access the dvd drive

As far as I know you play retail dvd's just fine, I think Mplayer dvdlib edition works good as it lets you select either track or menu but you would have to look as there are multiple versions of mplayer (I think a new dvd specific one just was released)

He's a bit of a worrier, and is nervous that their will be ramifications if he uses the Gecko to play Tatsunoku Vs. Capcom.

According to Nintendo yes it is illegal to play games from another region. According to international laws, it's completely legal.

Several countries struck down attempts to prevent the sale of modchips because it was decided that use of modchips in order to bypass region coding was fine.

GeckoOS does not affect your system whatsoever; at the worst, it'll eventually stop working.

Any homebrew browsers out there for the Wii that run the latest Flash versions? Stupid Wii Opera Browser sucks. I just want to watch Hulu on my TV, is that so much to ask?
 
Just got my first import game in the mail today. This is the first time I ever imported anything. I'd just like to say thanks to all those who made homebrew possible and who made region-free possible. I'd also like to thank all those on GAF who helped get me started with homebrew.

Their Naruto fansubs end on January 15th, 2009, fyi. Viz is putting subbed episodes 1 week after airing in Japan and you can pay to see them immediately after air on Crunchy Roll (or shortly after airing).

I'll probably try the region free hacks for Capcom vs Tatsunoku.

Yeah I know. I'm cool with it as long as someone else is doing it legally, in this case CrunchyRoll.

Tatsunoko vs Capcom will be my second import next week :D
