Game Informer May Cover Reveal: Final Fantasy XV

The clean and proper style from FF XV is even present in Duscae. That's why I'm not even surprised by what the menu looks like right now. It's like.... it wants to be super professional or something like that.

But like I said, there's potential in giving animations and more vibrant personality to the menus. Maybe when you click on Prompto, you'd get a image of him goofing off or laughing or smiling. Ignis can be researching something. Gladio can be sharpening his sword or practicing with Noctis. Noctis can be sleeping or thinking of Luna or his dad.

This sounds awful. The problem with stuff like this is that it totally ignores the context of what's happening in the game. If you're in the middle of a very tense or traumatic sequence of the story, and you open up the menu and characters are goofing off or whatever, it's totally dissonant.

That's not to say I think the execution here is perfect, but adding superfluous animations is not the way to improve it. The characters display their personalities constantly throughout normal gameplay — there's no need for that to leak into the UI.

Also, those XIII menu facial animations are goofy as hell.

I'd rather have character portraits like the ones from the e3 2013 trailer for the menu.

Those would've been better imo.

I don't see the UI changing at all. Maybe the background a little bit, but nothing besides that. From a UI standpoint I think it's nice how it's very simple and sticks to that.

Other than the background I'm actually happy with this. FFXIII's menus were elevated because of the smooth CG transitions for characters, so hopefully they work on the background for FFXV.

EDIT: Like, FFXV is not the game for flashy menus and has never been since that abomination from the 2011 trailer. I wouldn't want this to be any different.

No FF is, but they definitely need to do a little more than what's currently on display.

I'm okay with these menu, but yeah some animations when the characters are selected wouldn't hurt.
And yeah, seeing only ATK and DEF isn't inspiring, but they already did that with XIII so i expected that.

Also, this is totally unrelated, but watching the latest Easy Allies podcast made me write down something very intimate about this game that i kinda wanted to share with you XV-Gaf guys:

Hi Ben (hope you'll still get to read this)!
You asking the guys where they were when VsXIII got announced and their plans for release made me think about where I was, how much i changed and especially where i'll be when it comes out, since it's going to be a CULMINATION of many things in my live: i'll graduate from university in college in Fall, and to celebrate i'll be travelling all around Japan (for the 1st time!) for research, from September 7th guess what the 30th.
If time-zones allow it, i'll actually try to partecipate at both the Day 1 in Japan (with those famous queues) and then in my home country.
Then, after three exhausting weeks, i'll arrive at the airport and what will await me? My best friends, and the game i've been most awaiting for the past decade.
Just wanted to tell you how much of a "religious experience" this will be for me too!

Special times ahead man, special times.

The FFXIII's menus were badass and awesome. Awesome music played as you clicked on stuff. You'd get a cool brief animation of Lightning or whichever character too.

I think I time stamped a menu change.... https://youtu.be/6id6s2_YAZU?t=95

If there's one thing FFXIII was extremely good at, it was its presentation. The menus in that game are so smooth and satisfying to use, and they look great too. The graphics and soundtrack were top notch too.

I reckon FFXV's menus will probably be spruced up a bit before the game finally releases. Maybe some animations and whatnot. I imagine the overall idea of them will stay the same though.

I actually loved FFXIII's menus and CGI animations for each character too. I thought the UI was very well done (the in-battle HUD could be much better though).

Edit: The FFXV's menus are probably placeholders and still work in progress.

It's nice that Tabata has such a realistic idea of Final Fantasy's current place in the market. Resting on their laurels will not get a general audience of people excited about the series again.

I also like the subtle implication that some of the higher ups at Square that have been with the franchise for a long time are out of touch crazy people. *cough*Toriyama*cough*

I didn't expect to see a Mr Saturn plushy in their office either.

Remove your love for FF XV and look at it again. It's "baby's 1st menu" written all over it. None of these guys are even MOVING. No poses, no animations.... It's more static than artful, in my opinion.

But like other people said, this will prolly be improved upon so it's no big deal.
This is a very narrow-minded way of thinking about UI style. Not every menu needs movement to be stylish. Less can be more, and in this case it seems like they're trying to go for more empty space and less clutter. Art is just as much about what is present as what is absent.

Having said that, the UI definitely seems to be a WIP at the moment, so I'm looking forward to see what improvements they'll bring.

I hope so. Not sure what's so on poinT about it currently. Basic text with a font that isn't the default isn't "simple and clean/minimalistic". It's entirely boring and probably as thrown together as it looks.
It's basically a very basic version of the menu in Final Fantasy XIII and I think that with some more touches it will look really good.

At least it's miles better than the ones in the Duscae demo and I am still kind of baffled that people said that those "menus" looked great =/

FF XV's clean and proper style isn't stylish at all.

Would it hurt to show some animations of the characters while clicking through menus? Like when you click on Noctis... maybe you'll see him sleeping or looking at a picture of his dad or Luna or laughing with his friends? JUST ANYTHING?!

... pre beta gameplay.
Those things are "polish", the very last thing in.

In general the UI is really basic for this game. Even in battle, there's nothing fancy going on. Just some transparent boxes with text. They probably whipped it up in 5 minutes.

Ignis watching too much Jojo

Holy crap! I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS!!!!

I had a dream over 3 years in which Ignis could manipulate mech based enemies.

I even PM'ed the contents of all the dreams I've had for the game to Kagari and duckroll, so I'm not bullshitting. (around 3-4 years ago when Versus was rumored to turn in to XV.)

I have bolded the things which have come true.

The previous night it was just fields and shit, it looked current gen.

Last night it was fields again, some hills, woods, forests (with a Flan in the forest) and finally a long beach/shore. Very realistic lighting and looked next-gen.

In both it was very seamless, connected and seemed open world. There was a mountain bike like GTA.

Noctis also has his original outfit.

WHAT DOES THIS ALL MEAN!?

Saw the entire E3,trailer

-Ignis can manipulate mechs

-over 4 mins long

-"Releasing Winter"

Had a dream/vision come to me last night. "In game advertisements" maybe like Yakuza?

COLEMAN TENTS!

Now I'm just waiting for the original Noctis outfit as DLC, along with mountain bikes.

Oh and also Flans in woods....

If you look closely the ability that Ignis has in that video "mark" creating warp points for Noctis. Personally, I can't wait to see what other abilities will the bros learn as they level up.

Is there anything else you foresaw Oracle?

I remember also can recall seeing Noctis and friends looking up towards a large golden/sunlit castle or cathedral in one of these dreams.

There was a lot more but some of it is hazy now.

I'll post any future visions on GAF immediately.

That Prompto gif.

I wonder what other weapons the other members will have.

IT looks like that Piledriver showed up just for that attack but I wonder if the other members of the party have different weapons they can use all the time (not just in special attacks).

We've seen it go through like, a dozen iterations? Hard to say it was "whipped up."

I mean, they want to get to 10m sold. No market is trivial at this point.

Not to mention it's a very young market and this is one of the first major AAA games(and not one of those "made for China/Russia" F2P multiplayer games like Call of Duty Online or Halo Online) that is targeting them.

I tried staying away from these threads too but it's impossible

I just want the game too much, so I soak all information as it comes. Hope it doesnt burn me in the end

I skip story news (like the chapter one preview and such) but stuff like gameplay in Duscae and such i don't mind. Anything that revolves around gameplay mechanics and Tabata speaking his mind I'm cool with it.

Absolutely. Getting in on the ground floor while the console market is young and there isn't even really any other competition in the same genre/scale of production seeds potential for them to get a nice chunk of that 1.5m.

While I am still super psyched for everything 15 related, I am getting a little annoyed now how much this current team is basically ignoring /downgrading the fans of 11,12, the 13 series and 14 in 'defining' Final Fantasy. Divisiveness of the titles aside, those same fans made those games (or rather, the rebirth of 14) big successes for them, with even the 13 series being one of their biggest success ever. I absolutely love every FF game but my hallmark of a FF remains FF4. SE has done an excellent job of replicating and expanding that hallmark in many games since 4. They don't need to beat FF7. 15 just needs to be a quality title, end of story.

That's rather Tabata's personal opinion. FF7 is the holy grail and remains untouched, and this is coming from someone who's fave FF is 8.

I don't think his intention is to degrade any of those titles. I think he's commenting on how, from a development standpoint, those games still adhered to what he calls a "Standard Definition" way of making games.(ie. how a linear game like FFXIII can come out when the rest of the world was pioneering more and more openness) He also is saying that, as a result of this complacency, that FF as a brand has lost a lot of its luster to the wider gaming audience.

In the PS1-PS2 era, FF games were almost always a known good, and they came out frequently enough with major hits that they kept this reputation going. Now they take many years(or a decade T.T) and they have to really go all out to prove that they can still make masterpieces.
