GAF Wii Homebrew thread: Homebrew, emulators, USB disc installs! Easy tutorial!

Wow, cover flow z is pretty awesome. All he needs to do is allow us to config it to start off with say... flow z + 3 rows and it'll be perfect!

I just installed bootmii and none of my two SD cards work with it. But at least it seems that it installed successfully. Weird that Kingston cards don't work with it.

EDIT: Ok I found an old 128MB SD card I had. Works fine. Currently backing up my NAND to one of the cards that I couldn't boot with.

Uh, I think the Wii's NAND is around 512MBs. Definitely won't fit in the 128MB card.

Can somebody link me to a post(s) or a guide that will help me upgrade my 3.2U to 4.0 while keeping Homebrew, ability to purchase VC/WiiWare etc without the need of Twilight Princess.
Here's a guide:

  • Turn on your Wii.
  • Go to "Wii Options...Wii Settings"
  • On the third page of settings select "Wii System Update"
  • Follow the prompts
Sorry to be facetious, but it's that simple. Nintendo doesn't stop the HBC from working in its update, it just stops it being installed. If you want to use homebrew like USB Loader in future, that's a different question and there are other tasks you should perform first.

You mean Gridflow z for cfgUL, right? The options will be in the release version which should hit in a few hours.

He said he was backing up to one of the other cards. Just using the 128MB one to run BootMii.

So I just checked with BootMii, and it says it would have to install as an IOS not in boot2.

My ideal situation would be normal Wii usage + region changing + media player ce.

As I want to be able to update my Wii and purchase Wiiware games in the future, is it worth me looking for an older Wii console for boot2 over an IOS install?
I don't entirely understand the difference :/

Finally got around to getting my Wii updated.

I fire up the Homebrew channel and update it and install BootMii to boot2.

My problem is, I used a freshly formatted SD card to get this done, so now I have a homebrew channel that boots to a background of just bubbles. Where can I get the files needed to put on the SD card to make this work?

So I'm using CFG USBloader and it's, well, awesome.

But the problem is, I can never get it to go to the theme I want immediately. It will do it when I go to options and scroll over to the theme, but I'm unsure how to make it be that one from default. It will only save options for specific games, but for the USBloader as a whole.

I have a virgin wii 4.0, how do i get the homebrew channel and a usbloader installed?

A simple step by step guide is prefered.

this is what i did:

Unplug all Gamecube accessories (controllers/mem cards)

Follow this guide perfectly. Don't forget the final 3 downloads at the end.

After that you should have HBC installed and working properly.

cfg. USB Loader is a good one. Download it here. Put the stuff from inSDroot on your sd card and run it in HBC.

do you already have an hd for your wii?

that guide doesn't help him at all.

this guide says you're fucked if you have 4.0, that's why i asked in the first place.

thanks nads i will use the guide you posted!

edit:

do you already have an hd for your wii?

no im going to order a 320GB seagate freeagent go tonight because it's on sale. i've read it's the most reliable drive that doesnt require an ac plug to avoid spindown. any objections to this drive?

theme = something*

*name on the folder containing the theme

you have to edit the config file on your sd card

edit: a second late

I guess I'll use this time to say thanks to everyone in this thread. Everything ran smoothly for me.

OK, guys. Mejilan and I have been discussing updating Stump's tutorial to include the latest information so we have a simple place to go to for all these questions again. We plan to have it updatable by a few people so we can keep it up to date (and hopefully restricted to known users to avoid the need to monitor sabotage). The only problem is we don't know where or how to host it.

The choices I've considered so far are going for a free Wiki that everyone can update easily (Wikia), a free Wiki with ads where we specify who can update (Wikidot) or a personal webspace (like Stump's) which we manually update (although we don't have one).

Does anybody have any ideas on the best way to set this up? I've never done anything like this before, so I'm a little lost, but the need for it is clear, so any help will be appreciated.

Do you have a link to coverflow z? I can't seem to find it.

Thanks

Edit: Found it. Looks awesome.

We should try to keep it simple. I think having everything in the OP is the best thing to do or at least have links to other specific posts with information in OP.

The problem is that people get 'tl;dr' and/or 'I'm too dumb to work this out' syndrome. Just look at how many times we get the virgin Wii question followed by the how do I partition my hard drive type questions. The beauty of Stump's tutorial is it gives you everything you need by a connected series of links, with each page only giving you one real step in the chain. With this, we can just link everyone who asks questions to this one FAQ/Tutorial and it'll all be good.

I was thinking about that. We could do something like Stump's tutorial using forum posts too, but it will probably be messy.

Can someone check if rev12 fixes the USB/LAN Adapter problem?

It does, but it apparently also slows USB Loaders back down to 6x speed, or something like that.

Rev 13 supposedly comes out tomorrow.

Using CFG USBloader, how do you add music?

I get the feeling this is stupidly simple, but I can't figure it out.

music = filename

i also think placing music.mp3 in your sd:/usb-loader does the job as well. i haven't tried it yet.

Grab your favorite mp3 and call it music.mp3. Drop it into your /usb-loader folder (together wtih config.txt and titles.txt). Speaking of config.txt, add the entry "music = 1" (sans quotation marks) to the config.txt if it's not already there. If it is, switch the 0 to a 1.

Ahh! v31 is out of beta, and he's added the option of being able to start in flow-z by default, and to determine how many rows are displayed. For my tv, flow-z with 3 rows is ideal. Brilliant.

On my buddy's Wii, if I want to update the HBC to 1.03 am I stuck with the Hombrew Browser option? Because he can't connect this console to the net...

Use the BootMii installer.

Yeah? read the op.

I kinda got lost in all that info. But where are the instructions on how to get the 4.0 to work correctly? I already have a hacked 3.2 but I'd like to be able to use a bigger sd card with the 4.0 update.

Upgrade to 4.0 and chuck BootMii on your memory card. Read the instructions, follow the instructions, celebrate.

Okay, I want to join all of the modded Wii fun, but I've got a bit of a hitch before I start - I gotta send my Wii into Nintendo so I can have it repaired (it's got graphical artifacts, so I wager the GPU is fucked).

I figure they're going to change the motherboard or something maybe, so:

- my personal Miis will no longer be editable/will be locked
- they'll change the hardware (my Wii is a launch Wii) to some newer revision that is less exploitable

Are there any Wiis that can't be set up for homebrew? Is there anyway to unlock my Miis if they become uneditable?

so a 4.0 never hacked before wii, is SOL i take it?
No you can use bannerbomb to hack a never before hacked 4.0 Wii.

captmcblack said:

Unless they install a never before released firmware, you can set up homebrew on any Wii right now.

Hair-pulling frustration.

I followed all the required steps of upgrading from 3.2.

After upgrading to 4.0, my homebrew channel will not load, from BootMii NOR the system menu.

What the hell gives?

Edit: Figured it out. Anyone else having this problem, use the bannerbomb method to reuse HackMii and uninstall the old HBC and reinstall the new!

I PM'd you a bannerbomb tutorial. Hopefully you can get your HBC up and running again.

Alright, how the hell do I get that awesome Flo-Z GUI installed? I can't find it anywhere.
flow-z is a mode of Configurable USB Loader. After installing it, edit the config.txt file and add the following lines:

gui_style = flow-z
gui=start

config.txt is located in two places at sd:/usb-loader and sd:/apps/usbloader. It will read the one in sd:/usb-loader first and then the one at sd:/apps/usbloader only if you are using HBC (or another launcher) to launch it.

So if you use HBC, edit sd:/apps/usbloader/config.txt. Otherwise edit sd:/usb-loader/config.txt.

Also, look through README-cfg for more notes on how you can configure the Loader because many of the options are highly useful.

Yeah, bannerbomb to the bootmii installer to get hbc running again, same thing happened to me.

wow. installing bootmii was almost too easy. hbc just asked if i wanted to upgrade and also install bootmii... took 2 seconds. now i'm backing up my nand to sd. not bad.

Thanks! As per my above eidt, I found it, but thanks a ton anyways! :)

This has happened to a bunch of people - my HBC didn't quit working from 3.2 to 4.0 - why did yours? I have a launch Wii, maybe that's the difference?

Also looking for what has changed in HBC 1.0.3, cIOS rev12 and WAD Manager 1.4 - my stuff isn't broken, so I'm hesitant to "fix" it, heh.
