GAF Wii Homebrew thread: Homebrew, emulators, USB disc installs! Easy tutorial!

I can't seem to find one, but why not use HackMii installer to install the lastest HBC?

Everything is working perfectly, except that I still have homebrew .8 or somthing. When I try to update it within the HBC I get an error. So I figured just doing it via a WAD install would be the easiest.

Ok. So I have a PAL 4.0 Wii with no homebrew software. I want to be able to play NTSC region Wii and GCN games. Can anyone point me to a guide? Is there any chance at all my Wii will get bricked?

If you have the homebrew channel installed already, you can delete the hacked Twilight save file if that's what you mean. So when you start up Zelda again, you'll have three fresh files to play on.

I assume you're asking about the Twilight Hack? It should be safe to get rid of it. I don't think it's actually required to run homebrew once you have the HBC installed.

Follow the tutorial below to install HBC again. There is no reason it shouldn't work, unless you did a cIOScorp install or something else as stupid previously (if you did, try upgrading your Wii first).

Yes, unless you use the Twilight hack and don't back up your save. Just use the tutorial below and you won't even risk losing the save.

It's fun. All three of you require the same answer:

Wii get!

Thanks to the excellent GAF guide, I installed the HBC with no problems.

It's a Japanese language (Taiwan region) Wii with firmware 3.4J

I put Anyregion changer and Gecko OS into the apps folder on my SD card

Unfortunately, it looks like I have to downgrade from 3.4J to 3.2 firmware before anyregion changer will work

So I tried to do that within anyregion changer (there is a menu option to downgrade to 3.2), but it needs a network connection to work..

Guess who doesn't have wifi or a usb network adapter?

So tomorrow I will head into town and search for a USB network adapter - then I'll be able to downgrade to 3.2, change my language settings and then put a USB loader onto my Wii

The main reason I bought the wii was for a media centre. I'll start doing all of that after I get the USB loader working :D

Excellent guide - thanks everyone

After reading the tuturial and the last six pages of this thread, here is where I am getting a little confused:

From this post:

You don't need to go to 4.0. I suggest you don't.

You don't NEEEEEEEEED to "downgrade" anymore! There is literally no reason to stay on <=3.2 now.

I'm currently at 3.2U with HBC installed. Maybe in the future but right now I don't care about making back-ups of my games or playing them from an external harddrive. But I do still want to have access to the shop channel. That's where the confusion from the above posts come in. I also just picked up Tiger Woods and it's wanting me to update as well in order to play it. So I'm thinking I have to:

*First update HBC and install Bootmii when prompted (right now I'm only interested in using Bootmii as a recovery tool)
*Install GeckoOS (to play games without updating and for imports)
*Install IOS 249 (for possible future use with USB loader)

But in order to access the shop channel, will I still have to update to 4.0U?

What does "scrubbing" do ? And can HD LOader play scrubbed games?

Scrubbing gets rid of all the 'dummy' data manufactures put on to fill out the disc. All the HD loaders can play scrubbed games.

Playing through USB loader is the same as playing through disc? How about the transfer data speed? I could consider jump in, since my lens take forever picking a game (just 1 year old Wii...I...guess I play too much)

So can Gecko OS region free my GameCube games too?

Furthermore, does anyone play their NTSC GC games their Wii through VGA ? Does it work ?

What I'd want to achieve is being able to play GC games on my LCD monitor, because it's a hassle to have to switch back and forth to ol' grandma's cathodic TV everytime I want some last-gen goodness.

GC games currently don't work through VGA cable, because I'm in PAL-land, and no GC game is 480p enabled here.
However if I could do just that with NTSC GC games, I'd be willing to repurchase some of my favorites in their US version.

Yes and I'm not really sure.

The only Gamecube game to have any problem with GeckoOS is Naruto Gekitou Ninja Taisen 4. I don't know if it works with 1.9 though.

Yes it's just like playing off a disc. I believe it's a little bit faster on load times.

I'm on 3.2E and can still access the shop channel, you just need to update it using Wii System Channels Updater (http://wiibrew.org/wiki/WiiSCU). You might have to install/upgrade IOS files included to get it working as well.

I've got another question regarding the USB loader. I haven't tried using it yet, but I'm curious how/if it works with Gecko OS. More specifically, I'd like to be able to run Brawl off of a USB drive and still use the Brawl+ codes. Is that possible?

Most USB Loader mods have support for GeckoOS cheat codes. I recommend Configurable USB Loader v31c.
Alright cool, that's the one I've got. And it should work even if it's like 1000 lines of code?

I'm not big on cheats, so I haven't tested it so extremely.
I would imagine that it if worked with GeckoOS, it'll work with an appropriate USB Loader mod.

I suggest you do upgrade to keep access to the Wii Shop. And your upgrade process is good. Asparagus' method will work as well, but that app is kind of dangerous and has bricked many Wiis. There is no real need to follow that procedure unless you want to pirate stuff in the future.

It is almost the same (games won't appear by name in the play log and a handful of games don't work right now). Data actually transfers faster from the drive than from the disc. This lowers many games' load times and actually fixes stuttering in some games like HotD.

As Mejilan is saying, the Ocarina stuff in Configurable USB Loader is pretty much the same code that is in Gecko. I have seen a limit mentioned that may be around 1000, but just check the readme-cfg and set up your config.txt appropriately and your cheats should work.

I use a VGA box with component cables on my PAL Wii. I just tested this, and NTSC Gamecube games with 480p support played via Gecko OS with the holding of B at start... work and display in 480p.

The screen that allows you to change to progressive is in 480i, so you will have to do this blind...hold B for 20 seconds when starting, then push A and wait.

I found a USB network adapter in the local store and hooked it up.

Hooked it all up when I got home and then jumped in the shower. Whilst in there, my gf went to 'system update'. I now have a Jap Wii running 4.0J firmware (facepalm.gif)

This is what I want to get running :
* USB Loader GX. I already have Geexbox working fine, which is 90% of my reason for buying the wii in the first place. Having a USB loader working would be awesome. My first question is: Can I run USB Loader GX on 4.0J firmware?

*To get anyregion changer to work, I have to downgrade to 3.4 firmware. This would be nice so I can have English menus, but not really a deal breaker for me.

I understand that I have to install a custom IOS so I went back to the GAF guide and follwed the steps for 'Installing Hermes' IOS 222/223 for use with USB Loader'.

I run CMDVDX34v from the HBC and select the first option Downgrade IOS35. I got a network error the first time and when I try after that it displays 'Failed to add title. Maybe you already ran this?'

I try PatchMii but it freezes the Wii. I have to hold the power button down on the Wii for about 5-6 seconds for it to power off. Has done this 10+ times in a row. I already have DVDX installed from when I set up the HBC but when I try to run it now the program displays 'Please select Patchmii install from the menu when prompted'. Then I get a net init failed -116 error.

I then loaded the wad manager and installed IOS35 with no trouble. Then when I try to install CIOSv7 it displays
>>Installing ticket...ERROR! (ret = -2011)

Can anyone help me out? I've just spent hours searching online but haven't had any success. I didn't want to bump this thread again and be a whiney prick - but I'm all out of ideas...

Quick Q's, it's been a while since I messed with a Wii and a friend wants the HBC for the movie player:

- The Wii has SDHC card support now?
- I can use the BlastBomb exploit to install HBC on the latest firmware?
- If I install the latest firmware on my Wii which already has HBC, everything will be fine?
- Best movie player? (I use MPlayerCE currently myself)

Thanks :)

I tried deleting HBC, thinking that I could just go back to the beginning and start the process all over again. Bad move.. Now I can't install HBC on the updated 4.0J firmware.

I should have quit while I was ahead! Geexbox was running fine before but i wanted more..

HBC should install OK via BannerBomb. What problem are you having exactly?

As for installing IOS222 or 223, try installing IOS249 rev13 (not 13b) first. You might not actually need cIOSv7 either. If those installers all fail, try using Wad Manager 1.4 to install the WADs for IOS35 and cIOSv7. Then install rev 13 and/or IOS222/223.

If any of these steps work, please let us know. We need more info for 4.0 Wiis as plenty of people have trouble with this step.

Edit: One more important thing... you don't have GameCube stuff plugged in do you? If so remove them as they fool with this step immensely.

Those three questions are answered in the tutorial. And seeing it's a new page:

Thanks again Clipper

For some reason, it let me install HBC via the bannerbomb method. I didn't do anything differently..

So that's a huge relief. When I was in the installer I also uninstalled bootmii because I read somewhere that it can cause problems when playing with IOS files (when using 4.0 firmware).

So now I will try what you suggested. But just a question.. Do some IOS files install themself via the HBC? ie: I just make a folder for them in the apps folder? I don't need to use WAD manager 1.4?

Anyhow- I'll give IOS249 rev13 a try first. Cheers :D

You need to do the Wad Manager stuff to allow the IOSes to install. Take another look at the tutorial. It changed a bit over the last half hour or so. Once you have one IOS on there, you can use it to install others through the HBC.

Tried following the steps to install IOS249 but run into the same problems as before..

I run CMDVDX34v from the HBC and select the first option Downgrade IOS35. I got a network error the first time and when I try after that it displays 'Failed to add title. Maybe you already ran this?'

I try PatchMii but it freezes the Wii. Have to hard reboot to restart it.

Tried to run the WMIOS35 stuff (which uses WAD Manager 1.3) but it freezes the Wii as soon as it loads up. Have to hold the power button in to turn it off.

Could this be a problem with Japan region Wii running 4.0 firmware?

Well - at least I can still use Geexbox media player, so it's not a complete loss.

Edit: Ill check out the latest guide. Thanks again

If you don't have Gamecube stuff in, then you could have the Japanese version of the LU64 type. You might want to try the LU64 instructions. If you do, Reinstall BootMii and make a backup first, though.

1.3 WAD Manager locks up as soon as it loads.
1.4 WAD Manager seems to work ok but it locks up if I try to do anything with IOS35.

I won't give up till I find a solution. Maybe this will help someone else in the future if they run into the same problem(s)...

Ah - that could be the problem.. The serial number is LTF101xxxxx(6)

I'll give the LU64 type stuff a try.

Edit: Clipper - sorry to be a pain in the ass.. I installed bootmii so I could make a backup of the Wii NAND but when I load it (via HBC) it locks up as soon as the first screen loads (with the icons). I know that I need to use the wii console buttons to navigate. When I press the power button nothing happens, and the reset button just resets the console.

After all the probs I've had, I'm reluctant to try anything without making a backup of the NAND first.. just in case

Another quick question.

I'm installing the new cIOS38 r13b on my 3.4 Wii so that I upgrade to 4.0 as the wiki mentions I might lose the ability to install new IOS after the update.

So, does that mean I won't be able to install updates to cIOS38?

And 13b should be the only thing I install correct? Can you install multiple?

I was able to upgrade after moving to 4.0. I had to use WAD Manager 1.4 for whatever reason, but it works.

Alright, so I've just installed the Configurable USB Loader (been using Ultimate without any problems before this) and it keeps timing out most of the time when it's looking for the USB drive, although sometimes it detects it instantly. Any ideas what it could be?

Sorry for not replying earlier. I had to sleep ;). It's possible that IOS BootMii supports the Wiimote (I'm not sure). Did you try it? Try reinstalling BootMii too. Maybe something weird happened.

I don't know if you've already gone and upgraded, but rev 13 is actually better than rev 13b. Even if you did upgrade already, go and replace it. You could also install Hermes' IOSes if you like, although 13 gives you most of that.

Do you have the drive plugged into the USB port nearer to the edge? What revision of IOS249 are you using?

What makes 13 better than 13b?

13 added a new patch for 002 games that requires a small piece of code be added to USB loaders. Because people complained about their loader not working, Waninkoko put out 13b which reverted the change. Some newer games only work with 13 and fail with every other revision without that new patch (9/10/12/13b). Thus, if your loader is compatible (as Configurable v31c is), you should be using 13 for maximum support.

Does your drive shut down when you turn off your Wii? I had WiiConnect24 on right after I installed homebrew and I realized after awhile that it was preventing my external drive from turning off and the drive was overheating and having issues like yours. I've since turned that setting off and got a new Free Agent Go.

I'm an idiot, the "+" install feature refers to installing from the DVD, no need to unplug, plug-in the HDD. :lol

There's a good WBFS manager for mac, just look harder.

Okay, wtf. My Wii goes nuts any time I plug my external HDD into either slot. Can't get the USB Loader to recognize it to format it either.

Describe "goes nuts". You did remember to read the "What to install first" part of the tutorial, right?

And GWHT now has a page for using GParted that should help you to partition your drive correctly so that it is suitable.
