GAF Wii Homebrew thread: Homebrew, emulators, USB disc installs! Easy tutorial!

OK, stupid noob question(s) here. I've been trying to figure them out through searching this thread and Google, but haven't found any answers yet.

1) For Ultimate USB Loader 7.4, what does the "Patch Game" option do?

2) Also, what's the difference between the "system default" and "game default" video options?

3) What is the VIDTV patch used for?

Finally, I've had great luck ripping and playing all of my NA games on my NA Wii (using Ultimate USB Loader), but I've been unable to get my one PAL game to load. What options am I supposed to choose to make it load?

IIRC Game Default = if the game supports 16:9, do 16:9. System Default = Wii system setting.

Hey Stump, a while ago you posted a link to get the covers but it was a broken link requiring registration, do you have a fixed one by any chance?

Appreciate it, thanks anyway :)

It's a patch mostly for Japanese games. It makes Japanese text work in Illust Logic + Colourful Logic for me (my only Japanese game).

I haven't used Ultimate enough to help here, but Configurable USB Loader plays all my imports just fine, except the few games that don't work with any USB Loader (e.g., Mortal Kombat: Armageddon). Which game isn't working for you?

Wow, I've wanted to do a simple noob thing like to move the apps on the Homebrew Channel (ie moving the USB Loader as the first app to appear in the list) and I found out that I don't know how to do that :lol

I've looked into the Wiibrew faq with no luck, can anybody help me?

Couldn't you just drag them into the order you want on your PC?

My USB Loader stopped reading my HDD suddenly. It was working yesterday but today when I go into the USB Loader, I get this error:

"ERROR: Could not initialize USB subsystem (ret = -1)"

Anyone know how to fix this?

Maybe your HDD is corrupted? Have you tried plugging it into a PC and opening up WBFS Manager and see if the games are there? If it's not corrupted, maybe you have another device plugged into the other USB port on the Wii; you should remove it if there is and see if the Wii will recognize the HDD again.

They show in alphabetical order in my HBC, am I doing something wrong then?
I mean, it's not like I can grab 'em and move 'em with A+B like the Wii Menu channels...

This isn't a complete fix, but a nice workaround. The order is alphabetical based on the app name. You can edit the app name by modifying the meta.xml file for the app. Just open it in any text editor (e.g., Notepad) and change the line that looks like:

<name>SD/USB Loader 1.5_cfg</name>

(This is the Configurable USB Loader's name)

Add some underscores or spaces to the front of the name and it will appear at the front of the list (not sure on those characters, I only tried it by sticking an 'a' in front, so if it doesn't work, use the letter a). For a more uniform approach, start each app name with a number in either single or double digits and it will automatically sort them that way.

Wasn't corrupt but seemed to like it when I switched to a different USB port. I thought I had it in the same port though. I had disconnected it to rename some of the gmaes with WBFS manager when I encountered the problem.

Thanks, I'll definitely do that!
I'm happy I wasn't just being a complete idiot on the matter :lol

I am trying to play little king´s story on my nstc Wii using Gecko os 1.9, but I can´t use the rebooter option... it gives me "error loading menu".

I am running on offcial firmware 4.0 with cios36 rev10 btw.

EDIT: also, do I have to format a partition of my HDD to use usb loader? It's father's so I am a bit scared of using it and somehow delete his backup... :/

not all games works, when you format it, everything is gone obviously, make sure the partition u format has no data in it

I know... what about the Gecko OS? My main problem remains : I can´t use the rebooter on any games, yet they all launch normally.

Hey guys, how safe is installing preloader? I wish to have somekind of bricking-protection... or should I wait for bootmii ? I do have FW 4.0U BTW

BootMii will provide a lot better protection than Preloader, but if you just want something now, then it should be safe to go ahead. Just be sure to follow instructions carefully, as Preloader can brick your Wii.

Why do you need to use the rebooter option? If you can launch the game manually with Gecko OS, then just use that.

Doesn't the rebooter removes the update warning for good? What does it do actually, I honestly don´t know... :p

Bah, looks like you need a wireless network to downgrade the IOS, and it won't work with the USB adapter. Boo.

I believe the rebooter just reboots your Wii in an import friendly manner (depending on what options you set). This will only last until the next time the system returns to the Wii Menu (e.g., going into a game and backing out via the Home button will disable it). I believe it also allows you to copy protected save games and so on.

Hence, you might as well just use the launch game button to play your imports. I think the only difference is what appears in the log on the message board.

cIOS rev 11 should be out soon and will apparently fix this.

Ok then,no problem then, thanks alot! :D

is BootMii going to fix the virgin 4.0 issue or is it going to need another exploit from a different team in conjunction with it?

So, question:

I got Metroid Prime Wii controls. The game was in Japanese so my solution was to rip it, install this patch I found online, then reburn it on a DVD-R. It worked fine, but the loading times were worse than with the original, which was worse than the GCN version...

So I decided to install the USB loader. I upgraded my IOS at the same time, and I tried ripping the English-patched DVD-R I had. The rip went fine and it loaded up, but once I loaded my game it green screened and restarted the Wii. So then I tried to rip the original disc and I got the same thing. Then I tried running it off the DVD-R and it gives me some error in Japanese on load. Same thing with the original disc.

So now I can't run it at at all. I'm thinking it was the IOS update that fubar'd it, but I dunno. Anyone have any ideas? My ideal scenario would be getting the English-patched ISO I made to launch from the USB loader, since that would improve load times over the DVD-R I made. Worst case I'd just like to be able to run the Japanese original again. Halp?

By the way, all of the other US NTSC originals I have ripped work. I'm running 3.2U, and have preloader installed (whatever that does?)

In marcan's own words:
marcan@hackmii.com said:
* No new problems expected with BootMii, other than needing a new exploit as mentioned above.

Yes, solutions are being worked on to run code via games and to install HBC. Sheesh.
They have also implied they already have other exploits, but they don't want to release them yet due to the massive help that will give the pirates.

I heard that the Japanese version of MP doesn't work with USB Loader period, so I don't think it's going to help.

Well what's weird is now it won't even run off either disc I have. More specifically, I can get into the game and select which slot to load my file from, that all works fine (even with the USB loader) but when it actually goes to load the gameplay is when it crashes. On the loader it green screens and on the discs it gives me some message in Japanese (even on the English patched one)

I'm kinda bummed because I had the English patch working fine but the loading times were terrible compared to the GCN version. Oh well :(

Did anybody try Dragon Quest Swords on the USB loader?
Are the loading times better? I found the game for (really) cheap but I've heard that the multiple loading screens are almost unbearable.

I don't own it to try it, but the compatibility list says that it works. I would assume load times must be sped up. The only case where this wouldn't happen is if the developers programmed a fixed delay into the load screen, which there is no real reason to do, unless you are displaying info to be read in the meantime or something.

OK so i'm testing out game genie on this thing but have no idea where to put the .cht files. Which folder(s) do they go in?

I was planning on use the 2nd method which invovles Waninkoko's WAD Installer and I had no clue which link to click on there. My other question is with the newest firmware on the Wii can I dload hbc?

Okay, so I sent my Wii in for repairs and I removed my HBC in anticipation of this, but now I have it back and I can't put the channel back on from my SD card because I'm on version 4.0. What do I do to get my beloved channel back?

I hate to say this, but I have been saving this PNG for some time now.......

Wait for an exploit, waiting is all you can do now.

Oh, and hoping of course. Good luck.

Sadly the ultimate USB loader doesn't seem to work with Klonoa. Every time I try it, it just boots whatever disc is in the drive.

Luckily, load times on Klonoa aren't bad at all, so it's not much of a problem.

Is the ultimate usb loader still the best bet in regards to compatability/useability?

Make sure it is the one based on 1.4. Works just fine for me!

Well, Wingus, it's not like I really had a choice. If I didn't take it off the Wii then Nintendo would find it and make me pay for my repairs.

Actually, thank your lucky stars that Nintendo isn't implementing proper checks to see if the HBC is on there. There is still plenty of proof that you did have the HBC installed if all you did was move it to the SD card. I guess it's good for all of us that Nintendo isn't checking the play log and tickets yet.

Hey dudes. I'm not sure if anyone can help me, but I've had the Homebrew Channel installed for a pretty while. I had imported Tatsunoko vs. Capcom and played it using the Gecko OS application. Now that I upgraded to the new firmware and downloaded the latest Gecko OS...I can still use The Homebrew Channel and it boots up the game. However, once it's past the whole "warning" announcement in regards to the Wii Remote and Jacket, it loads up with some Japanese words that transition into the next, but it remains on a black screen with some Japanese words on it. Is there a problem? Am I loading it up correctly? Any tips?
