Game Informer May Cover Reveal: Final Fantasy XV

Must be some custom luminous? Sort of like batman AK customized UE3 engine.

I don't think it's a separate customized version of Luminous and they have 2 versions of the engine. Seems they just want to give it a new name now that the finished version is different from the original version Yoshihisa Hashimoto first spearheaded?

They probably mistook it for Ebony which was the prototype engine from the PS3 days...which was a retooling of Crystal Tools lol.

Yeah, might be some mistranslation or something.

BTW, was there any confirmation Versus' engine was a customized Crystal Tools? I've been trying to read up some old reports and it seems they created a new separate game engine for Versus focused on real-time action.

It was confirmed by Nomura that Versus was using its custom engine which was specialized for action heavy games. Rumour had it it was called the "Black Engine". Can't find an actual source for that (if it even exists). I don't think it's a coincidence that the prototype engine was then revealed as the Ebony Engine in 2014; the names could be interchangeable.

But yeah, dunno if it was Crystal Tools now that you ask. It was just rumour it was custom-made from Crystal Tools.

I thought they said they aren't in the game? I mean, I thought they said that before. Haven't read the article yet.

So apparently during their visit they were shown an in engine monster model viewer, and they said they saw a Tonberry.

Tabata later went on in a separate interview (after GI's visit) to make it sound like there were no tonberries.

So apparently the model exists, but it's possible it may have been cut? Maybe there was no time to animate/program it as an enemy? Or maybe it's not definite whether or not they will have time to put them in the game and Tabata's opting to under promise and potentially over deliver?

Anyone got a summary of the video? Can't watch right now. Thanks in advance.

Um some little bits so far..
  • GI crew must of visited Square Enix just prior to the Uncovered event. They interviewed Amano while Tabata was going over and discussing the "Big Bang" animation.
  • The Regalia car controls seem to be that the car wants to "stick to the road", like you don't have the level of freedom in the car controls such as GTA. You can take the car off road but seems like it takes effort. lol
  • Joe Juba felt the combat felt much more improved than Episode Duscae.
  • Joe also saw something in the monster gallery that as a fan made him lose his shit but won't divulge. Ben Hanson mentions fans of FFV and FFVI should be happy and a lot of the team members are fans of those games too. Doesn't really allude to why.

In general Joe Juba, who wrote the main GI article and features, loved what he saw and as a big fan seems really excited. The podcast host, Ben Hanson, on the other hand during the talk seems to keep bringing up negative points, at least for him, like a penalty for sprinting so you can't sprint infinitely and Andrew Reiner brings up GTA does the same thing but Joe said they did take this criticism to the team and they responded that they had took it to heart. Ben also didn't like the fact that the driving distance between towns means a lot of travel time...despite the main point of the game being a road trip. lol He also says he didn't really get much of a feed of the comradeship between the characters but then as Joe points out how could they when everything they played was in Japanese, barring the chapter 1 cinematic.

They also praised Square Enix's transparency because they recorded hours of footage without restriction.

My guess it was meant to be a surprise but how would the Tonberries work?

That's what I like to hear! Seeing Garulas appear in their classic design(basically look like realistic versions of the sprite) made me smile. But, I wanna see a FFVI enemy appear.

Ah, yes, all of that is entirely plausible. Sounds like the DLC for this is going to be in the style of BioWare and Bethesda, i.e. new scenarios. I could see Tonberroes being in that, of not the vanilla game. They lend themselves well to post-game content, too.

Edit: I would be pretty disappointed if trips between towns didn't take a good while. If this is the theme of the game, commit to it. I hope they talk a bunch while they're in the car, too. You can already see that in the footage though and FF is rarely lazy with extra dialogue.

Watching this podcast thing reminded me of something. I kind of wish the magic wasn't tied to a "weapon" slot. Or I wish you could hold L1 or something and you'd have 4 more slots for magic (while still having the original 4 for weapons). As it is now, I am not sure how often I'll use magic or I'll just keep using the same ones over and over. Switching them out would be easy, but I still would have preferred another system in place.

you can see the obvious classical FF influence beyond the modern stuff - it's something in addition to the gorgeous ost that stands out and makes me hopeful for this game despite hating Square-Enix.

Yeah I feel like that's weird too.

What's a Tonberry?

My guess it was meant to be a surprise but how would the Tonberries work?
Probably similar to FFXIII-2 where they stood still and had a SHIT LOAD of HP. As the
Fight went on hisnattacks would be the stages of the tonberry getting ready to use its knife, until it did and it was usually a OHKO.

Yeah, that would be an improvement if magic is supposed to be used a lot (though I have a feeling it won't be, especially since they're items), but I think the throwing system is a bigger problem. Apparently you can have it automatically attack the targeted enemy by holding L1 and then using magic, but that should be the default. I mean, normal weapons do that, it's like that in KH and it was like that in the Versus gameplay trailer. I don't see why they would have throwing as the default and have auto-targeting accessible via the L1 modifier when people are much more likely to attack enemies (or other targetable things) with magic than throw it at some random place...

I'm kind of wondering if attire only counts the one we are getting with the deluxe edition or will some be unlockable in game.

I think the attire will be exclusively for the suit you get from the ultimate edition, if I'm not mistaken. I would be very interested to know if the other characters have this "attire" option as well...

Don't forget there are two types of magic though, the traditional magic which is the one we know about, and another called ring magic, which is still a mystery as to how it's used.

Either way, I also dislike magic being consumable, being a hoarder myself.

That can't be, otherwise why give it a slot in the menu? if it was the only one they could of had it as an item you could select, not bother having a slot in the equipment...

Also the magic system reminds me a lot of the FF8 draw system, which I didn't mind...

No, from what I've understood they scrapped the idea of using Crystal Tools altogether because it was wholly unusable for the kind of expansive game that they knew FFVsXIII was going to be, so they made a whole new custom engine that was better up to the task of handling larger environments. Maybe they didn't begin completely from scratch but I doubt the end result could really be called "customized Crystal Tools" with how much work was done to it over the years.

That's what I thought too. Rumors like this tend to start from some source though so I dunno.

Btw, Ben confirmed it wasn't a misunderstanding. Looks like Luminous will probably get a name change/rebrand somewhere in the future.

I was told that the engine is no longer called Luminous.

They keep on saying this, but they have only shown small snippets so far...They should know that is more interesting seeing a decent segment of footage rather than getting more words...

Most outlets get B-Roll, but they try to produce editorial content of some form. If they just put up hours of gameplay, these guys wouldn't really have jobs.

This is better for SE (and us, imo) anyway, since they've been giving us a pretty good look at where the team's thinking is. Tabata in particular.

I'll see hours of FFXV footage when it's in my hands.

I am not talking about hours, even a couple of minutes of footage would be decent. They have shown very little so far. Not enough to show the elements flow together. Neither Duscae nor Platinum had a decent combination of gameplay and narrative either.

Well, now you're asking GI to do Square Enix' work. Pretty obvious why that's not happening.

Well they address that and it's because there was such a big response to how rough the game looked that everyone was being critical of the graphics despite the big "Pre-Beta gameplay" slapped across the footage that GI put on there.

They also go on to say in the podcast that everyone wants transparency from a dev or to see work in progress on how games are made and when that happens and you get someone like Square Enix who lets a worldwide outlet like GI record hours of footage, not even if it's pretty, and then these same people calling for transparency then start judging the game when it's still got 5 more months in the oven. lol

I mean they've still got 2 weeks more of features to roll out.

Gilgamesh and Ultros, or maybe even Siegfried perhaps? Seems like a lot of the monster designs are inspired by those 2 games but I'm trying to imagine what else would stand out so specifically.

It would be nice to see just a simple 5-10 minute raw gameplay clip from "chapter 1". Show me combat, traversal, driving in the car, etc, with no one talking and no jumping around.

Prompto had a sad and lonely childhood. I think that's new?

So he's basically the typical "act super positive to hide my depressing past" character.

Also the Luna/Noctis dynamic is something that's been in so many movies/anime/manga etc. I've read it so many times before and it's disappointing to see it here.
