GAF Wii Homebrew thread: Homebrew, emulators, USB disc installs! Easy tutorial!

After my Wii died and Nintendo replaced it with an LU64 I went looking. Picked up a Japanese Wii cheap, haxored it up, and now I have my ideal box:

  • Bootmii installed
  • Nand backed up and saved in several places
  • 'safe' 4.0 system menu
  • Preloader installed
  • Autoboots to System menu after 3 seconds (so I get to see Bootmii, but not have to press anything)
  • PAL System Menu base (for my PAL GC games)
  • NTSC video (via Anyregion changer)
  • Region free for games and channels
  • No system menu music
  • No health warning (but the bluetooth syncs up during boot so I have pointer immediately, unlike before with starfall when it took a second)
  • USB loader set up with a nice forwarder channel
  • Full access to the Japanese Wii shop, already purchased Dracula X and Famicom Castlevania III, in cheap yen!

It can play all my Wii and Gamecube games of every region, NTSC for Virtual Console so no PAL borders, and is brick proof!

Now if only I could acess the USA and PAL shops as well, but I believe you have to delete/format your account every time you change region now.

But can you save in Mr. Driller Drill Land while keeping a PAL menu/memory card manager. See, far from perfect.

Yes, but it's much quicker, as is up and running as soon as channels are visible.

Well no. And the fact that I have to change the video mode to PAL in ARC to run 50Hz only PAL GameCube games, and then back to NTSC to run my Japanese VC games.

Actually, I might go back to Japanese system menu and see if that can be run fine in 50Hz for the sake of the odd PAL Gamecube game.

After that you should have HBC installed and working properly.

cfg. USB Loader is a good one. Download it here. Put the stuff from inSDroot on your sd card and run it in HBC.

So I'm using a WD My Passport Essential as my storage and it's been flawless so far.

I've got two questions now.

First, I have all my VC/WiiWare games on a SD card. Can those live on the same card as the homebrew stuff?

Second, can someone point me to a guide so I can create channels for certain games?

OKay, we've started our new tutorial to hopefully fix a lot of these problems. Currently it's only got Homebrew Channel and USB Loader (without the IOS249 stuff as rev13 is out and I haven't tried it yet), but it can be checked out and feedback would be great.

It's called GAF's Wii Homebrew Tutorial and can be found at http://gwht.wikidot.com.

You have to join in order to edit pages, which is done via the sidebar currently. We should have something equating to Stump's tutorial in a day or two hopefully.

Wait what, it's already a hacked 4.0 rev12 (and the "old" preloader).
It's just that he has HBC 1.02 (or .01 don't remember) and he wanted to update it to .03. but can't use the HBB.
You sure that's the only way?

You don't have to install bootmii if you don't want to, the new HBC is just one of the options in the installer.

It has links to WAD files for each game. Install them using WAD Manager and it'll create channels for games that trigger your USB Loader and launch the game. I tested it with Super Mario Galaxy and Big Brain Academy and both worked fine.
 
Okay, I'm about to box my Wii up and send it to the Big N.

So there isn't anything Nintendo can send back to me that I can't unlock for homebrew and such? Any locked-out DVD drive models, motherboards revisions or things like that?

LU64+ Wiis are troublesome right now, but apparently rev13 and rev13b of cIOS249 fix that, so it should be OK.

Edit: On that point, this is a big problem for our tutorial right now. Is there anybody here who has a virgin Wii with a serial number of LU64 or above that is willing to do some tests for us? Finding information on these Wii types is troublesome. The serial number is located on a sticker at the base (when in the stand) of the Wii near the bevelled corner.

should be able to get them automatically in future releases. for now we will just have to have the front covers, which is fine by me.
 
Does HBC no longer automatically update? I'm on 1.0.1 and have a connection but there's no prompt.

Also I thought MPlayerCE is getting YouTube support. Is it hidden or still under development (it's mentioned in the most recent changelog and was in that video).

It does automatically update on 3.2 Wiis, but I think something in 4.0 blocks the auto-update feature. Can anybody prove me wrong (I really would like to know if a 4.0 Wii can update HBC via the Internet).

Mine updated just last week on 4.0, it was even nice enough to ask me if I wanted to install bootmii when it loaded.

Mine updates on 4.0. It only works for me whenever I have WiiConnect24 on though.
 
Interesting. I doubt it's a 'when it was installed' thing. Saint Gregory, you used the Yafaze tutorial IIRC. Are you still on that old HBC version or did you install the new one for BootMii? What version are you on now?

And maybe it is the WC24 thing. For those where it won't auto-update, do you see the network icon in the bottom right flashing then turning on when you start HBC?

Nevermind, on 3.2 and after rebooting HBC a few times it worked.

I told it not to install BootMii because I wasn't sure where to install it. How do I trigger it to ask me again?
 
Hi guys, how reliable is cIOS38 rev13 & rev13b?

I read some of the loaders had to add some lines of code in order to work with rev13. Well USBLoader GX and Configurable added that. But then rev13b came out and supposedly addressed that. Now, some people say that their are having problems with launching new games after restart.

I'm on rev12, I should stick on that for now?

Just get the hackmii installer, you can run it from the HBC.
 
I've been trying to get Punch out: Wii to work and every time I try to play it, I get a "Error: # 002". Anybody know a way around this?
 
I've been thinking about installing Preloader, but Wiibrew says that 0.29 is the last version. Will there be a problem if Nintendo releases new firmware in the future? I don't want to have to go through the hassle of removing Preloader and/or unbricking my Wii.

cIOS rev 13b works around that I believe, plus USB loaders are also being updated to account for it as well.

Update your Wii from a recent game in your region. It likely needs IOS55. If you have installed cIOS38 rev 13, install rev13b, or switch to Configurable USB Loader.

As for rev 13/13b, they both mean you have to power cycle your Wii when changing games. This is a well-known bug with the release. rev 13 will only work with a handful of loaders due to a slight change, rev13b fixes that, but also apparently breaks a few games (although this game breaking might be rumour based on the forced-reboot bug).

Your best situation might be to go back to rev 10, or one of the Hermes' IOSes (if you want LAN adapter) for the time being.

If Nintendo attacks preloader, the only thing that will likely happen is removal or replacement of the IOS effectively disabling and/or deleting Preloader. I don't see the point of installing it, though. Is the health screen or Wii Menu background music really that annoying that you want to remove/change them?
 
New exploit by Comex (same dude who created bannerbomb). It uses Smash Bros. stage editor to load .elf file, so Nintendo can't do shit about it. They don't patch their games so it's a pretty good exploit.

I do not think it's out yet.

Smash Hack has a nice ring to it :p. Nintendo will be able to do stuff about it. They will block it in the same way they blocked the Twilight Hack (maybe taking 3 or 4 tries like last time). Then they'll need to find another hack in another game (which likely won't be too hard).

Edit: Oops, missed the fact that the hack itself is on the SD card. Yes, this will be hard for Nintendo to fix.

Yeah they'll probably find a way, but it will take a long time for them to actually do something about it. I believe they do have other hacks though.
 
Any recommendations on video settings for VBA GX on a widescreen monitor/TV? I find the default settings cut off some of the image. Right now I'm using:

Rendering: Unfiltered
Scaling: Lock to Aspect Ratio
Zoom: 90%
 
I'm trying to install the IOS249 so I can use a USB loader.
I tried the cIOS36 installer from Stumps tutorial, but it fails with error -2011.
I tried following that "ultimate" tutorial on yafuze but it throws an error when trying to run DowngradeIOS35.

I'm on 3.3U, possibly with Oct 23 update I can't remember, it's near launch NTSC-U. Installed Bootmii in boot2, HBC etc fine.
I just wanna run games of all regions from a HDD if I can. I'm not sure if I need all those wads and cIOS's on that yafuze guide or not.
Any help please?

That's what I'm using. Seems to be the best option.
 
Sooooooo I just got the request to update HBC and bootmii and all that. All installed! Bootmii is instantaneous and the NAND backup didn't need to reformat my SD card. Plus I have no bad blocks on my NAND.

I rock!

For bootmii or the system menu? system menu themes have been out for a while, use the softmii tweaks tool.

And yes, you can use it without having to install softmii or cioscorp or any of the other crapola in that package.
