Gamespot's Psychonaut Review

8.8

Psychonauts is a quirky, offbeat game set in a special summer camp for clairvoyant kids, in which a group of psychic children end up in a wacky adventure filled with brain-stealing hijinks, psychic secret agents, and a little romance on top of everything else. It's rooted in the sorts of 3D platforming sensibilities we've all come to know over the years. But there's a spin to the game--its psychic theme--which adds some cool puzzle-solving to the usual platform-jumping and swinging associated with the genre. Psychonauts also bears the unmistakable mark of designer Tim Schafer (known for classic adventure games Grim Fandango, Full Throttle, and Day of the Tentacle), thanks to a hilarious array of peculiar characters and a story that never fails to entertain. Psychonauts doesn't reinvent the platformer, but it still delivers an experience that feels wholly original in every aspect of its execution.

no one in town has it yet :( Hopefully tommorow.

I preordered it from Software Etc and when I went to go pick it up today at lunch they told me they only recieved 3 copies which were already gone and that I'd have to wait until their next shipment comes in later this week. WTF?!? Isn't the whole point in pre-ordering something is so I can actually pick it up on the release day? Doesn't make any fucking sense to me. As soon as I get my copy I'll never go back to that store. Fuck them in their non counting asses.

Sorry about the rant. I honestly hate reading about shopping woes or stupid clerks but this really fucking pissed me off today.

I'm getting it tomorrow. I might not eat for a couple of weeks, but I must have it.

I would take a bullet for Tim. Skipping meals for him isnt enough. Do more for Tim speevy. Dont you love Tim?

That happens occasionally. In rare circumstances there just literally is NOT enough stock in the first run to fill preorders. I had to wait a week to get my Lunar 2 for PS. And anybody remember the PS2 launch? That does really suck though. Usually if I REALLY have to have something day one, I get it online (usually w/EB) and just pay for Overnight. It costs a little extra, but it gets to my house before the stores usually even get it, and I've never gotten shafted that way. When I used to work at EB I was told the website preorders take priority over stores, I don't know if that's true or still the case though.

buh? i thought this was coming out in may. nice score, though...i'd better corral up some crap old games and preorder it at gamerush (they tend to get games a few days late).

Played the demo last night(along with Doom 3). Both are fucking phenominal,IMHO.

Gotta get some dough, and if Forza turns out good, lock myself up for the rest of spring

*sigh* ther goes my golf score :lol

Just called the ebgames where I have mine pre-ordered, but no luck. They said it's coming in tomorrow. The anticipation is unbearable. Great score though.

Rise up generic platformers!

Not sure what is generic about this game.. ?

Plus, Im going to guess sales in the 10's of thousands. around 30K or so. Hopefully more, but Im not counting on it.

Mar 18 20:38:49 <pj> gameplay: 8, graphics: 9, sound: 10, value: 9, tilt: 10

MY PREDICTION WAS SO CLOSE. I guess I overestimated how much they'd like finding all the secrets the game is laden with..

Other than minor graphical differences, is there anything major seperating the PC/PS2/Xbx versions?
I haven't seen much of any solid info regarding the PS2 version -- I'd be pretty dubious at this point.

PC version is 20 bucks cheaper. PS2 version is two months away and we have no screens, so it could be an asstastic port that they hope sells based on a strong Xbox and PC reviews. I dont think Tim would let that happen though.

i want a sequel to Full Throttle damnit.... ;_;

yeah, but the one they were making didnt have the help of Tim of the voice actor who made that game.

I want to play this, but I don't want to send the message that it's acceptable to bring out niche games like this for $50.

Hopefully Fry's will have a deal on it.

It's a platformer with a story.. how is that a niche title?

From the store page...

If you steal a credit card with a high enough limit, you could buy enough copies to play it simultaneously on every appliance in your house, except for your toaster. Or Gamecube.

??? don't buy it tool. I wish people would send NFSU2 the same message. Not the niche thing, but the repugnant thing.

Niche as in a low profile release. At a time when many high-profile games don't do all that great at $50, the idea that a publisher would put out a game with less marketing and a very small immediate audience at the same price and honestly expect a different fate is ludicrous. Would have done all right if they had put it out at a price that encouraged casual sales, $30 or less. But at $50, they completely set themselves up for a flop, and I'll scoop it up once it mysteriously underperforms and they drop the price.

Because the only games worth paying full price for are the ones with guns, tricked-out cars, and footballs.

I figured there'd be more impressions by now. Someone? Anyone? Aw hell, lemme just get off my fat ass and buy it myself. *reaches for car keys*
