GAF Wii Homebrew thread: Homebrew, emulators, USB disc installs! Easy tutorial!

Like what? Should I be worried at all?
No, you are probably OK, but if you experience problems at later stages, make sure you mention that you used the Wanin updater as it will be a likely cause.

@MidnightScott:

No, you won't get bricked by holding out on the update.

Huh, I think my Wii is bricked?
I had the homebrew channel, but I never used the thing so I upgraded when Sin and Punishment 2 came out. Thing is, I played S&P, TvC, and few other games for a couple of weeks without any problems. Suddenly though, my Wii won't turn on any longer. Is it related? I didn't think S&P was 4.3, and the thread confirmed it, so what's the deal?

This is almost certainly not homebrew related. Also, your Wii might be OK. Unplug it from the wall for about 10 minutes and then plug it back in and try switching it on again.

Oh, also remove your SD card.

MidnightScott said:
Yeah but I'm worried if I were to install the individual updates for the channel, and then decide to update the system at a later date, would I somehow end up bricking the Wii? >_>;
I'm not sure what you mean. Updating the HBC now and then bricking later on if/when you decide to install a 4.3 or later firmware update? I can't really see how that specifically could be an issue. Worst case scenario is that you'd update the Wii anf just lose the HBC . Which is exactly what would happen if you install the 4.3 update while running anything other than this newest HBC release.

Just don't do anything reckless and you'll be fine.

Hi GAF hopefully you can help me and hopefully I haven't screwed up too badly.
So at 4.2 I installed HBC and usb-loader and ripped all my games etc.

I was under the impression that I had made a bootmii back up but have found that I guess I really didn't.
When the latest HBC channel update came out I updated via the patch through the channel.

Hackmii site said its safe to install system 4.3 so I did because I wanted to hit up the shop channel.
Everything was functioning fine played some Muramasa TDB, used the voting channel, shop channel etc.

The next day used the homebrew browser, and after the browser did it's update thing the usbloader wouldn't work, then the browser wouldn't work.
So I delete both from my hdd and reinstall hoping that would fix it. Now I am getting a "The system files are corrupted. Please refer to the Wii Operations Manual for help troubleshooting."

This message pops up after about 10 seconds which is about how long the message board on the wii takes to load. The message board says I have two messages
I can see on message pop up but cannot see the 2nd. By the time the 2nd should appear is when it gives me the corrupt message.

I can use the Wii in maintenance mode and it won't freeze leading me to believe it could be whatever the 2nd message in the wii message board is
but you can't access the message board in maintenance mode so deletion isn't happening. So GAF am I SOL or can anyone help me.

How does bootmii work exactly does it restore everything message board and all?
does it have the ability to selectively restore?
like if I were to reformat my system could I restore with the Nand.bin that I have now created

There's no need to go back to the backup. Updating to 4.3 has stubbed IOS249 and IOS222/223. Simply reinstall them using the methods in the tutorial for reinstallation and all will start working again.

Then again, are you saying that corrupt message comes up every time you boot? That indicates some other sort of problem, something that shouldn't have been caused by the Homebrew Browser or Cfg. Does it do that even if you have the SD card ejected?

As for the corrupt message board message, try changing the date to a date in the future. If that fixes things, you can change the date back in a few days.

Just ripped Monster Hunter Tri to my Wii, and it freezes after the menu when using Configurable USB Loader. Works fine using the disc.

Is there any way around this yet, or is it just my Wii being lame?

I'm going to give reinstalling IOS249 and IOS222/223 a try but yes the message pops up everytime. (did the date changing first)
After having changed the date the corrupted message pops up immediately after the push A screen no matter what date I change it to

SD card is not in and usb drive is unplugged.

edit
ok so this is rather interesting
after reinstalling IOS249 and IOS222/223 the amount of time it takes for the corrupt message to show has reset but it still always shows

sorry for dbl post/bump

on standby my wii is glowing letting me know I got a message and I really think that might be where the problem is unless you can think of anything else
is there an app that allows me to access the message board and delete messages

You need to use an IOS based on IOS37 to play MHT (I think this is because it supports Wii Speak). If you followed the GWHT, then IOS222 has that capability for you. Set the option for the game to use ios=222-mload.

There might be, but I don't know of any off the top of my head.

I wonder if the maker of this video is just toying with my fragile emotions or could it actually see the light of day? Too bad comments are disabled as I'd love to see people's reactions.

Well, the new HBC/BootMii upgrade inspired to get off my ass and swap the cards... and thankfully after using my PC to transfer everything over from the SD to the microSDHC, it became apparent that the former's sorted order was retained. Fantastic.

Yes, HBC now create a save in the NAND (where the save games are), the subtitle for it is "Brew Like a Pro!" :lol

If I install bootmi as boot2, the install is succesfull but it doesn't work.
The same as an ios.
Strange.
Try modifying the BootMii config file that should be sitting in your SD card. It might be configured to immediately load the system menu. You can configure an interrupt delay for that feature.

When it's on boot2, starting the console lead to black screen.
When on ios via homebrew channel and the option launch bootmi it restart the console.

Do you have another SD card? BootMii is a bit finicky on which cards it supports. If you do have one, copy the sd:\bootmii directory between the cards and see if the other one works.

Anybody have homebrew and everything running fine on a Black Wii? Might want to pick one up if so..
Plenty of people have homebrew running on black Wiis. The only Wiis that you can't install homebrew on right now are Japanese and Korean Wiis that have been updated to firmware 4.3.

He has done some loaders before....
so i dont think that is just blabbering about this....

if im not mistaken, in 2 o 3 months well know for sure..

OK, I've released a new modification of TBR to allow for installation of cIOSes on 4.3 virgin Wiis. It's using methods that have been known for a while now, but nobody made an app secure enough for me to recommend in the tutorial, so I just made my own :). Only problem is that I don't have a virgin 4.3 Wii to confirm my mods work, so if you've been waiting, let me know if it works or doesn't.

And because we haven't had it in a while...

On the Dios Mios thing, it's almost certainly real. I do love the fact he's trying to obfuscate so that it will only work with discs you rip yourself. I've been considering adding a similar feature to Cfg, but it seems a little pointless given the number of apps that would still let you pirate stuff.

That's the problem, though. I've got CFG Usb loader set to ios 222-mload as default. And it still doesn't work.

I hope it runs on a similar type thing to USBloader, I have to say. Also I have to admit, while there are apps to allow you to pirate things on our USBloader, using the FAT release does make it just a wee bit more irritating to pirate, since you have to go through extra loops, and that's something I appreciate.

Speaking of FAT USBloader, something odd that never happened when using the WBFS version: every time I put a new game into rip (or rather, re-rip right now), it takes about fifteen seconds to figure out how much free space is on the HDD. It never did that before. Any reason why?

IIRC, that's Crediar's Freedom project. He's been working on that since well before he discontinued Preloader and released it as open source for others to take the reign. I never thought he'd really get anywhere with it, but it seems that he has been making progress despite his long silence.

Yes. It's the one negative of FAT32 for games. It takes a long time to calculate free space on the drive due to the way the file structure works. There is no workaround, so it's just a delay you have to live with.

Did you follow the GWHT instructions when installing it? Other guides do not install the version with 37 merged in that slot. Follow the instructions to reinstall IOS222 and MHT should then work.

Oh it's really not a problem, I just wanted to make sure that there wasn't some sort of problem with my HDD. A tiny delay isn't a big deal when installing one game. And I already have dedicated most of the day to re-ripping my collection, so it's fine. I hope that didn't sound like a complaint.

Dragona Akehi said:

It didn't. However, when installing multiple games, you should probably only see the delay once. Does it work that way for you?

Also, for the new page:

Hello, complete newbie here. I'm thinking about purchasing a new Wii for the purposes of installing Homebrew so I can buy Tales of Graces and play the in-progress English patch once that's finished, and I'd rather not risk mucking up my current system, as there's a lot of downloaded stuff that I can't transfer to a new Wii. Are new Wii's hackable, or do they all have the latest 4.3 update on them? Is there something I should look for on the box to tell? I've installed CFW on PSP, is this about the same difficulty?

1) The Tales of Graces patch won't be released for a long time
2) The patch presumably won't require homebrew to run, like Fatal Frame IV (since it's from the same team).

Oh? Then how would I install the patch onto the game I would buy in the future?

You just put the patch on your SD card and run the game from the disc channel, like normal.

Ooooooooh. So basically all I need is a JP Wii and copy of Graces plus patch on SD card to play in English? I am SO game!

A quick check on the forums indicates that a JP Wii might only be necessary to access the paid DLC. (They haven't decided how they'll be handling that aspect yet). But their comments suggest that the patched game will be playable on other Wiis as well. I know that via homebrew it's possible to basically make the Wii region-free. I'm not familiar enough with the Riivolution patching method that they're implementing to know for sure if they can make the game run on an non-modified, non-JP Wii. But that does seem to be the case.

Could be wrong, though.

What are some good apps to mess with. I haven't used my homebrew channel for anything besides visual boy advance gx and config. usb loader.

So I was reading up on DIOS MIOS and it seems that it will have SNEEK as a requirement for it to work. There's nothing up on the GAF wiki explaining how to install SNEEK (I R DUM), so I was wondering if there'll be a tutorial if/when DIOS MIOS gets a public release (apparently September according to Crediar)?

Sorry if it seems I'm behind on the whole homebrew scene, but what is this DIOS MIOS you speak of.

Interesting. I thought it wasn't possible to have a GC USBloader.

To put it far too simply: he rewrote the MIOS (the mini IOS that puts the Wii into GC mode). It's an incredible achievement and me writing this post really doesn't do it justice, but I don't understand all the technical bits behind it.

I don´t know much about sneek, but by watching the tutorials its kinda long to do it....

but, i found a download and put it in your sd easy way :lol

From what I understand, Crediar is basically replacing the part of the Wii's operating system that handles GCN games with his own routines that will include support for parts of the hardware that are normally disabled when the Wii is running in GCN mode... such as the USB ports. It sounds pretty awesome, but it seems that it won't be quite as user-friendly as the traditional Wii USB loaders.

There was an installer at the SNEEK google code page, but now it appears as "Deprecated" in the download section. Dunno why, probably will get an update or something like that.

Anyway, seems the process is easy. You just need a dump from your Wii NAND (if you use bootmii, you then need to "extract" the bin file with an utility like ShowMiiWads and copy the contents to the SD). After that, the installer does the rest. Didn't try it myself because I hadn't enough space in my SD/USB :lol

Basically that's the process, but yeah, would be cool to see a guide.

WiiRadio's pretty cool, I have it running in the background right now. The latest version of WiiSX (Beta 2.1 unofficial USB2.0 MOD) runs pretty much everything I've thrown at it full speed, once I got it set up properly.

Rest assured that a guide will be added to the GWHT when the time comes. I don't feel there is too much of a need for it right now. The only features it provides right now are mostly only useful for pirates.

Is there another way to upgrade the Shop Channel than WiiSCU? I used that previously and it worked well but it doesn't work anymore. Each time I try to download anything with the new WiiSCU it throws an error: it downloads the first part of the file (or tries to) then it spits out "BAD hash".

hit "1" on the wii remote, pick usb device

Well I obviously tried that already, it won't let me select USB unless I'm returning from a program that was reading from the hard drive, then I can select it but the screen goes blank for a few seconds before displaying the homebrews on my SD card again. There's nothing wrong with my HDD, I can still use it with other programs just fine.
