GameSpy's network dev. arms-length from journalism division?

Is GameSpy's network platform at arms-length, or even completely spun off from the journalism division? I just can't see how they can be a core partner of Nintendo and maintain any illusion of integrity in their content on IGN and GameSpy, regardless of whether the editors mean well.

Other than the fact that the head of that division is a friend of mine, I or my editors have absolutely no dealing with them. Heck, half the time we don't even know the deals they are working on until after the fact. What we do it totally separate from what they do and neither operation is contingent on the other.

Take that for what its worth to you.

Whether the two are autonomous or not, you can bet that every time a Gamespy network reviews a Nintendo game highly it will be seen as a pay-off.

Except Nintendo isn't the only company that uses Gamespy's tech. Tons of other online games use the same software, and nobody cries "teh MoniehatZ!!" whenever one is reviewed. Granted this is Nintendo here, so that automatically makes it a target, but still.

that being said, a different name for that division would be wise

What other console games use Gamespy tech?

I don't know about other consoles, but several game companies use Gamespy tech for their online support. Relic uses Gamespy for Dawn of War, as an example.

Craig at IGN posted a mailbag response to such inquiries... they've reviewed games they didn't even know used Gamespy tech, he had no great knowledge as to how their solution actually works - so all he can really do is review the game. Not to mention they're not based where IGN are IIRC.

Midway uses GameSpy too iirc... Sony and Nintendo both licensed it for their SDKs.
