GameStop: "the flood gates are open for PS4 system reserves"

Only thing Sony got wrong was the box design.
Should have called me Sony!

I like the ps4 box (and I have a weird box fetish...) but yours is superior. Please mass produce.

Everything is coming into focus now: Sony is aiming for October with a steady flow of shipments leading into Xbone's launch. "Why buy an Xbone when you can have a PS4 now? Available everywhere! Easy to find!"

it's obvious sony has been laying traps out. they already locked in the manufacturing and already produced and island full of ps4 already under some random indian name so no one knows where to find it.

????

AMD has been making APU for few years now.

Also the design challenge is Xbone only, since no one put 32MB ESRAM on CPU die before.

They have never done an APU with this many CPU cores or GPU compute units. The memory controllers are also pretty different. It is by far the biggest, most complicated APU ever made at scale.

Isn't the Xbone using a custom AMD chip?

Both Sony and Microsoft worked with AMD to make custom chips.

I think Sony will be able to deliver a ton of units. Not sure about 16m but I don't think they are messing around this time.

If they really do move millions, it's going to be demoralizing to the potential buyers of the XBox as well. A healthy player base for games like BF4 where you see thousands of 64person servers up at all times of the day is going to pull people off the fence, and right out of the fucking yard.

People are dumb don't you know. They need actual pictures to show them what they are buying.

I'm very confused by Apple packaging when I was buying an iphone. I wish it had a picture on it as well. I just thought I was buying a very small ipad.

PS4 box would look much nicer without the controller... it is kind of fugly, and takes away from the sleek, sexy look of the console.

Wow pretty cool. So cheapassgamer says Sony is ahead by 50% in preorders? I can't believe MS removing DRM only gave them a 10% bump(so far).

If sony is smart they play the launch date just like they played DRM. Wait for microsoft to make the first move and then capitalize on it. If Microsoft launches in late November they don't need to rush for october (rushing more in terms of software)... they can still get a week or two on them.
It'd be great to give 1st parties as much time as possible, but I'm getting the impression that their 3rd party publishing partners are probably jonesing to get the party started with the next gen already. So the latter could potentially carry them in the first few weeks with traditional tentpole holiday releases and maybe give 1st parties aiming for launch a little more time to polish up and release a week or two after launch.

It doesn't mean unlimited. Just that there are enough expected units that Sony don't want to keep saying 'and another 1000 units' every couple of days. Just say 'off you go' and then monitor volumes vs production and let them know if/when they start getting close to expected limits

Also, I think it is a pretty scummy move by Amazon to put the Launch day PS4 behind a bunch of bundles that raise the price by $60-100 while the $399 is out of stock and they only have the standard one available.

Sony should stamp that shit out.

Hell no. It actually benefits both us and Amazon. Amazon does make more money, however, scalpers don't buy bundles.

These are not the outrageous bundles of gaming generations past. Remember forced bundling of disc cleaner kits and that kind of shit? Everybody buying a PS4 is going to buy PS+ and a game, so it's not like anything is going to waste. Hell, you even save $10, which again is a better deal than past bundles.

Funcoland was the worst offender about this, IIRC. Best Buy did it too.

I'd change my preorder to a bundle for the 10$ discount if I thought I could do so and not lose my launch edition. Those bundles are actually a good deal

Not only that but if the XB1 sells out from being supply constrained then people are going to look at the PS4 and say "we'll it is a 100 bux cheaper, and I have heard great things about it, and it does have all the same great multiplat titles....ahhh fuck it ill gt a PS4".

well, I hope Sony has plans to fill all of those orders from GS as well as teh ones from Amazon... If so, that would be awesome stuff....

And don't worry about the Infrastructure to support online - it was bought a while ago. Now, whether Sony implements it correctly remains to be seen, but I have faith.

If they issue a directive like this it can only mean they genuinely feel stock is not an issue for launch. Sony scares me these days. What happened to the bumbling Sony we all knew? This can only be Commander Kaz in action.

I'm very interested to see what the demand is like this holiday and how the scalpers do. The eBay scheming was insane during the PS3 launch, but the bottom fell out so fast. I feel like most of the people I spoke to were planning to offload their console.

Kaz, Jack, Shuhei and Adam join together to form Sonytron!

$499 is the new $599. I'm only partly joking.

Microsoft is going to learn the same tough lesson Sony did; brand loyalty means nothing to the majority if the competitive option is at a cheaper price.

In all honesty, I have yet to talk to a single person who is in on Xbone, even post-DRM removal. "I can get an extra controller and a game for $500 with PS4, I would be a moron to buy Xbone" is something I've heard several times over. And some of these people own 100+ 360 games, myself included.

Wow, I really doubt Sony can get that many systems to fab, in such short time frame, but honestly those preorder numbers are gonna be sony's own best PR.

Speaking of fabrication nightmares though, I bet the Kinect is gonna be the straw that broke the camels back when it comes to getting boxes on shelves. Not that it will sell that well, but just rubbing MS's face in how bad an idea it was to bundle that thing with the console...

Wow, Sony must be confident as hell about their ability to keep supply up. I wonder what changed to prompt such a decision.

Kinect causing production issues? I'm actually starting to believe what cboat said about low yields for the Xbox One.

Do you think it is an accident that the PS4 looks a lot like the PS2? PS2 was one of the most successful consoles of all time - and Sony is doing a LOT to link the PS4 and PS2 together image wise.

Smart, really

Sony is targetting Xbox owners that are ticked-off by Don Mattricks policies.

Gamestop is the most important retail channel to allocate extra units.

The vast majority of people buying either system has no idea who Don is.

Now that the policies have changed well before the system launches, it's going to be a much closer race than before.

Be either they secured more GDDR5 or got extra capacity from the fab for the SOC. Those be the only 2 parts that could limit them. If the hit targets on both they should be able to ramp up production and have a few million for the holiday season.

A lot of people are saying this, but if they're aiming for so many units at launch wouldn't it benefit them to go mid-November? I honestly have no idea how many more they could turn out in a couple of extra weeks, but I would think it would make some difference.

It will be interesting to see what they do.

I preordered my PS4 from amazon and best buy (make sure day one, will likely cancel 1)

nice thing with best buy is they only wanted $25 vs gamestop $100

Went into Gamestop today to preorder a couple games for launch. The guy I know working there said preorders were still massively in favor of PS4. He said atleast 10 people came in to reserve one just last night alone.

I believe it. Every single gamer friend of mine has one pre-ordered and these were all pretty much Xbox people.

main reason.. $$$
