Gamecube doesn't read discs

So I guess it started with Resident Evil 4 one month and a half ago. I turned my Gamecube on and it was like "Game disc error." or something. So I was like "Lame" and turned it off, left it for five minutes then turned back on again. Everything worked fine; problem solved I thought.

But then it began to happen periodically, pretty much always when starting up games. It didn't really bother me, since the fix was always just turning on then turning it back on.

Until now, of course. Now when I turn it on, it makes a funny (obviously not HA-HA-HA funny) noise and goes straight to the menu. Then when I select "Gameplay" it claims there isn't a disc inserted, when there goddamn is.

Anyhoo, has anyone else here experienced this and if so, is there anyway to fix it or am I fucked and have to shell out for a whole new Gamecube?

Happened to me, and then I bought a new GC. But back then I didn't know Nintendo had grade AAA customer service. Call them up, they'll take care of you.

Call Nintendo customer service and bitch. Tell them you've supported them for years and that you can still use your NES blah blah blah.
Just try to guilt them into either fixing it or giving you a new one.

Yeah, the only catch is I'm not sure how great Nintendo's customer service is in New Zealand. Worth a try though I guess.

Is the laser's potentiometer... there's a FAQ on GameFaqs. There used to be pics too...
I fixed mine because there isn't any Nintendo Costumer Service where I live... but you should definitely call them...

nintendo? New Zealand? BWA HAHAHA! They don't belong in the same sentence together.... their presence here is laughable at best.

ANywya, the distributors (Monaco Corporation) are actually fairly reasonable. I dids something as simple as complain about linking of launch ADvance Wars vs. shelf copies, and they gave me new shelf copies, despite my AW being years old. Just be polite - espeically if it's within a year old - the warranty should still be good. If it's more than that, I'm not sure if they can be held accountable - but you can still try. I find I get much farther when I'm polite, though.
