GAF Wii Homebrew thread: Homebrew, emulators, USB disc installs! Easy tutorial!

Ok, so I was able to fix my USB Loader channel problem, as I had an older version of it.

But I'm still having problems with Super Mario Galaxy. Now this time, I was able to start it up and get it running. After the beginning intro and walking through the town w/Mario, it was ok. But then when the cutscene of Bowser pulling the castle up from the ground, it froze.

Also, before I updated USB Loader channel, I was able to access and play my backup of Zack & Wiki with no problems. Now, with the update, the screen goes black.

Would a re-install of the game help? Is there something in the settings of USB Loader that may help alleviate some of these freezing issues? Are there other cIOS that I need to install?

Are you perhaps using a drive formatted as WBFS? That sounds sort of like the corruption issue that happens with that format type.

Yeah, I think I do. I was following this video guide on youtube and they had this part in getting the drive formatted as FAT32 and then using this program (WBFS Manager) to format the drive again to WBFS.

So if I have the drive formatted as just as FAT32, it should solve those issues, or is there something else?

It's difficult to say, but I do recommend doing that. The tutorial linked to on my tag (and the second post of the thread) will help you out.

Thanks for the info Clipper.

I followed your instructions and tried to load Super Mario Galaxy again, and I get this:

308453_10151135426459421_1627606678_n.jpg

This occurred around 57% mark, and I've tried installing it three times already. For Zack & Wiki, it worked out fine. Any suggestions?

Make sure you update the IOS to the latest version of d2x via the tutorial too. It's possible the older tutorial you followed gave you a bad IOS. Checking the disc for dirt is another good idea.

I did the first 3 games fine but now I get errors when trying to rip. I'm trying mario kart, donkey kong returns, and something else and I get:

split 0: no file
error creating file
[+] Installation error! (ret = -1)

Does anyone know what this means?

Can't say I've seen that error before, unfortunately. What's your setup and have you added anything to config.txt?

Does it tell you to in the instructions in the wiki? I'm not sure to be honest... I installed the homebrew channel, d2x and usb loader recently (and any steps to complete that) and it worked the other day for donkey kong jungle beat and 2 other games but now it keeps giving me just that error I post and I tried 4 games now. I'm just using an sd card for the usb loader app and I'm using a usb stick formatted to wbfs to rip stuff to. It seemed like you suggeted wbfs is a bad format to rip to? I remember reading the tutorial and choosing that for some reason.

Edit: Should I just try to reinstall usbloader or something? I don't know how anything would get corrupted with it off but it's possible? Just not sure what's going on.

Well, you could try reformatting to FAT32 or NTFS. I don't think reinstalling anything else would help for an error like that.

I guess I'll give it a shot. Apparently I was using fat32 but it obviously makes a folder called wbfs or whatever with the files. It's frustrating because it worked the other day and now it's not.

Decided to play around with CFG today and updated to 70r46. To my surprise Devolution support was in the notes. Did soome research and Devolution has been around I guess since July, the app that is. Tested the version r135 and it was playing Star Fox Adventure with audio and all, pretty amazing stuff. Haven't figured out how it works in CFG though. I noticed CFG will download it for you and the option menu allows you a "yes" or "no" answer for devolution. Only thing is CFG sees my games install to SD card but not to the USB drive.

Edit:

Fixed the issue with the games not being seen on the HDD but still no luck with Devolution within CFGloader just get a black screen. Outside of CFG though it works great.

Edit 2:

Squashed out most of the issues. The only one left is that Devolution constantly asks to verify my disc when I go back to play them.

Yes, the wbfs folder is correct for a FAT32 installation. Not sure what's going on here then, sorry.

Ensure you haven't made the directory read only or something, though. Renaming the one you have there and letting it create a new one may help in this regard, you can merge the contents later so that you don't need to rerip any games.

So I'm modding my neighbors wii to run backups of his kids' games and while using d2x's installer i accidentally installed something into Slot 249, any way I can undo this? (I ask because after installing CFG USB Loader and trying to run a game the wii would black screen then restart).

Please don't tell me I'm fucked, lol.

Installing d2x into the 249 slot won't do anything bad. There's no need to correct for it. You might have an incompatible hard drive, but try doing the install again just to make sure.

Ah, thank you. I still had the NAND dump from before the IOS installs and reverted to it and redid it all from scratch, all is good!

Also, im wondering I'm looking at the newer revision of CFG looking for multi-disc loading support, and I found https://code.google.com/p/cfg-loader-mod/downloads/list

cfg70MODr37

-improved compatibility with DM(Lite)2.2 and devolution
-improved multi-disc dumping of GC games
-supported multi-disc loading of GC games with devolution

is this any different that using the DIOS-MIOS modded r35.dol that you've linked to us with, but with added multi-disc loading support? can i just swap the .dol file and be ok?

Apologies (again) for not reading back through the recent pages but has anyone been able to get Dragon Quest Anniversary working in any way?

I can get to the game select screen and look at the extras but if I try to select a game I get a blank screen.

FYI I have a PAL Wii modded in all sorts of ways and can play other Japanese discs. I can also put it onto HDD if that is what's needed.

I've had the tutorial updated to pointing to an r37 beta for a long time and just updated that to make it clear to install the latest version, seeing they're up to r46 already.

So im up to v46 and am trying to find a game that prompts with booting disc 2 and i cant find one so im just replaying through enter the matrix and will report back with results when i reach disc2.

Also i saw the Mode v3 line about something new! AM EXCITE! is it GC related? :)

EDIT: any reliable way to convert Action Replay codes to WiiRD/Ocarina codes?

EDIT2: found out how to do it. http://gbatemp.net/topic/313218-use-gamecube-cheats-with-neogamma/

EDIT3: And I found a way to import .gci saves of gamecube games (ie 100% saves from gamefaqs) into my official memory card via this nifty homebrew app. http://code.google.com/p/gcmm/

I feel like this is heaven. :D

so, i got new SD cards yesterday and was wondering about what things i need to have ready before i can rip ,y GC games and play like the Wii games.
i haven't done anything so far since i heard you need to format the card in a special way.
i'm using 4.2 firmware with some startpatches active and the CFG USB loader recommended here. also, i have bootmii installed.

Download the newest Dios Mios, and as long as you have your usb hard drive set up right, you can install GC games through CFG loader, and play from USB.

Upgrading to the latest CFG finally fixed my mios_dios woes. Both Wii and Gamecube titles now boot as they should.

Now if the mios_dios team can work on getting streaming audio working... Super Monkey Ball just isn't the same without that music.

can anyone get Kirby's Dream Collection to work on their CFG loader? I can go through the museum and stuff, but if I try to start one of the games, it dumps me back to the main menu. Obviously runs fine from disc.

Ok, please dont kill me!

I've tried reading the tutorials, and I cant find the info I'm looking for.

I installed all the usb loader stuff for xenoblade chronicles ages ago. Played the shit out of it. Now, this is where it sucks. My wife has taken my sd card out of the Wii, and now I cant seem to load games from my USB. I even tried re inserting Xenoblade and ripping it to my usb to no avail. The homebrew channel just goes black.

Obviously I need something on a sd card? Can someone help me out?

So just to summarize

-My Wii was able to play Xenoblade off my usb earlier, So I know I've done all the stuff in the tutorial at one stage. No changes have been made to the wii, except the sd card is missing.

EDIT: Baw, I think the external HDD has changed too. So I'm going to need to reformat my harddrive and follow those steps?
I'm sorry for not seeing the relevant info in the post, but if anyone can help I'd be appreciative.

The Homebrew Channel is essentially just a channel listing the apps on the SD card or an HDD. As you don't have any apps on your current SD card either put CFG on there or on the HDD (if the HBC can detect it). You shouldn't need to do the other steps again.

There is no need to reformat your hard drive unless you put it to WBFS in the past (which I doubt, as WBFS wasn't favoured when Xenoblade came out). If you don't want to put the stuff back onto an SD, then just follow the instructions for installing Configurable USB Loader to your hard drive and it should all work, assuming you have your drive formatted as FAT32. If not, then you will need to format the drive to FAT32 or if it is formatted as NTFS use the Forwarder to launch Cfg (it can launch Cfg from an NTFS partition, unlike the HBC).

Nope works fine for me. Make sure you have d2x and that Block IOS Reload is set to Auto.

Its obviously not a big deal or anything, but when I try to play the emulated games in the Smash Bros Brawl menu, it freezes on a blank screen. Is this a known issue with USB loading?

Yes. Although ripping the game again and using d2x might solve the issue. I can't remember if the Masterpieces were ever made workable...

Is this d2x a newer development (over the last year or so?). I don't know if I have it. Should I upgrade for sure?

Metroid Prime trilogy definitely works on whatever I have now...

You can play Cube games from USB now??? Awesome!!

edit: oh... streaming music issues.... Looks like this party hasn't started yet :P

Thanks to this thread, I found out about the Gamecube being playable from USB. Oh lawd.... this is good :D I always put my old games in storage, so this lets me bring my GCN collection back without clutter. I've been ripping it all night :)

A few games have music/disc switching issues, but most of them work perfect! And I hope these things will be fixed in the future (I'd also like to see DIOS MIOS restore my ability to launch Cube games from the disc channel... Losing that is janky. And lose the boot logo!)

Check out Devolution, it supports audio streaming (for the most part).

The last few times I've used my Wii I've been able to browse the Wii shop channel, but I can't seem to purchase or download any games. Is there a particular update I need? Is there a simple way to update from the Homebrew channel? I believe I'm on 4.3U.

Does anyone know which region-free solution works with Dragon Quest X?

A coworker of mine for some reason has a US Wii and wants to play DQX. Using TinyLoad just results in a stalled loading screen.

So I've got my GCN discs ripped and everything mostly works!

Some games do crash pretty reliably at certain loading spots. Is this the state of GCN USB loading right now? Or is it my Wii?

Some of my IOS might be out of date, or something, but I wouldn't want to fiddle with that unless other people are playing GCN games with no crashes.....

Drudging this back up for a second... I was messing around with Dios Mios and got it to work with a small game like animal crossing, but everything else requires full residency in my SD card to work, so that's a no go... so I figured I'd try out Devolution except it doesn't work. Using CFG loader and trying to load a game I just get an out and out black screen. Trying to run devolution directly I can mess with the menus but it can't read games from either SD card OR USB making it rather pointless.

Again, Animal Crossing works fine just loading with dios mios from SD but I get no love if I try the same with Devolution... no flashing lights or anything, just a black screen.

I've gotten back into Wii homebrew since I bought one for all of $50 on Cowboom.

Some questions and notes:

1) Noticed the d2x installer in the tutorial is outdated, because the newer d2x has no way to choose IOS 236 for use with the installation. It doesn't ask anything, actually. I had to redo all the steps when I realized I installed d2x into 236, and not using it, because the new ones don't even ask, so I just used an older version.

2) I don't like my SD card cluttered with nonsense, so I was wondering if I could delete some of these folders, I used for Bannerbomb and so on:

OyVQz.jpg

Which ones are the necessary ones? I know apps is mandatory, but not sure of anything else.

3) Homebrew browser is nerfed for me, partly. Emulators are no longer a selectable category when I go into it. When I hit A on it, it just does nothing, but it will load all the other categories. I don't know if they were taken off the browser completely now, but is there a compilation site where I can just insert them manually?

Also, the browser asks for an update to version d of the program, and when I update it, it goes into error -6 and loops Retry over and over, and I have to delete and replace the c version to get it to work again. I don't think the issues are on my end, it was fine just a couple weeks ago, when I installed an NES emulator from it and haven't done anything sense.

What about the others? Apps contain the Homebrew Channel options. Bootmii is necessary I believe, even though I skip it when it boots with the Wii.
No

Apps: contains all the apps you can launch through Hombrew Channel, every app (boot.dol) is stored in its own folder with: icon.xml (icon image for the app) and meta.xml (description of the app).

Bootmii: contains the files necesaries to restore/backup your internal Wii memory (NAND), necessary if you mess with your Wii system, so you can restore it to an old state.

Nus: contains the files you retrive from Nintendo servers, they are used by cIOS intallers, once you have your IOS already installed you don't need them.

ios: contains the IOS in case you don't have internet connection, so you can make an offline instalation of your cIOS, not necessary after installation.

All the txt files you have there are useless, the boot.elf is only required to install Homebrew Channel for first time, you don't need it anymore.

Thanks man, very informative, I appreciate it.

Quick question.

I fired up CFG for the first time in a whine and noticed that it's several versions behind the current release. Do I need to update it one step at a time, or can I just jump straight to the latest version?

Straight to the latest version, that said if it's too old it may not update properly, you may have to manually download the latest version from their website instead of just updating straight from the program.

If it's been a really long time, you may need to update your cIOS as well.
