Here's an excert from the journal entry from one the editors thats in Japan for the PSP launch...

"Sony has rated the battery life to be around the six hour mark when playing games. So far, that seems to be accurate. Games--at least the ones we've seen so far--seem to be pretty good about only spinning the disc when needed. Movies, however, are streaming off the disc at a pretty constant rate, so it seems like you'll get less movie time than game time, but exactly how much less is a little tougher to figure. I would also imagine that the lower power requirements of reading the memory stick means that movies playing off of a stick wouldn't take as much as reading a movie from a UMD. We'll be putting that to the test soon."

Sounds very good. I wonder when we will get definitive numbers, no "sounds about accurate" or "at least with the games we played" crap! Tell us what games! What settings! What everything! Like that guy who posted the ~4h battery playing UMDs stuff. Jeez can't be so hard to give definitive answer to that question now can it!!

if umd movies push the battery hardest, and a psp can play a umd movie at maximum brightness for four hours and twenty minutes on one charge, then it seems like sony's stated 4-6 hours figure is accurate, or perhaps conservative. not that this surprises me; sony obviously stands to gain nothing from lies about the battery life, which would quickly be exposed. but this should -- should -- put some of the more outrageous speculation to rest.

Woah lots of PSP hate over at Anandtech. Also comments on battery life but only has the official figure (4-6h).

Sony PSP is set to launch in a couple of days in Japan. The launch is already marred by the relatively lack of available units (200k), poor selection of games (only 5), questionable battery life, and none of the much talk about multimedia functions.

... and none of the much talk about multimedia functions.
What the fuck are they talking about? The person who came up with the 4 hr 20 min figure has done nothing but play MP3s and MPEG 4 videos. Ignorance is bliss. :lol
