Gameboy Player vs. GBASP

Which do you prefer?

I've had my Gameboy Player for a few months now and it's still in its case. -_-

Honestly I play most handheld games between small breaks while doing stuff like wasting time on the internets. I like playing for 10-15 minutes sessions. Every time I sit down to play a long game a console one always wins. Even with 3/4 hour sessions on handheld games (like Advance Wars) I'd prefer the SP - it's just feels different than couch/TV so it kind of has its own charm.

Also, most handheld games I have are not as good as console ones so they're better played as just handheld games in small bursts imo.

I recently got into the 2D Zeldas and currently I'm at the 3rd dungeon in Link's Awakening and while the game is awesome, it's not even close to the 3D Zeldas. Explorations just isn't the same (dragging myself from screen to screen is also annoying), and combat in the 3D zeldas is on a whole different level than 2D ones. And this is Zelda, combat isn't really it's best part. LA is still awesome though, once I got over the 2D/3D comparisons it got even better.

There's also the whole OCD obsession over which way I should play a game. I blame the Gameboy Player's existence for this. It's in my head repeating every time I play an SP game and probably the reason for this thread. :(

What are you, 12?

yeah I recently got all those gameboy zeldas I haven't played (both Oracles and Minish Cap) and I rather play those games on the big screen, so I picked up a GBP for a decent price.

Wow! I finally took out the GBP from that plastic case of death and tried it with Zelda: LA. Colors are insane! It's like going from the old GBA to SP. Music is clearer too. I also tried Castlevania: HoD and super mario bros. (classic nes collection) - I've been converted. O_O

Games don't look so good on SP anymore. For outside gaming I'll have to get a micro or sp+ now. :lol

i don't like the way gba games look on a big screen. but a hori pad handles much better than any actual portable, so i end up using my gb player a lot.

I bought a GameBoy Player when it first came out over here. You see, I had the Super GameBoy for the SNES, and I absolutely loved it.

However, I think the SP was already out by then, and I prefered playing on that...it looked excellent, so I hardly used my GBP since.

I did fire it up so I could connect my Metroid Fusion to Zero, though.

Then I got a DS, and now I have a micro. I love them both to bits, and don't think I'd ever fire up the GB Player ever again.

The GameBoy Player is a frame-skipping bastard.

GBA:SP+ for the win.

That said, I have a mint GameBoy Player for sale, indigo, $25 shipped USPS.

I used the GBA Player a lot when the first Fire Emblem came out on GBA.

I think I'll bring it back for some FFIV goodness. :D

The GBP plays old GB(C) games, right? I might get one to play those and the occasional GBA game when I'm at home and then the Micro for on the go.

Y'know guys, the Zelda series has been in 3D for 7 years now, with the previous 2D installment coming out 11 years ago. Chrono's position doesn't surprise me much.

Yup, plays all the same stuff as GBA/SP would.

could you clarify this?

You just broke my heart there. I take the detailed worlds of 2D Zeldas over OoT emptiness any day.

Don't just be ignoring GOTY material like minish cap like that.

Where did they release the Indigo ones? Thought they were all Jet Black in the US.

Ocarina of Time came out in 1998, so any console gamer who's started playing Zelda in the last 7 years would almost certainly start playing the series in 3D. And with the previous Zelda games being a 1991 SNES game and a 1994 Game Boy game, it wouldn't be difficult for someone to have missed out on them, especially if they were primarily into consoles.

For instance, I'm 23 and have been gaming all my life, but things went up another level into the obsession that continues to today when in 1995 I got big into SNES RPGs. I played a bit of Link to the Past and Link's Awakening (and have since completed them), but Ocarina of Time was the first total Zelda game experience for me.

I'm just long-windedly saying it's not exactly shocking to me to see a 2005 gamer more familiar with the 3D Zeldas than the 2D Zeldas, and using them as the standard for comparison.

Listen, I'm 19 (will be 20 tomorrow), and I've known about Zelda for nearly as far back as my memory can reach.

I cought Zelda NES on my own when I was 5 or so. So while I got it quite awhile after it released, I still got it, as did most everyone else I know. By indergarten year when I was 6 or so I had Zelda II. Hell, two of my earliest memories are Zelda releated. The first being me actually walking up the street to a neighbor's yardsale and buying the first game because of the gold cartridge, and the second memory being me getting yelled at for cursing at Zelda II after repeatedly dying trying to get the damn hammer in the cave system.

I'd imagine you're probably in the minority being 23 and not having a real zelda experience until OoT. LttP was huge, as was LA.

I still haven't got the Game Boy Player yet. I'm avoiding this cuz of redesign of NDS coming next year (since it don't plays GB Color games) :(

Questions:

I have a 27 inch regular flat tv. And I know it don't fill up entire screen but...

Will the missing surrounding portions burn in my tv (27 in) if nothing displaying on it even though the game is played in the middle of the screen?

Can the GBP fill up entire 13 inch tv or any tv?

Is the visual real clear like no choppiness, slow down that sorts of stuff?

What is the hori pad everyone talking about?

These are the games i haven't purchased yet.

EBay time:

Zelda: Link's Awakening
Zelda: Oracle of Ages
Zelda: Oracle of Seasons

Coming soon:

Final Fantasy IV
Final Fantasy V
Final Fantasy VI

We're already in a vast minority having ever touched a Zelda game in our lives, though.

If the current model DS doesn't play them, I doubt that's a feature that will be added. Hell, it's even removed from the latest model GBA.

Size doesn't matter, it's still going to display at GBA's aspect ratio and not completely fill the screen.

Ehh, it's not perfect. A still image is quite clear, yes. Due to, I believe, a frame rate difference between the GBA systems and the TVs we use, it sometimes will double a frame and give motion a slightly jerky look. Otherwise the GBP innards are just like any other GBA, so it will slow down at the same places it would on a portable unit.

GameCube pad released in Japan. Modeled after the SNES controller, but with the four face buttons in the GameCube style.

I haven't experienced any 'burn in' though my TV is somewhat newer (~5 years old), and it's calibrated for a dark viewing environment, so it's not running that bright.

Geez, I didn't play a lot of videogames as a kid so Zelda on N64 was the first one. How is that hard to believe?

I never even had a NES and just played a little (mario) in a relative's house. I got a SNES and played super mario world to death and some other turn-based soccer game, and that's it I think. I must've had more games, I remember bomberman and a robocop one, but that's it. That same relative though was a huge gamer and I think I played many more games when I was at his house, like street fighter, and he did make me try Link to the Past. I just thought it was weird you went around 'talking' to people in a game and played just 10 minutes. I think he made me play it every time I went to his house and each time I only play the same first 10 minutes, hah.

I only remembered LttP when I popped it in a GBASP and went through those same first 10 minutes. Except at that time I played the 3D Zelda and was disappointed so I forgot about it for a while. I still have it, and recently got the rest of the 2D zelda and have been working my way through LA. They're good but just not as good as the 3D ones. It's just not the same as exploring hyrule field with epona. No way. From what I played of LA a faithful translation to 3D would destroy the 2D one. Yet 2D LA is still good imo. I'm not sure how to explain this.

Here's an example: One Piece. I'm addicted to the manga and follow it every week. It rocks. Yet if I had a choice between NO FILLER anime that's faithful to the manga, and has the SAME PACE, I'd go with the anime. I can read a manga volume then see the corresponding anime episodes and still enjoy them, but I skipped whatever manga chapters I've already seen their anime counterpart when I started the manga. I'd say the gap between manga-anime OP and 2D-3D Zelda to me is a bit bigger since immersion is a bigger deal to me in videogames (and 3D is more realistic than 2D) but that is close enough.

About that Hori pad...

It WAS formally released in the US as well. The Nintendo World store carries them, and I believe they're officially licensed (since the NWS doesn't bother carrying 3rd party apps).

Although the player is a nice piece of hardware, i don't own one.
I use my DS or SP when i'm travelling, and my consoles when i'm at home.

Its kind of why I feel its a suitable replacement for the SNES. (So long as you, you know, bargain hunt games...)

Its like having one that plays NES, Genesis and so forth games all in a purple box.
