Gamesindustry: Xbox Live Compute (Cloud Servers) offered free to devs

http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2013-10-15-the-difference-engine

It means persistent worlds, improved AI, better rendering and dedicated servers for every multiplayer game on the platform. And it's all being offered to developers for free.

Thought that this was a pretty informative article and didn't want it to get buried in the other thread.

If true, then developers having free access to servers is a big deal I think, and can be used as a selling point when MS is trying court developers and publishers.

**Warning: this article contains positive outlooks and opinions on MS and the Cloud

Statement from Albert in other thread:

Also to be clear. One of the benefits of publishing games on Xbox One – ALL game developers get Dedicated Servers, Cloud Processing, and “storage” (for save games) free.

If you want to do dedicated servers on other platforms, you have to prop them yourself. But on Xbox One, while developers can choose to use their own methods, we make it available to everyone.

There should be no confusion on this point. We do not charge developers for Dedicated Servers.

Free dedicated servers for all multiplayer games is a huge deal. I hope Sony announces something similar, for the betterment of all gamer-kind.

LoL

Great news! This is actually a good reason to buy an XBOne.

It was a huge investment for Microsoft. Why would they refuse to recoup any revenue? If the prices were too high for devs, they could have lowered them. This seems like a gesture

great news. host advantage in halo and cod sucks.

Lol

Ms pr at it best here. They lead you to beliebe what you posted. Byt this is just "compute" servers. Not free dedicated servers for multiplayer.

Doesnt this fly against what we were told before. I guess they are trying to sweeten the pot for devs making it free, good for devs.

I've both heard that it's free or that it's cheaper than usual dedicated servers, IDK what it really is.

It doesn't say free dedi's, it says free compute, no word on if they're still charging for storage/badwidth, doesn't make much sense to use the word "compute" otherwise.

Lol

Read the article. They just rebranded the Xbox Live Cloud to Xbox Live Compute. This is free access to all the cloud services for Xbox One for devs. They can do whatever they want with it.

What's the difference between compute servers and dedicated servers?

Edit: nvm, Salvor.Hardin with the rebuttal. I knew I saw "dedicated servers" somewhere in that article.

I thought this lined up exactly with what we've been hearing.

Nope, Titanfall devs said they were getting this stuff at a discount, not free.

This has the potential to be pretty huge, even if only for online gaming infrastructure.

Well, compute and dedicated are the same thing

The difference to normal terminology is there's a machine per player or rather resources dedicated for each client instead of just the match itself.

Damn this is huge. I'm going to start saving for a 2nd next-gen console I guess. o_O Come on MS now drop the price to 400(with or without the kinect). Or have a $500 bundle that includes titanfall.

Good news if it actually means dedis for every MP game

It looks like the author assumes dedicated servers for multiplayer

I don't see where MS said that

It is a very huge deal. I've seen a lot of comments to the contrary here on GAF though, that devs are forced to pay a fee to MS for the servers.

You're the reason why Warning labels were invented.

Yeah for match making or stat tracking. Never said it can be used for hosting matches for games.

Which goes with what we been told the whole time.

Nothing new here...

It's looking pretty obvious that Microsoft is trying make the x1 a huge multiplayer console. Personally, I am fine with that as long as they also single player experiences along the same lines, as what I hope, The Order is going to offer.

Also, I would just fine with having to rely on third parties for that.

The quote from the article was.

Microsoft never said free dedicated servers for multiplayer gaming that was the interpretation by the author of the article. Microsoft is talking about we compute resources available to large and small companies to encourage the use of the Azure platform. The article even states that Activision and EA will probably not use it which we know is untrue for Call of Duty dedis. The author just got confused about the terms.

Anyway to the good points this sounds like a positive especially for smaller companies and indies. It will allow for some really cool stuff I think.

The quote from the article was.

That was the author of the article not microsoft notice the lack of quotes.

Good news for PS4 as well? If Xbone is offering free dedicated servers, and devs program to use dedicated servers on the Xbone, wouldn't the easiest thing for PS4 development be to program for dedicated servers, versus reprogramming for peer-to-peer?

I'm not a developer or have any idea of the costs involved, obviously.

The quote from the article was.

And also, they are using the compute servers as the dedicated host, people have to understand there isn't two separate parts, its all one thing.

Good news for development but bad news for long term unless Sony matches. If dev doesn't want to pay for the service any more, then the dedicated servers go out. If MS has it free for platform, the dedicated servers will exist as long as XBL exists

It's free like the samples you can have from stalls in a fair.

Everybody will use it in some way or another, then we will see. Servers cost, and somebody has to pay for them, guess who? the custumer!

it's cool to have persistent worlds, what's not cool is to pay something I should have already paid with the 60$ per year live fee.

Don't be overexcited for anything but dedicated servers and persistent worlds.

I see free dedicated servers mentioned in the one paragraph without quotes from an actual MS person. So was that just exposition on possibilities by the article writer?

That seems like the case to me but you have remember, devs won't be getting free servers from Microsoft for the ps4 versions.

A good move for Microsoft to entice developers at a time when developing costs are expected to grow even more, but people expecting "better rendering" are in for a disappointment. I'll believe it when I see it...
