GAF Wii Homebrew thread: Homebrew, emulators, USB disc installs! Easy tutorial!

Guys - i'm extremely sorry if i missed this - i tried looking for it all over the recent pages cause the thread is huge so i just wanted to ask two quick questions cause i am quite the noob when it comes to Wii firmware:

1) Is it safe to update my non-modden non-homebrew Wii to 4.2 or is the bricking thing still there? Did Nintendo bother fixing this yet?

2) If i wanted to play PAL games on my Wii - is there a way to do so legally without having to buy a PAL Wii?

Thank you kindly in advance.

is there a way to backup all game saves including the ones that say they are uncopyable?

i have to send my wii in again because it has the flickering black pixels of death.

There's some homebrew called SaveGame Manager which apparently does the job.

I use startpatch, which basically does everything preloader hacks do including removing the no copy protection on saves. The buttons will still be greyed out but you'll be able to click them.

And there's already ANOTHER NSMBWii level editor in the works :D

Awesome. NSMB may quickly become my favorite Wii game, and having a level editor available would be ace. Here's hoping they keep it simple enough, with the ability to expand upon it a lot. (see; Lunar Magic)

I'm gonna update my Wii to 4.2 but I have a quick question about installing Bootmii.

I've downloaded and unzipped HackMii Installer. The Bootmii instructions say to "copy boot.elf to the root directory of the SD card ", but what do I do with the rest of the HackMii Installer files (wiiload folder, CREDITS, LICENSE...)? Do I also need to stick these onto the SD card or can I leave them on my PC?

Thanks.

A semi-related question...

Can anyone recommend a Bluetooth dongle for Vista? I want to try setting up my Wii-remote to work with my pc.

Thanks!

Anyone knows how we'll be able to load levels/worlds? Other than that, it's a very good news!!! :D

Wiiload is a PC application that allows you to trigger HBC app launch remotely, credits and license are text files, etc. They're all just support files.

This question has probably been asked a bunch of times already, but I'm still a little confused.

I have the actual game in my hands, North American copy.

Can I play this game from the disc without deleting my homebrew channel?

v48.1 of my Configurator app is out. It supports the profile option that has been added to the v48 strain of Cfg.

Profiles allow you to manage multiple favorite lists. This could be used to easily change between games for various family members, or for setting up genres (switch between sports, music and action games at the push of a button).

Yes. Install the latest HBC and it won't be deleted. You will lose BootMii and risk bricking (very miniscule chance) if you update from the disc, though. You would need to use Gecko OS to launch the game to avoid that.

Good god the V4.2 Safe Updater in finnicky.

Attempt 1: Crash after initializing network before downloading the first IOS
Attempt 2: Crash after initializing network before downloading the first IOS
Attempt 3: Crash after installing IOS33
Attempt 4: Crash while initializing network
Attempt 5: Crash while initializing network

Sixth time is a charm. Edit: Nope. Crashed after IOS56.

I guess I'll get around to doing an offline update. *shakes head*

Attempt 7: Crashed after IOS9
Attempt 8: ongoing.

If attempt 8 fails, I will do an offline update. I'm going to go ahead and assume that when the safe updater fails, the updates that have completed installation are committed and I can ignore them when I do the offline update? That'd make my life a lot easier.

Perhaps just wait a while. These errors seem to come in droves and are to do with the Nintendo servers being swamped.

Yes, the completed updates are completed and not needed again.

BTW, if I end up writing a new version of the Safe Updater when 4.3 comes out, I'll be changing it so that it allows you to skip the steps you already completed to remove this problem :).

Well attempt #8 is downloading the Wii Shop channel, which I see is the second last channel that's downloaded, so that's good. Hopefully this one... you know, actually works!

Yeah that's absolutely the way to do it. You could probably actually automate that process by polling the installed IOS version number and determining if it needs an update. Hell, you could also make it so that if your connect bombs out, it just automatically retries instead of giving you the boot--even restarting from the beginning of the current IOS would kick the crap out of making you restart the whole process.

Yeah, I'm not touching that part of the code. The error happens somewhere in the base code and the place where I was editing the code couldn't see the errors. Adding in a check for existing ones isn't that easy to do with the code I had to work with either. Adding an option to manually skip up until a certain point is the only part I fee comfortable adding ;).

:lol I meant that I cant access the Wii Shop, not the Nintendo channel, sorry.

Also, Imgetting NSMB tnite. Will it affect my Wii with updates on the disc? Should I be careful?

Can anyone help me with just removing the homebrew channel from my Wii so I can do official Nintendo updates? I don't tend to really use the homebrew channel for anything these days and would rather not have to worry about going through all the hoops to update it.

My Wii is version 3.2u and Homebrew is version 1.0.1 if that matters.

I checked the wiki guide but didn't see anything for this. Thanks for any help!

Do an official Nintendo update.

Done.

Just for my sake of understanding, can anyone tell me why I had no issue running NSMB off the disc?

I have a Wii currently on 4.0U and I modded it before BootMii existed so it has Preloader on it and not BootMii. The first time I popped the game into my system, it just ran fine without any warning of an update and no need to load it up through Gecko OS.

My brother is on 4.1 and used BootMii but is having the issue with it asking for an update. I've already sent him info from this thread about what to do but I'm just curious why he encountered the problem but I didn't. What about my setup made me avoid the update?

Preloader automatically shuts off any updating software before booting the disc.

So it will automatically delete the homebrew channel from the wii system menu and everything? There is nothing else I should manually delete or remove from the Wii first before updating? All I really have to do is just the Nintendo update? Almost sounds too easy!

Dragona, I love the dire consequences :D.

It will, but note that the official update does have that minor chance of bricking (which is neither increased nor decreased by you installing the HBC). Also, unless you made a backup of your NAND before ever installing the HBC, then there are and will always be traces of it. Whether Nintendo will start looking for those traces is anyone's guess, though.

The bottom line is that updates are just as safe whether you have HBC or not. There are other homebrew apps that do make it dangerous to update (Downgraders, region changers, channels, Preloader), but none of those are truly necessary and are easy to stay away from.

Read and re-read the wiki, but I'd thought I'd ask to remove all doubt. I need to get my Wii repaired, AGAIN. I followed wiki directions on USB loader, and know that IOS above 200 have been installed and removed as per wiki directions. I also installed the optional Hermes' IOS 222/223 for use with the USB loader. Should I just use anytitledeleter to delete the Hermes ones and format the Wii? I am currently on 4.2 BTW so it's not like I can just run the update and not sweat. :lol

Ugh, fuck my luck with the Wii. This will be my 8th or so replacement. Too pissed/sad to make sure if this is the 8th or 9th one, I don't care anymore.

;_;

God damn GPU...

The Wii Shop update is safe, right? I wanna have a look at these demos but I'm too scared about updating to 4.2. All I have on my system is the vanilla HBC, no BootMii or anything. It's fully updated though.

Would you still recommend not updating to 4.2?

I seriously feel like just buying a new Wii, purposely breaking the optical drive on my current Wii, and just shipping both to them while paying them to swap licenses. Refurbs are obviously not working out for me.

I'm having a problem with using Trucha Bug Restoer to load the patched IOS36 as IOS 249.

I get here:

Use Trucha Bug Restorer with IOS15 to install a patched IOS36 as IOS 249:

1. Choose IOS15 for IOS to reload.
2. Wait for the message to push 1 or Start to appear and do so.
3. Ensure the IOS at the top of the screen now states "IOS15 (Rev 257)"
4. Choose "IOS36 menu".
5. Change "Install IOS to slot" to be 249.
6. Set all three patch options to yes
7. Choose "Install patched IOS36".
8. If you are connected to the Internet, choose "Download IOS from NUS" with the D-Pad and Push A to select. If not, choose "Load IOS from sd card" with the D-Pad and push A to select. # When prompted, push A to start installation.
9. Press any button to exit when prompted.

And I get:

ES_AddTitleStart returned: -1035
Has your installed IOS36 a higher revision than 3094?
IOS36 installation failed.
Press any button to exit...

Halp?

You must have Wii gremlins in your house/unit/whatever.

In regards to what to do, I suggest using AnyTitleDeleter to delete the HBC channel (at JODI now, not HAXX) and IOS222, IOS223 and IOS250, and then use DOP-IOS (booted by BannerBomb) to install the official Nintendo stubs over IOS222,223,249 and 250. You could try the delete function in BootMii as well, but I think that might only be for the IOS version.

So I take it your Wii is somewhere between 3.3 and 4.1 seeing as you're following those instructions. I'm not sure what is wrong here. You did actually check the text was right in step 3, right? If so, I'd perform the previous step to downgrade IOS15 instead, and also try the offline install method.

If that still fails, try the 4.2 instructions.

Yeah, I'm on 4.0. Gonna retry everything, and do the offline method if need be.

Edit: No luck. :(

Do I need IOS upgrade to get the latest Wii Shop update?

IOS upgrade... Wait, are you saying you already installed IOS249 before? Why are you doing the Trucha Bug Restorer steps then? If you already had it installed, you don't need to redo those bits.

If you haven't previously installed 249, then you might need one of those IOSes to run WiiSCU, but might also be OK. Your current IOSes likely aren't vulnerable, though.

Ah, I've got it. Thank you! :D Hey clipper, I think a section on the wiki devoted entirely to this, perhaps one called "prepping for a repair", might prove useful. It may be something to think about as I am sure there are others who might benefit from it, whether right now or in the future due to their Wii being in the process of kicking the bucket. Regardless, thank you for helping me!

Now to decide whether I should get a refurb, or a new unit. I am really leaning towards new unit, if I have the funds.

Its been a while since I've messed with the Wii. I may have done the 249 update before.... but all I really want to do is be able to access the Wii Shop channel.

I tried using WiiSCU to no avail. :(((

EDIT: Whee, I used the other version of SCU and got it running! HUzzah!

EDIT2: AARG. Now I need to update to play NSMBWii. Will a regular update kill my homebrew? Gonna try the safe updater!

I suppose, but I'm not sure I'm qualified to write it seeing as my launch Wii has always been going strong (although has also had a few flickering pixels that have come and gone for years without any sign of ever getting worse).

Perhaps you could lend some of your first hand experience to the page ;).

Duly noted when the time comes later in the week, but right now there's a meteor shower just waiting to be watched!

You will keep HBC, but it is not totally harmless. It has the same chance of bricking your Wii as the 4.2 update (which seems to be some small fraction of a percent). It will also delete BootMii, but you can reinstall that afterwards.

Anyways, looks like I'm out of homebrew for a bit. I figured with so few Wii games I wasn't getting much use out of it, and I wanted to buy some VC purchases and download some demos, so I did the full update. I'll look up the 4.2 method when I get some extra time (real busy with school for the next month =\).

(well, truth be told, since my Wii has been giving me black sparkles, I was hoping the update would brick my system. :)).

So ill get my Black Wii next week, any information with which firmware its being released ?
