Game Developers celebrating assassination of Charlie Kirk [Update] Sucker Punch Dev Fired, and SP issue statement

Papito Lore, I paid for the Deluxe Edition of this game at launch. I still regret to this day
I dodged a bullet. I was considering to pay a little more to get the game with my Ryzen CPU but I ended up deciding against it.

However, as a SciFi fanatic that (most of the times) finds the medieval fantasy setting dull and boring I'm sad about how Starfield turned out to be, it killed space RPGs for who knows how many years to come.

I expect these companies will implement more firmer policies regarding political postings, or other delicate matters i.e. assassination going forward.
You shouldn't think it has to be said; "Please don't celebrate murders and assassinations" but here we are.

Since they refuse to address anything, I imagine any tweet Sucker Punch makes to promote the game before launch will get swamped. So naturally, they will limit replies.

Gentle reminder that a small number actual Microsoft employees earning hundreds of thousands of dollars yearly recently barricaded a portion of the campus, called it 'freedom village' or something of that sort and made ultimatums of the exec team.
They were promptly fired and escorted off the premises.

But the point there is that these are always a very small, vocal minority. So labeling an entire studio with the actions of one social media manager isn't really apt.

I'd be surprised if that person who authorized that tweet isn't fired within the week.

I'm quoting myself because I called it: this is from a recent Kotaku article.

You can call me Nostradamus now 😂

The fact that Sony/SP could only stomach releasing a semi confirmation of the firing via Kotaku is telling. We'll admit we fired them but only to our comrade-in-arms game journos.

Bethesda is Scrubbing their social media post. Where people had replied with proof of what the PR person did. All post after SEP 10 are gone. And the last post they have is Sep 5.

They are scrubbing hard.
What a bunch of dicks. If they scrubbed off everything since the day Kirk got killed, they musta had other stupid things posted too.

My felow Gafer bro, series is not about americans, if u made any effort of clicking on that 1min long trailer u would know that, its about russian kgb agents pretending to be american couple durning late cold war :)

About my age- im 43 so experienced actual communism here in poland(from fun stuff- empty shelves on most of the shops, including food, and toilet paper queues, just 2 quick funny examples ;p ), its fall, and how capitalism looked early on, experienced feminism invading my society too over decades and what it did to birthrate ;)

Ppl in the west dont realise how poor 99% of ppl living under communism were(exceptions were political police and higher ups of the party, those lived like kings in comparision, no equality ;p), both of my parents were highly college educated and i still had this 14inch yellow(but black and white) beauty till 1995:

I know, I clicked the video. The series is about Soviet spies, but it was of course written by Americans.

I know that the Eastern Bloc countries had their problems (even if though I know that you Polish don't like to be called Eastern Europeans 😅) but the irony is that your parents most likely wouldn't be highly college educated were they born in the west.

P.S. nice TV set.

I read their article now. So out of all of the internet to confirm the SP girl's firing, it was Kotaku they opened up to. LOL

Sony confirmed her departure in an email to Kotaku but declined to comment further. "Drew Harrison is no longer an employee of Sucker Punch Productions," a spokesperson from Sony Interactive Entertainment wrote.

why is this not enough? Why does Sony have to assume culpability for an employee's tweet made on their own time?

They've done the right thing by laying Harrison off. Same way other institutions have done.

I think the response is perfectly fair.

Nobody says they have to.

But other companies like MS stated they are looking into things.

If firing the SP girl was all that was needed, why talk to Kotaku but not anyone else? Why do gamers not get a statement, but a couple editors at Kotaku get it?

They would have to make a lot of posts saying the same thing, for different people.
More than one person needs firing.

No fucking way
Bethesda like most western devs is leftists too bro, i dunno if there is even 1 big dev company that isnt infected hard by woke virus nowadays in the west, some smaller ones are still sane but super big ones- totall fall from grace.

Starfield being one of the worst written, sanitized, preachy, most incredibly lame RPGs of all time written by obviously ineffectual and self-righteous weirdos makes more sense now.

What a disappointment. You can definitely tell they were more concerned with portraying the politically correct "right kind of world" than with writing an exciting story with compelling characters.

Then you end up with the "sin city" where people's idea of a good time is putting on some ugly unisex leotards and going out for a night of hallucinogenic drugs + platonic hands-off dancing.

I got the constellation edition and I don't regret it, but yeah the writing, especially for the companions and how they react to your actions sometimes in that overly preachy way is completely awful; makes sense if those writers were of the same mindset of the person who made that terrible tweet.

Professors and Teachers should not surprise you. They have been a bastion of Marxist cultural garbage for a couple generations now.
They dont realise that under communism actual college professor is so poor they can be bribed with 1 raw 20-25 lbs turkey- true story, my grandma did that back in the 70s communist poland :P

Sony should make a statement similar to what Microsoft made. That's not that hard to do.

Just so I can get this straight in my head, was she the student or the professor?

No matter your political affiliation, don't celebrate assassinations. Charlie Kirk agreed with killings of Palestinian kids, don't be like him, be better than that.

This type of stuff in Canada probably started in the 2000s or later I'd guess. Around the same time, teachers couldnt flunk kids in elementary and middle school grades anymore. I dont know if that was countywide or just Ontario. I never got any kind of weird political shit in the 80s and 90s in grade school stretched out to university. Aside from the one time, one of my university profs wheeled in a TV to watch the OJ verdict. Had nothing to do with the class (it was one of my business classes! lol), but it was pure circus. She probably just wanted to watch it herself instead of teaching the class that day. lol

But hearing what my nieces and nephew have learned in school for years, its a weird shit show of oddball rudimentary math ("Japanese style" tic tac toe criss cross math) that is clearly 1-2 grades dumbed down from what me or my bro learned in grade school, and they got their subject matter like gender this and that and psychological/social study kind of stuff that is more about race and hot topics than me in grade 5 going to the school library on ground level and writing something about volcanos as the big project of the month.

If there's one thing about educators you never know until someone finds out from their kid telling them what happened in class...... That hail storm story about the teacher being one part nuts and one part child perv.

And school boards wonder why parents think the class content and faculty are crazy.

My father was, grandma worked in meat industry so she had kind of "access" to more meat than ur avg person, and ofc she knew ppl who knew ppl, u had to do stuff this way since most of the shops had empty shelves all the time.
Long story short grade from that professor was last grade needed for my dad to finish his college but for some reason he was suspiciously vague what my dad had to do to pass, so my grandma being streetsmart quickly added 2 to 2 and voila ;)
She basically did this, just with a carrot, not a stick:

Communism is such a fundamentally dysfunctional form of society that it reshapes everyday interactions from being based on trust and moral standards to this kind of casually necessary corruption in order to survive. Takes a long time to recover from that, but glad to see Poland's been doing well lately.

LMAO! That made my day. Thank you!

As I said before, do what you want supporting a company. If there was a hot Bethesda game coming out, I'd still play it on GP. But for those of you with more strict convictions about supporting a game studio based off politics or any other non-gaming related message, no worries. Just do it and teach these companies a lesson.

Dont listen to anyone saying you shouldnt do that. And if you feel one person or a couple bad apples is enough to turn you off and spend your money elsewhere, just do it and dont listen to any brown nosers saying you cant do that and should still buy the game no matter what. Those people are just day one gamers who will feel like shit their hyped up game just had sales go down 20%.

It's your money and choice. Do as you want.
I don't care if people choose politics and not buy the game, but at least be consistent and not pick and choose which company you support / don't support. As for me, I don't care about this shit, still Day 1 for me.
I agree. If folks don't want to get involved in politics and just want to play games then that's their choice. I would much rather it be that way myself. For those who feel this is too much to ignore and they decide to use the only real devices they have, their voice and their money, then that their choice.

I would suggest those who don't want to get wrapped up in all this just put the thread on ignore.
Wait, so why did you click on the Sucker Punch / current event reasons?

Sadly, this was similar to Chris Ray Gun's take
Sacred Symbols this week.

He had posted mockingly "thoughts and prayers" after the assassination.

He has a pretty visible history of posting support for violence like with Luigi Mangoome, he's made "jokes" about throwing a party when Musk and. Enzo's die. He's "jokingly" told people to kill themselves after the election - which seemed to really bruise him.

His explanation was that there's a double standard about these things - referencing the school shooting that happened the same day.

But, he never comments on the violence - especially lately because it's been trans/trans aligned/leftists shooting the schools so his explanation felt real hollow.

I'd not throw him quite into the celebratory crowd, but it's unfortunate to see regardless as I rather like him.
Yeah, it's pretty disappointing but not expected given the shit he and his friends say on The Snark Tank, he usually tones it down for Sacred Symbols and given the nature of the show, that works most of the time.

Chris walked a weird line on the podcast. Halfway expressing remorse and saying it was an ill timed joke, and half doubling down on generic left leaning responses we've all heard. School shootings, quotes of Kirk taken out of context, free speech is important, etc.

Colin should have suspended him for a while. I'm not saying he should have been fired, I haven't had time to marinate on that. But they should have taken Chris out of the equation for a while to let everyone, including him, calm down. Disappointed.

While I don't disagree with your perspective in general, I think the context of this scenario and the fact that Sony has made no qualms about promoting liberal/leftist agendas.

Now - after years of Sony and, these industries at large, supporting very vocally only one side of the political and social spectrum - which only leads to emboldening its employees to share their viewpoints; of which many are disgusting and disrespectful towards roughly half of their audience (western/usa) - that emboldening has lead to such brazen arrogance that said employees can act this way

So, while Sony may hopes this goes away - if this was somehow reversed, you know it would getting Sony's full endorsement- so now people on the right are sick of the double standard; sick of playing by rules they don't follow because it's rules for thee but not for me

All you have to do is not post anything. Just sit there and do nothing. Run your PR. If I ran a company my first rule would be for PR, no politics.

It will never be enough. When I was in this thread they wanted her fired. Now she's fired and now they want Sony to say something. Sony says something to Kotaku but that's not enough they want Sony to publicly say something.

Again, I get and even agree with the sentiment here but context is king.

What's PR stand for? PUBLIC RELATIONS.

This is a very public facing event, that many people in your studios are cheering on, with what we can assume is because these employees have an outsized level of arrogance that nothing will happen to them.

They think they are protected because their Studio and parent company has signaled they would by their support.

That brazen and disgustingness is in the
PUBLIC square and affects optics/relations with arguably half its consumers.

Does anyone think that the woman who is let go from sucker Punch over her tweets would go back in time and really do it again? No, I don't think she would. She only did because she thought she was safe because of past support for leftist causes from Sony and because the company and Studio culture only validate her and her kind of world view.

Fuck! Last edit. And do you think that Sony would have fired her if the backlash wasn't so fever pitch? This is such an abnormal and over-the-top response for them because it can't be ignored in the public Square. This is 10 X what happened last summer with Trump even, which I'm sure if we went and looked for old tweets from employees, there would be plenty cheering on what happened to him

there is a whole thing that Scott Adams posted that they do not think they are doing anything out of the ordinary because everyone agrees with their world view. They live in a bubble.

100%.

They believe so unequivocally, so objectively that their worldview is not just morally superior, but the only one that has any merit to follow. They don't even fake that they want there to be multiple viewpoints. Those type of people think only one mindset and one world of view should exist. They are no better than the fascists they claimed to be rally against and while that's not a unique or original take at this point, it's sad that it is so.
