Gamespot Ps2 Psychonauts review

Especially for a game that has gone through four-plus years of development and two publishers, Psychonauts turned out remarkably well. It's pretty evident where all that development time was spent, as each and every moment just seems so carefully crafted and polished, to the point where you can't help but feel a deep appreciation for the whole experience. Players looking for a stiff challenge or an exceptionally lengthy adventure won't find it here, and, admittedly, the rough edges of the graphics don't make the PS2 version of the game the most ideal one overall. However, anyone just looking for a fun and whimsical adventure with a brilliant presentation and a fantastic story will find just that in Psychonauts.

I'm so tempted to buy this one even though I already own the XBX version, just to say "Thanks, Majesco+Doublefine!"

I know what you mean

I keep meaning to buy the soundtrack from their store..

I think the graphics is what makes the game look unique. I think the developers were being lazy in the graphics department when porting it to PS2.

I'm thinking of buying the signed ps2 version and asking if peter chan, scott campbell, razmig mavlian and nathan stapley will sign it..

I thought the graphics took a noticeable hit, but that's just me.

Yeah, buy Psychonauts. Everyone. What a brilliant game. Maybe it will change someone's mind about Western art and original gameplay design.

Just paid an extra $10 for a copy signed by Tim Schafer.

This game better be as good as the reviews say it is.

Finished the PC demo the other day on the lunch break at work. It was so damn good. The "Punch Raz! Punch!" scene had me really laughing. I simply have to play this some time in the future but lately I've just been too busy to sit down and play something that requires (and deserves) commitment.

Absolutely, it's clearly not the most impressive Xbox title out there.. and after Jak3 or God of War, I think it could have been a perfect port (maybe with some more blurry textures).

So, someone summarize it for lazy me? How does this version compare to the other two? The PS2 version is the only one I'd consider. No Xbox, and wouldn't dream of playing a platformer on my comp, regardless how powerful it is.

I don't know. I like different and wierd games, but this game just looks too wierd.

It's not weird at all, actually. Its art is out there (and excellent), but gameplay is very straightforward.

You know how Ratchet & Clank is a perfect mix of the platforming and action genres? This is a perfect mix (or evolution) of the old point-and-click adventures and platforming. It's fresh, it's fun, and it's so incredibly well done.

I know the PC version is $30, but I couldn't fathom playing a platformer in the PC.

I use a SmartJoy PS2 usb adapter and it works pretty much flawlessly. Im sure the basic logitech or nyko pads should work just as well. Ive never played a platformer that felt quite as natural on a PC as Psychonauts does. And at 1280x1024 res it spanks the Xbox in the visual department. Get it.

Psychonauts! Buy it! Even if you only own a GameCube!

I just started playing the Xbox version tonight. This game is fuckin' awesome.

woah. not often ports gets 0.1 less than the original version. i hope they keep the same steam and scores RE4 (PS2) a 9.5.

I don't get the love for it. Felt like a generic platformer. I felt no connection to the main character. Eh...

uh-oh - the ps2 version looks so ugly! dammit, wich developer took all the textures out? does it run on a psone too?

Some of the art is just wierd and not that inspiring but when you get to some levels, like the velvet level, you want to just dive in and live there forever...so beautiful and, for a change, original.

And the game itself isn't really that wierd, its pretty conventional in actual gameplay terms, but it mixes platforming with adventure in a cool way.

Is a rental good enough?

I'm broke...
If all you can do is a rental, go for it. You can probably beat it before it's time for the return. It's a very charming game; don't miss the chance to play it. :)
